** June is Caribbean Heritage Month **
"In June 2005, the House of Representatives unanimously adopted H. Con. Res. 71, sponsored by Congresswoman Barbara Lee, recognizing the significance of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States. On February 14, 2006, the resolution similarly passed the Senate, culminating a two-year, bipartisan and bicameral effort. The Proclamation was issued by President George W. Bush on June 6, 2006" (Caribbeanmonth).
**June is LGBTQ+ / Pride Heritage Month**
"Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as "Gay Pride Day," but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the "day" soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events" (Library of Congress).

** MVHS is Green Flag Eco-School **
Congratulations to Ms. Caponio, Mr. DeBonis, and the MVHS Green Club on recently being awarded the National Wildlife Federation's Eco-Schools Green Flag Award!
"The Eco-Schools program is built on two foundational tools, the Eco-Schools Framework, used globally by over 70 participating countries, and the Eco-Schools U.S. themes, wildlife and biodiversity, climate, and healthy and resilient communities. A successful Eco-Schools program utilizes both tools when working toward or maintaining excellence in environment and nature-based educational experiences and practices at the intersections of the environment, economy, and society.
Throughout the school year, schools complete actions in their online application (ECA) and earn points towards their certification. The depth and extent of these completed environmental and nature-based actions will determine the school’s final certification level.
Schools build an Action Team to accomplish each action, and the results of each action are recorded in the online Eco-Schools Certification Application (ECA) to earn points. At the end of the school year, your certification application is assessed, and a certification level ranging from Bronze to Green Flag is awarded.
There are four levels of certification a school can achieve: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Green Flag. Any school that creates a plan on the Eco-Schools Certification Application but is unable to submit for certification (a minimum of 50 points) will be recognized as a Participant school if they have earned at least 35 points and submit their plan for approval.
The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) EcoSchools U.S. Green Flag is the highest tier of environmental and sustainability certification for schools. To achieve this rating, schools must earn a minimum of 100 points in their EcoSchools U.S. Certification Application by completing specific green initiatives.
Green Fla Certification requires seven specific steps:
- Build an Eco-Action team
- Conduct environmental audits on at least three pathways (e.g., energy, waste, healthy living)
- Develop a quantifiable Eco-Action plan
- Monitor and evaluate progress
- Integrate issues into the curriculum
- Inform and involve the community
- Create a school-wide Eco-Code
When a school becomes a certified Green Flag Eco-School, they receive a digital certification seal that reflects their certification level. This seal can be displayed on a school’s website and social media accounts, in newsletters, in email signatures, and more [Eco-Schools website]."

** NEW 2026-2027 SY Cellphone Policy **
Cellphones OFF and AWAY from 8:10a to 2:55p
No More Lunchtime Use Permitted
Please see the VERY IMPORTANT new Cellphone policy in FCPS for NEXT school year. We will continue to educate our students on this new expectation:
New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1st, 2026
On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cell phone policy with Senate Bill 108. This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.
This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell (8:10 am to 2:55 pm).
High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime.
More details are available on the FCPS Cell Phone Policy webpage.
NOTE: As outlined in the new SR&R regulations, ALL students are expected to follow the established policy and the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). Students who do not comply will face consequences outlined in the SR&R.

Early Release Days
In the event of a 3-hour early release, lunch service will still be available between 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Both cold and hot meal options will be available. Students are still required to pick up complete reimbursable meals; otherwise, à la carte charges will be applied. All meals provided by FNS must be consumed on-site.
School Nutrition Accounts, PINs, Prepayments, & MySchoolBucks

Additionally, students may not be denied a breakfast or lunch meal for any reason. FNS will work with school administrators to communicate low/negative account balances.

School menus offer a variety of entrees, fruits, and vegetables that meet or exceed USDA guidelines, including nutrient standards. Menus, allergens, and nutrition information are all available online at LINQ Connect. School menus will be published monthly, starting one week before the first day of school.
