DHS, DAE names April Students of the Month

Congratulations to the following students selected as Students of the Month at Davison High School and Davison Alternative Education for the month of April.

9th grade - Cameron Edwards

Nominated by: Mrs. Blake and Mr. Crongeyer

Mrs. Blake wrote that Cameron's enthusiasm to learn math is on full display every single day! He's excited to hear about what the class is going to learn and jumps right into whole group discussion when being taught a new lesson. He loves to show everyone his knowledge by raising his hand to offer his thoughts/answer and has learned that "wait time" allows others to take a little longer to process information than he needs. When he sees a peer needing assistance, he offers his help right away with a nonjudgmental attitude. Cameron gives great thought to test questions, wanting to give his best effort and score 100's. He's ready to tackle TT Algebra next year and Mrs. Blake looks forward to having him as her student again.

Mr. Crongeyer wrote that Cameron is awesome to have in class. He does a fantastic job in both of the classes he has him. He is hardworking, attentive and always participates in class. For being a freshman, Cameron has adapted to his new setting perfectly and received all As during the first semester. He is the first student to raise his hand to share and answer (he's usually right) and works hard in study skills to make sure he leaves each day with his work completed.

10th grade - Parker Forbus

Nominated by: Mr. Belprez and Ms. Sanderson

Mr. Belprez wrote that Parker is an outstanding young man who serves as a great example of what it means to be a Davison Cardinal. He is courteous and supportive both in and out of class. He takes responsibility for his actions and always seeks to do his best. Outside of school he displays genuine care for others as evident in the work he does with his church. Parker has tons of leadership potential and excels in the JROTC program.

Ms. Sanderson wrote that Parker exemplifies what it means to demonstrate the Cardinal Code! He consistently demonstrates the qualities we value most in our school community, but is especially courteous, attentive and supportive in the art room. Parker approaches each day with a respectful and considerate attitude. Whether he's interacting with his teacher or his classmates, he treats everyone with kindness and genuine regard. Additionally, Parker brings original ideas and a fresh perspective that inspire others to think outside the box in class. He encourages his peers when they don’t understand a concept, and he consistently works to let his personality shine through. His curious nature, love of learning about art, and determination are refreshing attributes we hope to see in all students.

11th grade - Mercedez Newberry

Nominated by: Mr. Dewitt

Mercedez is an extremely hard worker and always looking for something to do! She has led multiple teams on multiple projects for other teachers. She has helped multiple teachers around the school with her projects. For Mrs. Mobley she’s made planting tables and garden boxes. For Mr. Kelsey she had made a garden table/sink. She has also made bat houses for another teacher! Mercedez is a shining star in our class. She is very motivated when it comes to hands-on projects and is always first to volunteer for the next one. She would be an excellent representative for the student of the month!

12th grade - Allan Cummins

Nominated by: Mr. Sturgess

Allan has persevered through adversities and maintains a great attitude and personality. He is super respectful and works hard in school and out.

DAE - Addyson Pilon

Nominated by: Mr. Coffey

Addy has been a pleasure to have in class this year. She always comes in with a good attitude, pays attention, and takes care of business. You never have to worry about her not doing her work; she is always on task and has a bright future ahead of her.

ESports team secures second consecutive state champ win

Earlier this week, the Davison High School ESports JV Smash Crew Battle team Davison Stage-Spike secured its second consecutive season as Michigan High School Esports Federation (MiHSEF) state champs!

Congrats to the team of Connor Rose, Andrew Miller, Tyler Glasco, Hunter Paris, Jordan Talaski and Amelia Bayne for taking their team all the way!

Varsity Smash Crew Battle team Davison Jab-Lock goes to the MiHSEF finals this Saturday at University of Michigan-Flint to take on the top 24 Smash Crew Battle high school teams in the state, said Coach Jake Balla.

The Davison ESports program has grown so popular that Coach Balla decided to try something new this season.

"We entered a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team composed of would-be-benched varsity players in the Eastern regional conference," he said. "Our kids who would have been benchwarmers on varsity instead had the opportunity to play as a second varsity team against schools from other states. After a solid regular season Davison Forward-Smash made it to round two of the Eastern conference playoffs but were eliminated by the Indiana team Logansport Highschool Berries."

Congrats to Brady Sayles, Andrew Ohlson, Andrew Miller, Soren Stewart, Rex Poff and Quinn McCrocklin for a great season and ranking 27th overall in the eastern regional conference.

Next week the Varsity Smash singles team Davison Up-Smash and JV Smash singles team Davison Down-Smash start playoffs for the Michigan High School Esports League (MHSEL).

Davison's Rocket League team Davison Maroon Vroom also made playoffs this season. Their first round is against the North Branch Ballistic Broncos next Tuesday.

As a last note, our Marvel Rivals club is on break until testing wraps up and will hopefully resume in two weeks.

DMS science students dissect squid

Davison Middle School seventh graders participated in a squid dissection day on March 29. The experiment, held during science classes, was part of the Salmon in the Classroom program and the district's Ecosystems curriculum, said teacher Mrs. Kerri Major.

"Students acted as real scientists in this hands-on activity," she said. "Fun and engagement were obvious all around!"

Both Davison High School and Davison Middle School participate in the Department of Natural Resources' Salmon in the Classroom program. High school students released salmon last week at Stepping Stone Falls and Davison Middle School students released the salmon they raised in the Black Creek. You can read more about the releases in next week's edition of the Chirp Sheet.

District honors 10 students at spring ABC award luncheon

Ten students were recognized for their outstanding character at the Spring 2025 A+B=C award ceremony held Tuesday, April 22, at the Cardinal Station.

"It is important to recognize people who do the right thing," Superintendent Matt Lobban said. "We really don’t do this enough. Negativity fills social media and television, music, common conversations, the focus of society in general. But, we can fight back, not by engaging with the same rhetoric, methods, and madness, but by choosing a different route."

The following students were honored at the ceremony, which included a delicious lunch and desserts prepared by staff from the DCS Food Services Department.

  • Cora Maynard, fifth grader at Hahn Intermediate, was nominated by teacher Mrs. Jenna Blake. Cora’s character is truly exceptional, marked by kindness, integrity and a genuine concern for others. She consistently puts the needs of those around her before her own, offering help and support whenever it's needed. Her heart of gold shines through in everything she does—whether it's lending a listening ear, offering words of encouragement, or simply being there for someone in need. Her generosity and selflessness create a positive, uplifting atmosphere wherever she goes, making her not just a wonderful friend, but an inspiring example of what it means to have a good heart.

  • Gatlin Diehl, fifth grader at Hahn Intermediate, was nominated by teacher Mrs. Deidre Callan. Gatlin demonstrates a commitment to kindness that has positively influenced his classmates and teachers alike. He treats everyone with respect and empathy, creating an atmosphere of support and collaboration that is essential for effective learning. His ability to lead by example and show self-control sets a standard for his peers, making a lasting impact on our classroom dynamics. Gatlin is consistently on task, displaying a strong work ethic that is commendable. He adheres to the Cardinal Code, demonstrating integrity and responsibility in all his actions. This dedication not only reflects his values but also serves as a model for his peers. He approaches challenges with a positive attitude and resilience, which has contributed to his success in both academic and extracurricular pursuits. It is a joy to watch him grow and inspire those around him.

  • Addison Pellow is a sixth grader at Hahn Intermediate. She was nominated by her teacher, Mrs. Melissa Bellinger. Addison handles all situations with respect and kindness. She consistently has a positive attitude to learning and personal success. When Addison was having an issue with a student in her group, she approached the student with respect and honesty in the most respectful way. Addison asked the other day how she could help contribute to others in need. She discussed her desire by naming programs she would like to help and how she is constantly thinking of those less fortunate.

  • Alexa Bennett is an eighth grader at Davison Middle School. She was nominated by Davison Middle School Assistant Principal Mrs. Cayla Dowdall. What sets Alexa apart is her genuine care for others. She doesn’t seek attention or recognition for efforts like these; she simply acts from a place of kindness and empathy. It is this quiet yet powerful dedication to making others feel seen and valued that makes her truly deserving of an award recognizing her character. At such a young age, Alexa exemplifies the qualities we should all strive for—compassion, empathy and a willingness to make the world around us a better place, one small act of kindness at a time.

  • Jace Hamilton is an eighth grader at Davison Middle School. He was nominated by teacher Mrs. Tiffany Hopper and Teacher Apprentice Mrs. Jenny Balabon. Jace treats everyone with respect and shows a sensitivity toward others that is typically found in more mature students. For example, when working in partners or groups Jace repeatedly includes other students that would have otherwise likely felt excluded by their peers. Not only does he invite students to work with him, once included Jace makes sure the student is also included throughout the activity and not just as a bystander. Jace’s cheerful disposition makes these students feel welcomed and valued.

  • Emma Unger is an eighth grader at Davison Middle School. She was nominated by teacher Mrs. Tiffany Hopper and Teacher Apprentice Mrs. Jenny Balabon. This is her second ABC award. Emma sets positive examples for students in every way. She follows school rules, participates in class, reaches for success, and does all of these without seeking attention or praise. She does not brag about her efforts or her successes; instead, she shares in the joy of others' successes. Emma is self-motivated and her actions reveal the importance of strong character. She knows right from wrong and doesn't hesitate to make the right decisions even in the face of peer pressure. We are truly fortunate to have Emma in our class.

  • Oliver Warnke, eighth grader at Davison Middle School, was also nominated by teacher Mrs. Tiffany Hopper and Teacher Apprentice Mrs. Jenny Balabon. Oliver is the type of student and person that is honest, respectful, dependable; everything that is clearly stated in the Cardinal Code. Not once has Oliver turned in late work this year and he is extremely attentive in class. He strives to do his best on every assignment given, putting in time and effort above many of his peers. In his own quiet way, Oliver works cooperatively with all students and encourages others to stay on task. He is never haughty or rude in doing so; instead, he is kind-hearted and sensitive. For example, during a time when students could choose a partner/group Oliver noticed one student who had not been included so Oliver asked that student to join his group. Oliver views others as equal peers at all times. He will discuss answers in a way to help others learn but not in a way to boast his own intelligence. His quiet interactions with others reveals his leadership ability while aiding in their learning. Oliver does this in a way that is natural as he genuinely cares for others.

  • Ethan Koch is a senior at Davison High School who was nominated by social worker Ms. Emily Judd. Beyond his academic strengths, Ethan has an infectious personality that brings joy and excitement to every space he enters. His classmates genuinely enjoy his company, and he fosters a positive and collaborative environment wherever he goes. Ethan’s sense of humor and strong moral compass make him not only a joy to be around but also someone who can be counted on to treat others fairly and with respect. He is a young man who truly cares about others and strives to make sure everyone is treated equally and with kindness.

  • Julia Porcek, is a senior at Davison High School. She was nominated by teacher Mrs. Mary Ann Stedry. Her willingness to volunteer and support others is a testament to her positive nature. Whenever Key Club organizes an event, she is among the first to sign up to help. Julia is always eager to ask how she can contribute to ensure the event's success. Her caring and compassionate nature drives her to prioritize the needs of others over her own. Julia is also passionate about giving to our local humane society, and donating supplies for animals at the Genesee County Humane Society, showcasing her dedication to helping our furry friends. She extends her generosity to local families who cannot afford to provide meals or clothing during the holidays by donating food and clothing to these families. She understands the significance of providing warmth and comfort to those who are less fortunate, demonstrating her compassionate nature. In December, Julia generously offered her time to create festive holiday cards for the nearby assisted living facility for seniors. Her goal was to spread some holiday joy to those who are away from their homes during this season. In addition to crafting the cards, she dedicated an afternoon to playing games and making crafts alongside the senior residents.

  • Erin Sharp is a 10th grader at Davison High School. She was nominated for the ABC award by teacher Mrs. Mary Ann Stedry. Erin is a warm-hearted individual who shines with positivity. She has a bright outlook on life and willingly gives her time to help others, often being the first to lend a hand when someone is in need. One of Erin's standout qualities is her cheerful demeanor. In her daily interactions, she embodies a spirit of optimism. Erin always looks for the bright side in every situation, and her uplifting attitude inspires those around her. She takes a moment to think before responding and is always ready to lend support, whether by offering a helping hand or a listening ear, embodying compassion in her interactions. By being an attentive listener and seeking to understand different viewpoints, Erin encourages a positive and understanding environment in the classroom and amongst her peers.
