Whats happening in our classrooms?
ELA w/ Mrs. Remington
e have accomplished a lot in the month of May! The kids performed reader’s theater and worked on their fluency skills — and they did a fabulous job.
Next, we moved on to one of my favorite projects. Students worked together in groups to plan a vacation and create a presentation about it. With a $10,000 budget, they researched flights, hotels, and three different excursions for a destination of their choice. They had a week to prepare, and then they presented their slideshows — and they were amazing! You should definitely ask your child to share their presentation with you.
We’re wrapping up the year with a short story, and then the students will be writing letters to their future selves, they will receive these when they graduate from high school.
It’s been an awesome year of growth!
Math w/ Mr. Redstone
We completed our work with the integer exponent rules as well as work with scientific notation. Students learned about 5 specific integer exponent rules: product rule, quotient rule, power rule, zero exponent rule and the negative exponent rule.
We also learned how to write numbers in scientific notation and learned how to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers that are written in scientific notation.
For the time remaining, we will work on square roots, cubed roots and the Pythagorean Theorem.
Science w/ Ms, Cloutier
It has been a great couple of weeks completing a couple chemistry projects with the kids! The students all really enjoyed learning about acids, bases and the process of neutralizing them. We are taking our final test here at the end of this week and beginning of next. It has been wonderful working, learning and growing with your students this year! It is always so wonderful to watch how much they mature over the course of their 8th grade year. I have no doubt that they will do wonderful things in high school.
Social Studies w/ Mr. Oliver
We are wrapping up our Year in Social Studies. Students should. be leaving with a good handle on what the Constitution provides for Government structure, procedures, and limitations and powers. To wrap up this Year, students will be learning a little bit about Economics; starting and primarily focusing on Scarcity, wants, needs, and choices. I have enjoyed teaching students about the basis of our Government, and History as a Country. My hope is that I have had a hand in creating a number of socially responsible, civic minded, active participants of society.
Literature w/ Ms. Maurais
We’ve officially wrapped up our poetry unit in 8th grade literature and are closing out the year with an exciting nonfiction signpost unit. Students will explore a variety of engaging nonfiction texts while learning to identify key signposts such as word gaps, numbers and statistics, quoted words, contrasts and contradictions, and absolute or exaggerated language. This unit brings the year full circle, as we began by examining persuasive language. Now, students are applying their analytical skills to nonfiction, strengthening their critical thinking and reading comprehension. These tools will help them unpack meaning, understand the author's purpose, and approach complex texts with confidence.
