A Month to Remember The Wave: November 2023

The calm before the (busy) storm...

This month will be the calm before we begin to prepare for the busy holiday season. We will focus on Remembrance Day learning, progress reports, new clubs, and our volleyball skills!

School Updates School Updates

A few things to note:

1. Our primary and senior students enjoyed a fun-filled Halloween day at school, and then travelled to the Agnes Etherington Art Centre to learn about Indigenous Art and create a special print of their own. Many thanks to ISLE for supporting the students by covering the cost of the bus to Kingston.

2. As you may have heard, we have a student at school with an anaphylactic allergy to tree nuts, specifically almonds, cashews, pistachios, and walnuts. He carries an epi-pen, and at this time, our school has not shifted back into being a nut-free facility. Students are very aware of the importance of handwashing before they eat, not sharing snacks from their lunches, and tables are cleaned after meal times. Please feel free to continue sending lunches for your own student as you have been, however if you choose to send birthday treats, snacks, or participate in hot lunches that are to be shared, we ask that THOSE be nut free to ensure safety and inclusion for all students.

3. Many of you have already signed up for, and are using, SCHOOL DAY, our online system for collecting permission forms and paying online for school activities. We will continue to send paper permission forms home, however if you'd like to check out school day and didn't receive your student-specific code that was sent home, just let us know! It saves time from having to enter health card information, carry cash, or sign your name 10 times!

4. Our senior students are hard at work learning and crafting their volleyball skills and will travel to Kingston for a tournament on November 20th.

Absences and Dismissal Absences and Dismissal

When your child will be away, please update their attendance in the School Messenger app so we are aware.

For any abnormal pick up or bus changes, please let us know. The primary class will be using agendas to communicate from home to school. If plans change throughout the day, please call the school and speak to someone directly so we are aware of the change. Email and voice messages are not effective as we sometimes are busy in the classroom and do not check them before dismissal.

Mrs. Caverly says...

Our senior students did an excellent job of running Halloween stations and activities for the primary students in their first big leadership job of the year.

In class, we are learning about literary devices like hyperbole, metaphors, personification, irony, and idioms and then using them to enhance our writing and poetry forms. We are also spending some time in math looking at relationships and expressing them with algebraic expressions, the connections between fractions, decimals, and percentages, and also some beginning coding skills with Micro-Bit chips!

We are also started on building our volleyball skills and looking forward to our tournament this month as well as welcome the holiday season with our annual crafting day for holiday planters.

Ms Cooper says...

We've been learning about making 10s in math. This strategy is cool because it can help you add really BIG numbers.

For example, if you know:

8 + 2 = 10

then you also know

800 + 200 = 1000

and that

8000000 + 2000000 = 10000000

Ms. Sutherland says...

October was a fun and busy month! The Primary class learned about the water cycle in Science, personal safety in Health and Halloween in French. We continued practicing songs in our choir and are excited to share some songs with you in the future!

In the Senior class, we continued our inquiry based learning in Social Studies, practiced asking and answering questions in French as well as learning new vocabulary. The Seniors have the option to participate in the Royal Canadian Legion’s Remembrance Day Contest by creating a poster. If your student would like to participate this year, please sign and return the permission form by Wednesday, November 8th, 2023.
