School social worker selected as Kids First award recipient for April
Social Worker Emily Judd has been named as the April recipient of the Kids First award.
Each month, administrators nominate a DCS employee or contracted staff member who best exemplifies what it means to be “Kids First.” Winners receive a $100 Visa gift card thanks to Mark Owen, owner of MEEMIC insurance agencies in Davison and Flint Township, and a certificate. The winner is chosen at random.
Emily was nominated by Davison High School Principal Mr. Jerry Piger who wrote:
"Emily started this school year with an open mind and the belief that she could help all students at Davison High School. She quickly acclimated and made the adjustment to working in a large school building. During any given day, Emily can be seen talking with students needing an understanding ear and is someone who can be compassionate about outside school issues that may impact being inside school. She does so with a personal approach and professionalism, and balancing the head and heart, to help our students be academically successful as well as socially and emotionally adjusted. In a recent stressful situation, Emily took it upon herself to walk with an upset student and be by the student's side who needed a few minutes to calm down. Emily's thoughtful approach with the student allowed for a positive interaction with everyone involved. Emily then continued to check in on the student for the remainder of the day. She advocates for students and their families that need a champion to support them. Emily is able to help older high school age students and younger students at Hill elementary balancing her time there a couple days a week. It is her Kids First approach that allows her to have such an influence on our students, staff, and families at Davison. She is well deserving of this recognition"
Thank you, Emily, for putting our kids first!

Longtime band booster and Watchdog selected for April Cardinal Spirit Award
Individuals can be nominated by any DCS staff member. Once a month, the building principal can submit one name for that month's drawing. This month, we are pleased to announce our winner for April, Gary Minto. Mr. Minto was nominated by Siple Elementary Principal Christy Flowers, who wrote:
"There are many factors that work together to make a school district great. One very important piece to that puzzle is the involvement of community members. When I think about a dedicated member of the Davison community that has volunteered and given their time for the betterment of the Davison Community Schools I think of Mr. Gary Minto.
When my oldest daughter became a member of the marching band at Davison High School I started seeing a very busy man moving in and out of the band room moving equipment and helping wherever needed. This was my introduction to Gary Minto. He was one of the most dedicated Band Boosters on the team. Gary hauled equipment to practice fields, competitions, and band camp. He set up scaffolding for Mr. Schuster to stand on to oversee marching band formations. He was Mr. Shuster’s right hand man and made sure whatever was needed was handled. My favorite role that Gary filled as a band booster was when he could be heard announcing the Marching Band at football games. His voice became an important part of Friday night festivities. I can still hear his announcements whenever I hear him speak. Gary served even after his girls graduated and he could often be seen with his darling granddaughter toddling around behind him.
Fast forward many years and that darling toddler began attending Siple Elementary. Sure enough, Gary Minto was one of the first men to sign up to serve as a WatchDOG. I have now had several of his grandchildren. Gary signs up for a WatchDOG day to spend with each individual grandchild. There are no shortcuts for Gary. He makes sure each one gets their own special day to have Grandpa with them at school. He lights up when he is working with the children and their faces are covered with grins as well.
Gary has served in various ways over many, many years. He puts the needs of the students and school district ahead of himself, because he has a heart for his family, this community, and our school district. For this reason, I proudly nominate Gary Minto for the Cardinal Spirit Award. I appreciate his dedication and look forward to seeing him at Siple and around the District for many more years to come!"
