April Fools

As April approaches, all the pranksters come out of the woodwork! Sly smiles crack on the most serious of faces as we plan little ploys to get the best of someone! It is all in good fun as little tricks and silly jokes are played! April 1st is the one day of the year when it is okay to be a jokester or to have a trick played on you! However, most days no one wants to be played as the fool! How can we avoid this fate?

To be the opposite of a fool is to be a thinker, sage and wise! The secret to not being the fool is not by simply knowing information and having the answer to all the questions! Rather, it is being the one who is willing to keep asking more questions! Being the one that keeps seeking more information! Being the one that never settles on what is known and continues searching for what is next!

Cheers to a day of silliness and a school year committed to fostering the thinkers, the seekers, and the doers of tomorrow! There are no fools at Summit because we will continue to ask more questions and grow! ~ Katie Rexford, Principal

Colorado Measures of Academic Success - CMAS

We will begin our State Standardized Assessment - CMAS in the coming days! All students 3rd - 6th grade take part in these assessments. We use the results from this assessment to help guide our instruction and we are compared with schools across the state! It is helpful for us to see how we are doing and how we can improve our practice! Here are some helpful things to keep in mind...

  • Come to school on time and ready to go!
  • Don't schedule appointments during testing times!
  • Eat a healthy breakfast!
  • Get a good night's sleep!
  • Come with a positive attitude and ready to try your best!

We can make this a great experience for everyone involved by staying positive and bringing our best effort everyday!

We will open the gym to parents who want to come and play with their children! If this is successful, we will try and add another day during the month!

Join us in the gym any time this Friday April 4th from 5:00 - 7:00!

Musical March Madness...still feelin' the beat!

Musical March Madness has songs working their way through the brackets! We will continue to share in a variety of music until we reach a number 1 song! Talk to your child about the songs they are hearing and which ones they voted for each day! I love hearing new and different songs!

School Closure Activities and 2-Hour Delays

We have already put our snow day packets to good use! All students have hard copies of activities in their GOLD Folder. In the event of a school closure, students should complete 1 ELA and 1 Math activity. Students will turn the completed work in on the next school day. Everyone did a great job with this on our last snow day!

We have added a component to our closure activities! In the case of a 2-hour delay, we will share a link to a quick activity for students to complete! Here is a LINK so you can see what we will ask students to complete!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to your classroom teacher, to Ms. Brown at abrown@wpsdk12.org or to me at krexford@wpsdk12.org.

Capturing Kids' Hearts Monthly Character Trait - COURAGE

This month our Capturing Kids Hearts lessons will be focused on COURAGE! As we start our 4th quarter we want our children to tap into their courage. They can tackle harder academics! They can balance desires to play while finishing the year strong! They can prepare to close the school year and set off into the next season!

"Courage doesn't mean you don't get afraid. It means you don't let fear stop you." - unknown

Attendance Matters

A day here, a day there! A little late maybe! Leave a little early!

There are reasons that take us out of school! I will always support family needs and student health and well-being! However, the more consistent students are with attendance, the more successful they will be! They are learning routines and practicing structure! We are intentional about making our time meaningful. Every time a child is absent, it impacts their learning! We are establishing work habits and we want our children to be able to be productive Monday - Friday! Plus we miss them when they aren't at school!

If you need help making that happen, reach out! I am your partner in learning and we can find solutions together! Thank you for your partnership in getting our children to school on a regular basis!

Student Absences and Excuses

Dressed for Success

Our children are still relying on us to help them make the best choices as they prepare for the day! I trust our parents and your judgement as you send your children to school ready to learn! A few things to keep in mind as a general rule of thumb when it comes to clothes...

  • No pajamas or costumes (save those for special reward days)!
  • Don't reveal any B's - bellies, bottoms, or bras!
  • Shoes for playing and running!
  • Easy for students to use the restroom (i.e. rompers might be hard for some girls because they can't unzip themselves)
  • Nothing that is going to take their attention away from learning!
  • Makeup is not necessary at our level! Our children are already as lovely as can be!

Thank you for your support and know that I am here to be your partner as we set our children up for success as studious learners!

Keep poppin' those tabs and sending them in!

Long days call for extra snacks!

Our children have a long day of learning! We appreciate families sending in healthy snacks for their children to munch on to get them through the day! Our children that ride the bus have an EXTRA long day! They are welcome to have an additional snack at the end of the day! If your child(ren) ride(s) the bus, please send a little extra something for them at the end of the day!

Healthy Snack Examples:

  • Trail Mix
  • Piece of Fruit
  • Cut Veggies
  • String Cheese
