SLES Family Roar: September
SY 26-27
From the Principal
Dear St. Leonard Elementary Families,
I hope you enjoyed a wonderful Labor Day weekend and had an opportunity to relax and spend time with family and friends. As we return to school, we are settling into our routines and beginning to see our students grow in confidence, independence, and excitement for learning.
The first few weeks of school have been filled with smiling faces, new friendships, and meaningful learning experiences. Our staff has loved welcoming students back and seeing the energy they bring to our classrooms each day. Thank you for your partnership, support, and trust as we work together to create a safe, positive, and engaging learning environment for every child.
As we move into September, we look forward to continuing to build strong relationships, establish routines that support success, and celebrate the many accomplishments of our students. We encourage families to stay connected through our school communications and to reach out whenever we can support your child.
We would love to know if we are communicating enough. Last year, I sent a survey to ask if you prefer a monthly newsletter, bi-weekly newsletter, or weekly newsletter. The vote was that monthly newsletters were enough. With a new school year here and new families a part of SLES, we want to ask again!
Please complete this super short survey to provide your input! We want to make sure we are communicating with you enough. SY 2026-2027 Partnering with Families at SLES: Communication Feedback – Fill out form
Thank you for being an important part of our school community. We look forward to a fantastic month ahead!
Warmly,
Dr. Nicole Jimney
Principal

Books Beyond the Badge
DFC Baker wants to read to all of our students! She will be visiting classrooms to read a story throughout the month of September. Please read below for an introduction:
My name is DFC Baker with the Calvert County Detention Center. I am excited to introduce a new community outreach initiative called “Books Beyond the Badge.”
Through this initiative, correctional officers will visit elementary schools throughout Calvert County to read to and interact with students. Our goal is to promote positive relationships between Corrections and our community while creating meaningful, positive experiences for our younger generation.
We hope to make this opportunity available to students across all grade levels and academic abilities. We believe every child should have the opportunity to read, learn, ask questions, and build positive relationships with members of their community.
For reading selections, teachers may choose a book that is appropriate for their classroom, or we can provide a selection of age-appropriate books and reading options.
Ultimately, Books Beyond the Badge is about more than reading a book. It is about building connections, encouraging learning, promoting understanding, and showing our children that the people who wear the badge are also members of the community who care about their future.
