Farewell to the 2021-2022 School Year

As the school year comes to a close, I think back on the many accomplishments across the district. The end of the school year never winds down. It is more appropriate to say that it ramps up, especially with the many concerts, performances, school traditions, athletic contests, and awards ceremonies that families get to enjoy. I have enjoyed attending many of these events and I am simply in awe of the pride in our students from our Titan families.

As it's said, the days are long, but the years are short. Our administrators, staff, and parents have worked so hard to create many opportunities for growth and success. Take time to appreciate your child's growth and success this school year. Together we believe in them, so they can believe in themselves.

To the Class of 2022, I BELIEVE IN YOU. I wish you all the choices and opportunities that life can offer. Know that the entire Titans community joins me in congratulating you on your success and wishing you the best in your next chapter.

Thank you to our families and staff for all you have done this year to support our students and to ensure their safety and success.

Have a great summer! Be safe, be kind, and ALWAYS be a Titan!

4th Grade Say It Summit

4th graders from our 3 elementary schools participated in the "Say It Summit" last week. It was an opportunity that encourages students embrace their uniqueness and what makes them special. This event originated approximately a decade ago at Grindstone Elementary. Over the years it has expanded to all BCSD elementary schools. This year's event provided an opportunity for our 4th grade students to meet and interact before they all attend the middle school in the fall. Activities and discussion were centered around being inclusive, how to resolve conflict, and embracing our uniqueness and differences. Students even filled in a footprint with what they will say or do to leave a positive footprint in their school or community. Staff members along with student facilitators from Berea-Midpark High School led the students in a variety of interactive activities. Keynote speakers included News Channel 5's Homa Bash and local tv and Cleveland sports personality Nicole Marcellino (MHS '01). Our students were able to get to know future classmates and also get to know a little more about themselves and what makes them special.

Seniors receive $141,500 from local scholarships

On May 19, the generosity of our community was shown to 164 seniors at the Senior Scholarship Awards. There were a variety of scholarships awarded, however the common theme among the recipients was that they are students who are really good at school, work really hard, and make really great choices. Dr. Smithberger stated, "This community is unbelievably generous. I've had the privilege of working at a few different high schools and our high school has given out the most local scholarship money I have ever seen. Our community cares about our schools and cares about our kids."

REMINDER: School Meals for the 2022-23 School Year

For the past two years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has offered waivers to Nutrition Services Programs across the United States, allowing these programs to offer all students breakfast and lunch, at no charge. These waivers will expire on June 30, 2022. This means that starting next school year, 2022-2023, the Nutrition Services programs across the nation will return to normal, pre-pandemic operations. Families will once again be asked to complete and submit a current school year Free/Reduced Meal Application if they would like to see if their students qualify based on the income of all family members. In the past years, the first 30 days of the school year carryover status from the previous school year. Since there were very few meal applications submitted over the past couple of years, there are a few things that parents/guardians can do to ensure their students are ready to start the 2022-23 school year and eliminate the possibility of charges.

  1. Complete a 2021-22 meal application. This will give the student(s) a 30-day carryover status to start the 2022-23 school year and give families time to complete the new 2022-23 meal application at the start of the school year.

  2. Complete the 2022-23 meal application as it is made available by USDA before the start of the school year. Doing this will cover the student for the entire 2022-23 school year and no other steps will be necessary unless there is an income change during the school year.

The Berea City School District Nutrition Services Department will provide notification as soon as USDA makes the new 2022-23 meal application available, in order for all families to be able to complete the meal application as soon as possible at the beginning of the 2022-23 school year.

The Nutrition Services Department is committed to assisting families and making this transition back to normal operations as easy as possible. Please feel free to contact the department at 216-267-2142 or email bcates@bereaschools.org

Community Conversations with the Berea Board of Education

Berea Board of Education

The Berea Board of Education holds regular community conversations to give the public access to board members outside of the formal public participation setting of a meeting. Residents will have the opportunity to meet and discuss any concerns they may have with two board members during a 30 minute time-slot set aside prior to each Board of Education meeting in 2022. The goal of this effort is to more effectively connect with the public and learn more about the community. Visit our website at www.berea.k12.oh.us/boe for a list of 2022 meeting dates.
