Attendance Basics πŸ’― Attendance Basics πŸ’―

We know mornings can be hectic, alarms mysteriously stop working, and sometimes everyone gets into the car before realizing someone is still looking for a shoe. πŸ‘Ÿ

Here are the attendance basics for students and parents/guardians:

πŸ“ Absences

All absences must be excused by a parent or guardian during the term in which the absence occurred.

Parent tip: Don’t wait until the end of the term to remember that your student was absent three weeks ago. Future-you will appreciate it. πŸ˜„

⏰ 1st Period Tardies

Parents or guardians may excuse up to 5 first-period tardies per term.

Once those five are used, students may choose to work off additional tardies by:

  • Working with a teacher

  • Attending Math Lab

Students: Five may sound like a lot… until you realize you've already used four. πŸ‘€

Parents: Yes, we know mornings happen. That's why there are five. πŸ˜‰

🚢 Tardies During the School Day

Tardies that occur during the school day cannot be excused by a parent or guardian unless the student was previously checked out through the office.

Students may choose to make up these tardies.

In other words: β€œBut my mom said it was okay!” doesn't magically erase a tardy.

🏫 Closed Campus

Salem Junior High is a closed-campus school.

Students may not leave campus without being properly checked out through the office by a parent or guardian.

And yes, this includes lunch. πŸ•πŸ₯ͺ

Want to leave campus for lunch? A parent or guardian needs to check you out through the office.

Students: The sidewalk is not a secret exit.
Parents: Please help us keep track of your humans. We like knowing where they are. πŸ˜„

πŸ‘― Group Check-Outs

We do not allow group check-outs.

We know it can be tempting to think, β€œSince you're checking out my student, can you just take these five other kids too?”

Unfortunately, that's not how this works. πŸ˜‚

Because group check-outs create additional challenges for teachers and staff, each student must be checked out individually through the office.

Lunch-Time Check-Outs πŸ•

Trying to find a student during lunch can sometimes feel like a Where’s Waldo adventure! To make things easier, please check students out a little before lunch or after lunch is over.

Let’s save everyone the lunchtime scavenger hunt!

⭐ The Attendance Golden Rule

Be here. Be on time. Stay on campus. Follow the check-out rules.

We promise we're not trying to ruin anyone's day. We're just trying to keep track of approximately a million junior-high-sized humans while making sure everyone is safe, accounted for, and where they're supposed to be.

Thanks, parents and students, for helping us make attendance a little less dramatic! πŸ’™

Mental Health Screener 🧠 Mental Health Screener 🧠

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Nebo District is offering a mental health screener for students on the evening of September 21, 2026, at Diamond Fork Middle School from 4 pm to 8 pm. We will be using Terrace Metrics software to measure mental and emotional strengths, as well as screen for anxiety, depression, trauma, and suicidal ideation of students in grades 6-12. Students in grades 3-5 may participate to be screened for mental and emotional strengths, anxiety, depression, and trauma.

If you would like to participate, please sign up here for an appointment. The assessment tool takes an average of 15 minutes to complete. Afterward, you and your student will meet with a school counselor or social worker to discuss the results of the assessment and receive resources, as needed.

Link to Parent Information Video (5 minutes)

Prior to taking the mental health screener, a consent form needs to be completed by the parent/guardian. The consent form will be available upon arrival at the screener event.

If you have any questions, please contact your school counselor.

Sincerely,

Jade Andersen

Coordinator of Student Services
