Virtue Wars: We Battle for Goodness!
A few weeks ago while we were all attending Mass together, I asked the Lord how we could help our students grow in holiness and become better learners. He gave me a wonderful idea: let's have the classes compete against each other to grow in virtue for Kindregarten-6th Grade.
The system is simple: classes earn points from their homeroom teachers, specials teachers, and lunchroom staff. Students can also win extra points for their class by turning in "virtue stamps"—a special recognition given when a staff member catches them practicing virtue. Conversely, repeated rule-breaking results in a demerit and a subtraction of points.
What a difference this has made in our daily behavior! Our 5th and 6th graders won the first week, and Kindergarten took the title last week. Right now, it is a incredibly tight contest between 4th and 2nd grade! Our goal is clearly in sight: for every single student to excel in learning and in goodness. As we renew Sacred Heart School, this foundation of goodness is vital to academic success. You should be proud of your children—they are truly becoming exceptional students!
All Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Lansing cultivate "sanctuaries of education" where:
- Identity: Students know and live their true identity as beloved sons and daughters of God the Father, created in His image and likeness.
- Formation: Students grow in knowledge, wisdom, and virtue through a foundation rooted in the Catholic Liberal Arts.
- Purpose: Students develop a love of learning as they pursue Truth, Beauty, and Goodness while deepening their relationship with Jesus Christ.
This education prepares our students to flourish in this life and sanctifies them for the next.
Blessings,
Anne Atkin, principal

This week, Bishop Earl Boyea begins his next year-long formation initiative for the faithful across the Diocese of Lansing, and it focuses on what is most important to all of us – our families! “Bishop Boyea’s Year of the Family” video series invites us all to explore how the Catholic faith can more fully flourish within our homes, otherwise known as our ‘domestic churches.’ A weekly newsletter tailored specifically to Catholic school families, the first of which is linked here, will offer a short reflection on each “Year of the Family” episode as well as include practical suggestions for how to joyfully foster a thriving (albeit busy!) Catholic home. As this new series begins, let us pray that all families across the Diocese of Lansing experience an authentic encounter with the Lord and grow evermore closer to Him.
