Lower School - 1/1
Lower School Update - January 1, 2026
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Dear Lower School Families,
As we step into a new year, our goal as a school remains clear: to ensure every child is thriving academically, socially, spiritually, and learning how to rise above challenges as they grow into the calling God has placed on their lives. A new year offers a natural moment to pause, reset, and move forward with intention, and we are excited to do just that together.
January is a wonderful time to talk with children about setting goals, not in a pressured or overwhelming way, but as an opportunity to name what it looks like to grow. Whether that means trying something new, showing perseverance when things feel hard, being kinder to others, or taking greater responsibility, these conversations help children understand that growth is something we step into on purpose. When parents model goal setting and invite their children into the process, it creates powerful alignment between home and school.
As students return on January 5, our teachers will be intentionally resetting classrooms. This includes revisiting routines, reinforcing clear expectations, and re-establishing a culture where students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. We ask that families partner with us by doing the same at home; talking through morning routines, expectations, and attitudes that will help your child start the year strong.
A few important reminders as we return from break:
-
Please be sure your child returns with full winter gear on January 5, including coats, snow pants, boots, hats, and gloves. Outdoor time remains an important part of our day.
-
We strongly encourage families to label all winter items. This helps us quickly return misplaced items to their owners and keeps our lost and found manageable.
We are grateful for the partnership we share with you. When school and homework together with clarity, consistency, and encouragement, children are able to thrive—and to grow in confidence as they rise to new challenges.
We look forward to welcoming our students back and beginning the new year with purpose and hope.
In His Service,
Dr. Rachel David

STAFF INTRODUCTION
Holly Zappia (Grade 1 Teacher)
"Hello everyone! My name is Holly Zappia, and I am a proud member of the Class of 2001. I earned my bachelor’s degree from Crown College and my master’s degree from Concordia University. I have been teaching 1st grade at Maranatha since 2006, and I consider it a daily honor to teach in the community that shaped me. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to pour into the next generation of students. With deep roots in the school and a passion for early education, I am committed to fostering a warm, joyful, and nurturing classroom where all students feel valued and encouraged.
I have been married to my husband, Ben, for almost ten years. I am a devoted step-mom to Makenah (20) and Alie (14), and a proud mom to my miracle son, Micah (4), who is currently attending MCA Pre-K.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family playing games, drinking coffee, and doing crafts with Micah. I love Lake Superior and find myself visiting the North Shore several times a year." -Holly Zappia
WINTER RECESS GEAR
As the colder months approach, it's important to ensure that all students are properly prepared for winter weather. To help with this, we have outlined the specific winter gear requirements for each grade level below. Please take a moment to review the information and ensure your child is equipped with the appropriate clothing to stay warm and comfortable during outdoor activities.
X-TENDED DAY
WEEKLY PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the happiness of Christmas and for celebrating the birth of our Savior, Jesus. Thank You for the love, laughter, and special moments we shared with our families and friends.
As we come back to school, fill our hearts with joy and excitement for learning. Help us to be good learners, good listeners, and good friends. Help us to share, forgive, and help others, and to always try our best, even when things feel hard.
Bless our teachers and everyone who helps us at school. Bless our classrooms with peace, kindness, and fun. Help us to carry the joy and love of Christmas with us each day and in everything we do.
In Jesus’ name I pray,
Amen.
