Dear Runkle Community, Dear Runkle Community,

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

Our first week of 2026 has been both productive and fun. It was wonderful to see so many families at this morning’s PTO meeting. Thank you for the applause for Mr. Pelton and me after our Winter Assembly pie-in-the-face moment! Congratulations on reaching your fundraising goal; having no spring fundraising is a gift to our entire community.

January is full of exciting events. Next week, our English Learner students will begin ACCESS testing, the state-mandated assessment for all EL students. We are also looking ahead to MLK Day (observed Monday, January 19), Half-Way Day on January 27, and the start of Techsploration, which will continue into the spring for all grade levels.

Skating Under the Stars is tonight at Larz Anderson from 5:00–6:00 PM, with free Open Skate afterward. The PTO has also planned fantastic upcoming events for K–5 and Middle School students, including a Glow Dance, Middle School Dance, Math & Science Night, and BINGO.

Finally, Mr. Pelton and I will begin regular learning walks in K–5 Fishtank classrooms across Brookline schools. These visits will help strengthen our shared understanding of the curriculum, support teachers, and further our district-wide culture of collaboration and continuous learning.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Donna

Runkle's PAAR program brought Archaeologist 4 Schools to our 4th grade classrooms on Thursday.

Archaeology 4 Schools (A4S) is a program that specializes in using curriculum frameworks to teach students the essentials of archaeology and the work that archaeologists do. The program covers topics such as ancient migrations, early North American populations, major civilizations, research conduct, and examples of Native American archaeological sites in North America. It looks like our students loved this presentation!

Thanks to our PTO, SEPAC, and amazing teachers, the Runkle and Hayes RISE programs went ice skating! It was a long-standing Runkle tradition put on hold by COVID. We were thrilled to include the Hayes students and staff this year.

This was a very special morinng; our kids were very happy to be outdoors with friends and staff (and indoors with hot chocolate). It was also amazing to see the two RISE programs unified and seeing the scope of who all of our students are. Many of our students knew each other and the RISE staff from ESY, so there were many cute reunions.

Our 5-8th grade students attended an Acapella performance with Mixed Company from Yale University today. Mixed Company also presented short workshops for our 5th and 6-8th grade Chorus classes. This was made possible by our music teacher, Sarah Gardner, Runkle, and our PTO. Thank you to all involved in bringing these talented performers to Runkle.
