Student Health & Wellness
Before break, our School Adjustment Counselor, Mrs. Brahms, and School Adjustment Counseling Fellow, Mr. DeSalvo, collaborated with Mr. Ricci-Munn to deliver the "Signs of Suicide" prevention program in 7th grade health classes. This is a nationally recognized program we have been delivering since 2018. Students learned about warning signs of depression and what they should do if they are concerned about a friend.
8th grade students also participated in a brief lesson reviewing what they learned from the SOS program last year. This lesson also included a discussion of the mental health issues commonly experienced by students in 8th grade (anxiety, depression, and eating disorders). We had productive discussions around what getting help looks like and what the barriers to getting help tend to be.
For the most part, students feel supported by their peers and families. The charts below reflect their comfort levels with help-seeking behaviors. You can help by talking to your student about what they learned in school. A good place to start would be asking them how they would ACT (Acknowledge, Care, Tell).

Exploring Ancient Egypt
Students in Ms. Degnan's and Ms. Ruth's 6th grade history class have been fully immersed in their study of Ancient Egypt! Before February break, students had the chance to engage in a hands-on learning experience by mummifying oranges. Each student carefully followed the mummification process—removing the insides, drying, and wrapping their "mummies" in cloth. The mummies are now safely stored in their decorated sarcophagi, awaiting the exciting moment when they will be unwrapped in a month’s time.
Additionally, students traveled to the Museum of Fine Arts to tour the Ancient Egyptian exhibits. There, they had the opportunity to observe the second largest collection of Egyptian artifacts in the world, providing a fascinating glimpse into this ancient civilization. The field trip brought their classroom lessons to life and offered a deeper understanding of the rich history of Ancient Egypt.
Sixth grade students are off to a great start with this unit and are eager to continue their exploration of Ancient Egypt in the coming weeks!
Team Building
During physical education classes, students teamed up for puzzle relays and block tower relays as part of their Team Building Unit.
Engineering
As part of their Communication Systems unit of study, students practiced being information encoders, senders, receivers, and decoders. The task involved identifying the coordinates of lost and injured hikers on a map, converting those locations to binary code (1's and 0's), then communicating the coordinates to a partner through flashlight signals (A quick on/off for 0's and leaving the light on for 3 seconds for 1's). Students had a great time saving their lost and injured hikers.
Letters from Authors
Seventh grade students wrote letters to authors in January, and some students are starting to hear back. Cece received a letter from Audrey Penn, author of The Kissing Hand; Bentley received a letter from Dav Pilkey, author of the Dogman series; and Porter received a letter from JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series! Authentic audiences and real-world interactions are invaluable in helping students make connections to the importance of reading and writing.
Civics
Students are learning about our Constitution and the powers given to each branch. This learning involves exploring how powers are separated and checked within the Constitution. In this unit, students take on the role of a lawyer and will write a Legal Brief in which they take a stance on whether the Presidency has too much power.
Math Meet Wrap Up
The Hornets' Math Team played in the fourth meet of the season with some impressive results. Five students earned certificates for the top score for the grade. Congratulations to 8th graders Sophie Li and Arion Stremple for achieving a perfect score of 18 points!
Seventh graders Melina Binieris and Aviva Hocherman scored 16 apiece. Sixth grader Maren Beltramini had the top grade level score with 12 points! Score 14 points were 8th graders Harper Hemme, Freddy Jakes, Maya Khan, and Mario Zanetti, along with 7th grader Dante Bruno. Seventh graders Ava Porter and Frankie Villa-French both scored 12.
Also reaching double digits with 10 points were 7th graders Caleb Beausoleil, Clarinda Bradford, Zoe Coshow, Addy Hall, and Marcel Mavarez Perez, along with 6th graders Harley Lage and Harry Larabell. Team One pushed Masco to the end and finished a strong second in a tight battle.
Great job everyone! We would love to have you for the final Meet of the season on Thursday, April 3 at Masco. Practice packets will be available in math classes sometime next month. Go Hornets!
Books & Brunch
Grade seven's DEAR #2 unit, Minds Matter, explored the theme that each learner has a unique mind and individual needs. Each book offered diverse representations of different types of learners and what helps them thrive. Students engaged in book group discussions before enjoying their second grade-level brunch.
Many thanks to our book brunch parent helpers: Shoshy Starr, Mandy Beausoleil, Meghan Nichols, Kate Sundquist, and Erin Richardson
