What a fantastic first week in 5th grade we've had! We welcome Poppy, Nicholas, Logan, and Malachi to this great class! I've really enjoyed getting to know this group of amazing kids, and am looking forward to a great year!

This week, we organized our classroom, and came up with our TWO class rules: 1. Try your best. and 2. Be respectful. We felt that all of our wonderful ideas for class rules fell under these two more general ones. We then made posters to hang in the classroom to highlight these expectations.

We dove straight into learning this week with a small writing assignment, exponents in math, and learning about genetics in science. We wrote paragraphs about ourselves (I learned a lot!), and did some popcorn writing with some very silly and creative stories! We used our summer reading book, Wonder, as the foundation for our science lesson. I hope to watch the movie in class next week, as most of the class has not seen it. It is rated PG, so please let me know if you would like to opt your child out of this viewing. Next week, we will begin our more routine schedule.

The class has had two reminders from Mrs. Simolon. Firstly, please remember that there should not be play equipment out before school (balls and toys). Secondly, on spirit shirt or free dress days, please be thoughtful on the length of shorts for our girls. Thank you!

Math Videos

We dove straight into math this week, and you may have heard that I video record all our lessons in math. I do this for a few reasons, but really as a review option for students, an aid to help parents who need help helping their children, and also for students who may be absent. To access these videos, visit www.educreations.com and use the following to log in:

Once logged in, you can find "MATH" under "CLASSES" and find the videos. Let me know if you have any questions!

Santa Cruz Island Fundraiser

We are already anticipating our Santa Cruz Island trip in the spring. Our trip is scheduled for April 23. To fundraise for this field trip, 5th grade sells popsicles to the school on Fridays. If you would like to donate popsicles, please send me an email and I will send you all the info! We do try to purchase the same kind that are allergy friendly, cost efficient, and easy to find. Getting the same kind helps there to be no argument among students. We typically ask for about 200 popsicles per donation. Thank you to the Feramisco family who has volunteered to purchase popsicles for our first sale on Friday, August 29!

About Me

My name is Kyla Rightmer, and I am thrilled to be your 5th grade teacher this year! This is my 22nd year here, and I have taught Kindergarten, 5th grade, and middle school here. I also went to school here as a child, and my children are now students. Blake is in 6th grade, and Theo is in 4th. I love this school so much, and am so excited to share my joy with you.

After graduating from here in 1996, I went to Villanova Preparatory High School in Ojai, and then on to Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. I later went for my MA at Antioch University in Santa Barbara. In my free time, I love being outside and spending time with my family.
