PTO Needs Volunteers!
All Are Welcome
Here's the latest news from the Pierce School PTO! We're busy making plans for our kids to have the best end of the school year ever, and we'd love your help with several activities!
First up is Teacher Appreciation Week, which is May 4-8. We have lots up our sleeves to celebrate our incredible staff, and we're keeping our plans top secret. However, if you'd like to help in any way, please reach out to Tanisha Lowell, our president, at ptopierceelem@gmail.com
On Saturday, May 16, the PTO will once again be selling pizza at the food court at the Children and the Arts festival in downtown Peterborough. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and you can sign up for various shifts here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0A4BAEAE29A5F49-63444436-pierce
This is a fantastic local tradition, and Pierce School always has a great showing. Even if you can't help us with the pizza sales, we hope to see you and your kids in the parade and enjoying the festival!
We will also be selling freshly squeezed lemonade at this year's Rhubarb Festival on Saturday, June 6, at Sawyer Park here in Bennington. Sign up to help us out here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0A4BAEAE29A5F49-63444664-ptolemonade
The Pierce PTO meets on the second Wednesday of each month from 6-7 p.m. at the school library. Join us! All are welcome.

ConVal Day of Service
A huge thank you to the ConVal students who spent their day of service with us. These volunteers worked hard to enhance our school grounds by clearing debris from the Gaga Pit and painting decorative stones for the playground. We truly appreciate their energy and help in making our outdoor spaces shine.
Ms. Besson's Class is Growing and Learning
Birds of a Feather
This week in kindergarten, we had so much fun learning about birds and how they lay their eggs in the spring! In science, we created our very own bird nests using different materials just like real birds do. In math, we are focusing on recognizing, counting, and writing numbers 1–20. We are so proud of all the learning and fun happening in kindergarten! We have also been making the most out of indoor recess by using our imaginations to build, create, and explore together.
Powerful Learning in Mrs. Powell's Class
Zooming Through the Alphabet
It has been a busy week. We welcomed the Cornucopia Project back to. Students worked hard in the garden. On "Z" for Zoom Day we face timed with a music producer in Nashville Tennessee! Today we welcomed high school students for their day of Service. We can't wait to see people at Children in the Arts tomorrow!
Mrs. Sutton's Class are Serious Scholars!
Digging into History
We were also fortunate to have three wonderful community members help us with our learning this week. Adrienne's mom and brother (former Pierce student) taught us all about fossils! She had the opportunity to dig for them in Utah and then shared her knowledge with us. We had a blast using magnifying glasses and creating fossils rubbings.
Also this week, Susie Spikol Zoomed with our class for Z day! We learned all about her life, how she got started as a naturalist and what she loves about the natural world. We are so grateful for all the time she has spent with us this year. She has gone above and beyond!
I hope to see families for the Children and the Arts Festival on Saturday! The parade is amazing and students are invited to march with their puppets. Look for the big black bear on wheels in the PES parking lot. Grab some pizza from the PTO tent. All events are free to families and the weather looks fantastic! If you haven’t attended in the past, you really should see this! Our artwork is also hanging in the Steele’s window downtown. Check it out!
4th Grade is the Place to Learn!
Hard Work Paying Off
Testing, testing, testing! That was the bulk of this week's focus. 4th graders were focused and showed perseverance and grit on the NHSAS assessment and I am very proud of their efforts.
In between testing we had fun Zooming with Mr. Germain on his birthday and painting rocks for our "X-tra Beautiful" day in partnership with CVHS students.
Additionally, we reviewed writing genres and started our last writing assignment of the year which generated a LOT of excitement. Students are writing narratives from their perspective as an Abenaki child living in this region long ago. We read the book, Full Wolf Moon: A Lunar Calendar of the Anishinabe so students would include a specific setting in their narrative.
In math, we have been working on metric and US customary measurements for length, weight, and volume. Did you know a jumbo paper clip weighs one gram?
Lastly, we learned about geometric solids and how to identify by name, their faces, edges and vertices.

Learning the Musical Alphabet
The Kindergarten class studied Tempo (the speed of the music). We discussed fancy music words like Presto and Largo, and Accelerando! They loved using different props and visuals to identify, sing, and play a variety of songs and explore changing tempos in the music.
The 1/2 and 2/3 classes both continued their study of the music alphabet (DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO), and learned about the music staff. They identified space and line notes and developed their understanding of how melodies are written in a more advanced way.
The 4th graders added more notes to their recorder skills and worked hard to practice reading music on the lines and spaces. They used their knowledge to do a lot more independent recorder practice. They are busy preparing for their performance at the 4th Grade Stepping Up!
