Students need to learn how to build and maintain positive friendships in a digital world. They should know what kindness looks like when using technology, practice meaningful communication with loved ones through devices, and learn to recognize and include others who may feel left out to develop empathy, connection, and inclusivity both online and offline.

Let's help our students learn about building healthy, respectful, and responsible connections in a digital world. They should understand how technology enables global communication and cultural exchange while understanding their responsibilities as digital citizens, practice repairing online friendships and rebuilding trust through meaningful actions, and learn to distinguish between one-sided parasocial relationships and genuine friendships based on mutual care and reciprocity.

As they get older, students should examine how digital life shapes their relationships and sense of belonging. They should explore the impact of peer pressure and the desire to fit in online, learn to recognize and set boundaries in one-sided parasocial relationships with influencers, and reflect on the rise of AI chatbots to better understand what makes human friendships authentic, meaningful, and irreplaceable.

Why are AI chatbots designed to sound so human-like, and how can that impact our everyday lives?

Recent advancements in artificial intelligence are making chatbot technology more helpful (and clever), while at the same time, it's becoming harder to tell if we're talking to a person or a robot. It's important for students to explore how and why AI chatbots are designed to sound so human-like, which will help them think critically about why this can be both helpful and harmful.
