Parent Newsletter September 2021
St. Louis Language Immersion School
A Note from Dr. Meghan Hill, Superintendent
September 3, 2021
Dear SLLIS Community,
Welcome back! We are launching the 2021-2022 school year with amazing energy and excitement, and we are so glad to welcome most of our students back to campus! We’re also grateful to continue to serve our Virtual Learners despite the challenges of the pandemic. We are looking forward to a safe, healthy, and successful school year - and to tons of learning in French, Spanish, and Chinese!
This year, we are very excited to begin implementation of our new Strategic Plan. You can take a look at our finalized five year plan here: https://5il.co/yeoe. Along with this new plan comes our updated Mission, Values, and Purpose:
Mission: SLLIS provides a bilingual, culturally responsive, transformational education that enriches the children of St. Louis City.
Purpose: To dismantle systems of oppression by creating a just, equitable and inclusive school, St. Louis community, and world.
Values:
Provide an accessible and rigorous bilingual education.
Listen to and engage all voices.
Commit to equity, anti-racism, and cultural competency.
Reflect on and respond to data throughout the school community.
Celebrate mission moments, both big and small.
One of our values at SLLIS is to “listen to and engage all voices.” As our team at SLLIS seeks to continuously improve our school, we have committed to putting thoughtful, proactive structures in place so that we can collect your feedback and make informed decisions. We will follow a Community Engagement Cycle for collecting feedback from parents, staff, and students throughout the year as outlined here: https://5il.co/yf98
Our first order of business this school year is to seek input from our community regarding the SLLIS facility and what kinds of changes we should consider making over the next few years so that it meets the needs of our students and our programs. In the month of September, we are launching a Facilities Feedback Process to learn more from you! Through this process, SLLIS will gain a better understanding of our community’s vision and priorities for future updates to our facility. Then, we anticipate making facility improvements as funding allows.
Here’s how parents can provide Facilities Feedback to SLLIS:
Week of September 7: Parent Surveys - Look in your email and on all our communication channels for the survey link.
September 20 at 12 pm and 7 pm: Parent Planning Sessions - join us via Zoom to learn more about survey results and help us determine next steps.
Meeting ID: 862 8316 0072
Passcode: 348773
Week of September 27: Process Summary - Look in your email and on all our communication channels for a summary of the full process, including an overview of feedback received from parents, staff, and students.
Thank you for your time and attention! I look forward to hearing from each of you as we plan for the future of SLLIS!
Sincerely,
Dr. Meghan E. Hill

SLLIS Visitor Parking Update
September 1, 2021
Dear SLLIS Families,
We would like to update you on some changes that will impact SLLIS visitor parking.
As you may know, SLLIS does not own the parking lot across 19th Street from its campus. SLLIS sold this lot to the Major League Soccer Team in Fall 2019. This sale resulted in a much stronger financial position for SLLIS.
As part of the sale transaction, the MLS team agreed to allow SLLIS to park on the lot free of charge for the next 25 years. The MLS team now has plans to develop the lot into a parking garage. Although this may be challenging in the short term, ultimately, it will be a very impressive development and will give us access to more secure, covered parking for our staff and community.
Effective today, SLLIS has fewer available parking spaces in the surface lot next to the building as the MLS group has closed half of the lot for construction of the parking garage. Dismissal will continue as usual - UNLESS your preference is to park and walk up to pick up your student.
If the lot is full at dismissal and you plan to park and walk up, we recommend the following temporary parking options:
Park at a meter on Pine Street west of 19th Street or east of 18th Street. Please DO NOT park on Pine street between 18th and 19th as this will block the street and cause major delays in the dismissal process.
Park at a meter on Olive Street west of 20th or east of 18th.
Park at a meter on 18th Street.
SLLIS is working directly with the MLS group on future parking arrangements, but please be aware that we simply do not have many details at this point in time. Here are all the details that we are aware of right now:
The garage construction is estimated to take 16 months.
SLLIS will have access to replacement parking during construction and is working with the MLS representatives to determine exactly where the replacement parking will be located. It should be within several blocks of SLLIS’ facility.
SLLIS has submitted a proposal to St. Louis City to vacate (“close”) 19th Street and use it for dedicated school parking. If this is approved, SLLIS will be able to provide parking spaces adjacent to the building in addition to the replacement parking. We are waiting on the Board of Aldermen with the City to review (and hopefully approve) our proposal.
Again, details about the construction timeline and replacement parking are limited at this time. We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we gain more information from the MLS group. As always, we will be proactive in communicating any updates to you. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
SLLIS Central Office Team
Important Dismissal Update - Identification Required
1) PikMyKid Placard for each Student
2) PikMyKid App showing Student Names
3) Photo ID
To ensure we can continue to provide a speedy dismissal process at the end of the day, please ensure you have your identification ready to present to the staff member located at the playground gates, or to the staff member who escorts your child to their vehicle.
If you are waiting in the carline, the quickest way for us to release students to you is by placing your placards in your front windshield. If you need a new placard, please email info@sllis.org to request a replacement, and it will be sent home in your child's backpack.

Survey for Children's Hospital
A Note from SLCH
St. Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH), Shriners Hospitals for Children – St. Louis, and SSM Cardinal Glennon are conducting a Community Health Needs Assessment to identify the most important health issues for children in the St. Louis region. We’re asking parents to fill out this survey to identify health concerns for your children and for children in the community, ranking different items on a four-point scale of how much of a problem they are in the community (Big problem, Medium problem, Small problem, Not a problem).
The survey is completely confidential. Go to this link to take the survey: https://stlouischildrens.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3EqZzaoftyiNu3r
Thank you for helping us do what’s right for kids!
