Dear Arleta Parents and Caregivers,
Students and staff are working hard and all is going well! We’ve begun this year’s “all school write” which we’ll have posted for you to see at November conferences, which will take place November 23rd and 24th. (Conference sign-ups will be sent to families on Friday, Oct. 30.) Students and staff (and any of you who would like to participate) are all writing to the prompt “Something unique about me is”. This connects to one a health standard and learning target in 1st/2nd grades. Some classes have already had students write and some haven’t, so it’s a great opportunity to ask your child what they wrote, and/or help them pre-think about what their own unique (special, rare, distinct from the ordinary) qualities are!
Here are some updates and upcoming Engagement Sessions related to the Rightsizing scenarios. The scenarios are proposals, not final decisions, and community engagement remains an important part of the process as PPS continues evaluating the options and preparing recommendations for the Board of Education. Arleta is one of 21 schools in PPS most impacted by the scenarios, so it’s important that families follow along best you’re able to make time for, as the process continues.
District website with links to all information: www.pps.net/rightsize.
Our two Arleta parent representatives on the Superintendent's districtwide Site Council (The Village Table) met Wednesday along with Dr. Armstrong and the other parent representatives from each PPS school. Our parent representatives are Aida Newman and Nicole Cerra. The goal of the meeting was to explore the proposals, ask questions and bring forward perspectives from our school community.
Our next Arleta Site Council October meeting is Monday, Oct. 26: Aida and Nicole are also on our Arleta Site Council and our meeting notes are posted on our school website.
Tonight, Thursday October 15 at 7
PPS parents have organized a meeting just for parents: purpose is to discuss and strategize about the most important questions to bring to board members, coordinate lobbying in Salem, and upcoming advocacy ideas. The full agenda can be found here.
Also Tonight, 6-8, Thursday, October 15 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm at Kellogg: Community Engagement: Disability Voices
Families of students with IEPs are invited to join PPS for a dedicated Community Voice conversation about the proposed rightsizing scenarios. You can bring your specific questions about how proposed school, program or boundary changes could affect your child's services, supports and educational experience, directly with district staff and share the considerations you want included as the process moves forward. Food and interpretation will be provided. Note that I had shared about this event in a previous newsletter but the date was updated at the request of the Special Education Parent Advisory Committee.
Board of Education School Board Meeting | October 20th Board Meeting
The PPS Board of Education will continue into the next phase of the process: exploring the proposals, gathering community perspectives and continuing the work that will inform the Superintendent's final recommendation to the School Board in November and the Board’s anticipated decision in December.
📅Thursday, October 22, 2026
📍McDaniel High School | ⏰6:00pm - 8:00pm
🍽️ Food and Childcare Provided
Please RSVP Here!
In partnership with Self Enhancement, Inc. and the Center for Black Excellence, this conversation creates a dedicated space for Black and African American families to engage directly with district staff and share the experiences, concerns and priorities you want considered as PPS continues exploring the scenarios.
The conversation will center Black student experiences, school belonging, educational access and opportunity, community relationships and the historical significance of schools within Portland's Black communities. Families will have an opportunity to discuss what matters most to you and what district leaders should understand as the rightsizing process moves toward a final recommendation.
Thank you for your beautiful Arleta students and thank you Arleta Staff, making us who we are!
Warmly,
Lisa
ARLETA NEWS
GIVE YOUR FEEDBACK ON THE RIGHTSIZING PROCESS
The Village Table is the name for PPS Superintendent Armstrong’s Site Council: a group of parent representatives from each PPS school who help to shape district decisions during the “rightsizing” process: reflecting on what’s been heard, helping shape priorities and trade-offs, and highlighting and showcasing the real-time impact of decisions to the superintendent. They have a survey and would greatly appreciate your feedback to help inform next steps.
Please click the button below to take their brief survey.
COSTUME EXCHANGE CONTINUES THROUGH OCTOBER
We have plenty of costumes looking for new homes, so throughout the rest of October we’ll have opportunities to browse Wednesdays* from 2:20–2:40 p.m., during and just after pickup in the breezeway.
We’re also still accepting gently used costume donations. Donations can be dropped off during Wednesday browsing times or placed in the donation bin under the table in front of the school office.
And looking ahead: We’re continuing to collect donations for our upcoming Athletic Gear Swap. If your family has outgrown sports or recreation gear that still has plenty of life left, donations can also be brought to the Wednesday browsing times or left in the donation bin outside the office.
Athletic gear will be available for pickup Wednesdays during pickup in November
Questions about donating costumes or Athletic Gear Swap donations? Contact sustainability@arletapta.org.
*The Swap will not be happening on Wednesday, October 21st, which is an early-release day.

BEAT THE BELL
For the 4-day week of October 5-8, we had 95% positive attendance (up from 92% the week before) and 96 tardies averaging out to 24 tardies a day (higher than last week's 21 tardies a day).
Getting kids in their seats and ready to learn on time starts them out on the right foot, in sync with their peers instead of starting the day already struggling to catch up. This column will give you weekly tips and tricks for getting to school on time.
This week's tips for getting to school on time:
Choose clothes and shoes the night before, lay them out in same place
Walk by a special place before school; go by the chicken house!
At a quiet time, ask if anything about school is scary or upsetting. Follow up with your child's teacher or Principal Lisa.

NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
CELEBRATE ANCIENT MAYAN CIVILIZATION THIS NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Recorded ancient Mayan civilization starts around 2000 B.C.E. and ends around 1519 C.E. with its Golden Age starting around 250 C.E. and ending around 900 C.E. Their civilization stretched from southern Mexico through Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador.
The Maya built thousands of pyramids, used for worship and royal duties, and cities that were home to thousands and sometimes hundreds of thousands of people at a time. During their golden age, Mayans built terraced farms, with homes grouped in plazas. The Mayans had an advanced mathematical system that allowed for detailed astronomical and engineering calculations and wrote early books on folded paper made from bark.
While colonization erased much of the culture, knowledge, and engineering of the Early Mayans, archeologists are working hard to fill in the gaps and discover more the past. Watch this PBS Nova episode below to learn more interesting facts about the Maya!
POETRY CORNER
Poems are little packets of creative writing: stories, details, thoughts that quickly and intensely explore little and big life experiences. Reading a poem to your child is a great way to promote literacy and to start conversations about things that your child notices and what's important to them. Each week, we feature a different poem that you are your child can read together.
Be Glad Your Nose Is on Your Face
Be glad your nose is on your face,
not pasted on some other place,
for if it were where it is not,
you might dislike your nose a lot.
Imagine if your precious nose
were sandwiched in between your toes,
that clearly would not be a treat,
for you’d be forced to smell your feet.
Your nose would be a source of dread
were it attached atop your head,
it soon would drive you to despair,
forever tickled by your hair.
Within your ear, your nose would be
an absolute catastrophe,
for when you were obliged to sneeze,
your brain would rattle from the breeze.
Your nose, instead, through thick and thin,
remains between your eyes and chin,
not pasted on some other place—
be glad your nose is on your face!

LET'S MAKE ART
PAPER TISSUE MARIGOLDS FOR DIA DE MUERTOS
Marigolds, or cempasúchil in Nahuatl, are believed to help guide loved ones who have passed back home to visit ofrendas on Día de Muertos. When live marigolds aren't easily to hand, marigolds can be crafted from tissue paper to add to decorations.
To make your own marigolds you will need: orange tissue paper, green pipe cleaners, and a pair of scissors.

WHO GETS DRAWN? RACE, GENDER, AND AI BIAS IN CHILDREN'S MEDIA - OCT 14 & 21
Embrace Race's latest lecture and conversation, "Who Gets Drawn? Race, Gender, and AI Bias In Children's Media" will take place over two Wednesdays, October 14 & 21, noon–1 pm ET. Register once for both sessions, and get the recordings and resources even if you can't make it live. Save my spot →
Our kids are learning about the world from a range of media - books, videos, social feeds - and, increasingly, AI tools. But those media and tools don't show every child, or every community, the same way. Who's the hero? Who's missing? Who does an AI image generator picture when a child asks for a "doctor" or a "genius"?
In this two-part series, two leading kids' media researchers and creators will break down what kids are seeing and share best practices for being in conversation with them about it. They will also share media recommendations for kids and families and give you tools you can use with kids to create less-told stories we all need.
SESSION 1 · WED, OCT 14 · NOON–1 PM ET
Glitch in the Picture: Decoding Race, AI Bias, and Kids' Media
What the research says about race, representation, and AI bias in the media kids love, plus the language and confidence to start the conversation.
SESSION 2 · WED, OCT 21 · NOON–1 PM ET
Remix the Screen: Building Anti-Bias Media With Kids
A deeper look at anti-Blackness, gender expansive representation, and how bias gets built into media and AI tools, plus shows that get it right and hands-on ways to co-create characters and stories with kids.

BABA YAGA PUPPET SHOW - OCT 24
Baba Yaga
Sat - Oct 24, 2026 - 11:00am PDT
Magenta Theater
1108 Main St
Vancouver, WA 98660
Tickets $10 Each - Get Tickets Here
Adapted from the children’s book by Ernest Small, this Slavic story of Baba Yaga features a curmudgeonly witch with a taste for bad children, a hedgehog prince who travels through the forest on his noble rooster, and a little girl named Marusia who is in search of turnips. As Marusia and her friend the hedgehog match wits with Baba Yaga, the most marvelous story unfolds with magical brews, a treacherous dragon and Baba’s outrageous house on chicken legs.
Free craft in the lobby before and after the show.
This musical production features some moments that some small children might find scary and may not be suitable for children under 6. A good rule of thumb is: If your child can make it through the scary bits in an animated Disney movie, they will most likely do just fine! We do not recommend this production for children under 6 who have never attended a puppet show before.
WOMENS' TOUR AT LONE FIR CEMETARY - OCT 26
Meet the women at rest in the cemetery. This tour highlights the unique stories and roles these women filled in the community as Portland transitioned from a frontier town to an early 20th century city. Stop at the gravesites of the prominent founding families (Terwilliger, McLoughlin andMacleay) as well as lesser-known women whose contributions improved the lives of Portlanders.
Women’s Tours are on the fourth Saturday of the month starting at 10 a.m. The tour begins at the Soldiers Monument, located in the center of the cemetery, and will last about 2 hours.
Lone Fir Cemetery is located at 649 SE 26th Ave. in Portland. For more information about events happening at Portland’s historic cemetery, visit the Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery website.
