SBLSD students land full-time jobs with Boeing
This year, 13 SBLSD students are graduating with full job offers to Boeing. While still in school, most of these students received the training necessary for these positions through our Core Plus Aerospace program, a two-year high school advanced manufacturing curriculum that prepares students for high-demand jobs through hands-on learning, opening doors to good-paying manufacturing jobs. Learn more about the program here.
We are so proud of the students who have been offered jobs by Boeing and that our programs are helping prepare our students for needed jobs before they even graduate, setting our youth up for success. Thank you also to our staff who lead these programs!
Congratulations to:
BLHS: Wyatt G., Remy A., Mason K.
SHS: Finnigan H., Hank H., Brian P., Jason R., Blaine H., Danny Z., Brayden T., Omar M., Chris S., Nelson J.
In case you missed it, some of our students were highlighted in The News Tribune for their success:
Brayden Terry came to school prepared Friday.
Terry, a senior at Sumner High School, wore clear protective eyewear, a bright safety jacket and a gray cap with “Boeing” written on it.
He was one of nine students recognized for their plans after graduation during a small-scale signing day Friday, May 5, at Sumner High.
“I’m excited to work at Boeing,” Terry told The News Tribune. “I get to go there with my friends. I get to have connections there.”

WATCH: VFE music teacher surprised with award
Music teacher Ryan Payne was rocking out with his students during Modern Band rehearsal at Victor Falls Elementary last month when he was surprised with some special guests.
Staff from WGU Washington, an online nonprofit university, presented Ryan with the WGU Elevate Award for contributing to a culture of inclusivity and belonging. WGU Washington presents the WGU Elevate Award to people whose work creates pathways to opportunity for others.
Ryan certainly does that for his students. He joined the VFE crew in September, and has since launched the Modern Band program at Victor Falls. The program is a hit for students. Not only does it teach them the fundamentals of musical performance, but they find a place to belong.
“To see students grow, to see them making connections, to see them wanting to be a part of something, you can’t put a price on that,” Ryan told Kelly Hanson, host and producer of KING-TV’s web-based series, Local Lens.
Local Lens was there to capture the surprise. Watch the video below and see what students had to say about Mr. Payne and Modern Band!
Sumner High’s SpartMart opens in new building
The much-anticipated student store, SpartMart, opened inside the new Sumner High School Phase 1 building on Tuesday, about a week after students and staff started occupying the school’s expansion.
After a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 9, their grand opening service featured spritzers, Italian sodas, espresso items and Otis Spunkmeyer cookies. We bet you can guess the top-selling item — cookies!
Eighteen students taking the Retail Management course work at SpartMart, where they learn skills in customer service, cashiering, food safety, inventory management, barista, selling and promotions.
This new location is a much-improved setup from their previous location in the school’s main building. Check out these before and after photos.

SHS Benefit Night raises over $30K for student
The 17th Annual Benefit Night Talent Show and Dinner Auction, held last month, raised $30,660 for the event’s beneficiary Teigan Rassat, a Sumner High School junior, who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer) this past November.

All donations brought in from Benefit Night go to Teigan’s family to help with medical expenses. We thank Sumner High School’s core leadership students for their commitment in planning this annual event and all of the generous donors in our schools and community.
