Planting Seeds
MCDM: Elementary Targets
Each month I will share information highlighting a specific target and connecting activities to the targets.
🎯 Target 3: Career Awareness
Engage students in introductory career exploration activities.
A career awareness activity for elementary students is a fun, foundational experience that opens their eyes to the vast world of work. These activities showcase diverse jobs, helping children understand that there are many different ways people contribute to their communities. They are designed to build the early knowledge and skills students need to start imagining how they might fit into the world of work in the future. -Ai Supported
Key components of career awareness activities:
- Broaden exposure: Activities introduce a wide range of jobs, including those students may not have encountered before, using resources like guest speakers, books, videos, and games.
- Spark curiosity: The goal is to create excitement and encourage children to ask questions about different professions and how they work.
- Build self-awareness: Students can begin to connect classroom learning with real-world roles, and understand how their own skills and interests might be used in the future.
- Introduce career basics: Activities introduce fundamental concepts such as the skills, education, and effort involved in different jobs, and the diverse roles people play in society.
CAREER AWARENESS TIP OF THE MONTH
How You Can Engage Your Students in Career Awareness Activities:
Examples of activities:
- Classroom speakers: Invite professionals from various fields to talk about their jobs.
- Career days/fairs: Organize events where students can learn about different occupations in a fun, interactive setting.
- Hands-on projects: Create job posters or engage in "a day in the life" activities to connect skills with real-world tasks.
- Field trips: Visit local businesses or community sites to see different workplaces firsthand.
- Interactive games and media: Use online tools, games, and videos that introduce different careers and help students explore their interests, like Xello.
- Read-alouds: Use books like Oh, the Places You'll Go! to start conversations about career-related vocabulary, such as "accomplish," "imagine," and "future".
Also, the MAISD provides a "Menu" of countywide career awareness activities to help educators deliver essential foundational career development, such as the popular Mini Medical School. These supported activities are designed to align with a variety of learning standards and fulfill several required elementary targets of the Michigan Career Development Model (MCDM). You can find registration information for these MAISD-supported programs each month in this newsletter (listed below). We also feature several valuable career awareness and networking opportunities provided and supported by our dedicated community partners—be sure to review those listings below as well!

Xello Student Profile Work
This fall, 5th-grade students at Reeths-Puffer Intermediate began engaging with Xello by completing their Student Profiles.
This foundational activity allows students to capture key details about themselves: they save interests, identify skills, rank school subjects, record achievements, save careers of interest, and set initial goals. The profile helps students immediately begin to recognize how their unique strengths and classroom work can naturally connect to the world of future careers.
Once students complete their profiles, teachers can further use Xello as a valuable tool for connecting classroom content to future professions through extension activities. For example, if you are studying a unit on climate, challenge students to research careers connected to meteorology, environmental science, or sustainability to reinforce the real-world application of their learning.
