What's Happening at Talley Street?
Talley's Summer Reading Challenge
Did you know that the Talley library is hosting a summer reading challenge for rising 3-5 grade students? Students who participate in the challenge will receive an invitation to a summer reading celebration. You can find out more about the challenge and community programs on our summer reading website!
Also, please email Mrs. Long (along@csdecatur.net) photos of your child/family reading over the summer to be featured on our summer reading bulletin board once school starts!
All students who send photos or participate in the challenge will also earn HOUSE POINTS! (they'll be entered after sorting day for rising 3rd graders!)

Green Team News
Composting Report
Our first two weeks of composting at Talley have been a smashing success! According to CompostNow, we have diverted approximately 364 pounds of food scraps since starting. Our scraps will produce 120 pounds of rich compost and avoid releasing 34 pounds of methane at the landfill. That's enough to offset 1,063 miles driven by a car and is equivalent to parking it for 4.8 weeks. Even better, the compost can grow 60 tomato plants, yielding 902 delicious tomatoes. We are so grateful to all the student and parent volunteers who have dedicated their time and effort to assist with this endeavor.
Green Team by the Numbers
By all counts, Green Team's second year of service has been one to note. Not only did we nearly triple the number of student volunteers, we also diverted nearly 1,200 pounds of plastic film from the landfill and roughly 150 pounds of snack wrappers. We added recycling in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch; we launched the Green Team Store to collect hard-to-recycle materials; and we initiated a monthly guest speaker series.
In the last month of school, we have recycled more than 2,000 milk/drink cartons...which brings us close to 10,000 for the school year! We also had a record collection of plastic utensils (1,670 for the month and more than 8,000 for the year), aluminum cans (638 for the month and 3,600 for the year) and beverage bottles (449 for the month and 2,000 for the year). Let's keep up the good work in 2026-2027!
