School Supply List
Our teachers will talk with your students regarding what they need to bring with them daily. For the first day of school, students can simply bring a folder, notebook, and writing utensil. Returning students can also bring their charged Chromebook. New students to SMS, including 6th graders, will be issued their devices during the first few days. The SMS supply list is attached below.
*Please note: 6th grade students will receive an iPad. The iPads work with headphones that have a USB-C port, which is different from the standard headphone port.
Backpacks
Over the past few years, we have found that our students are incredibly successful when they carry their daily school supplies in a backpack rather than using a locker. To support this, our teachers work hard to streamline daily materials so students aren't carrying a heavy load throughout the day. We want every student to feel comfortable, so we offer flexibility:
The One-Week Trial: We ask that students try using just their backpacks for the first week of school.
How to Request a Locker: If your child decides after the first week that they would still prefer a locker, they can easily request one through their grade-level counselor.

In the Wentzville School District, 8th grade students have the opportunity to participate in sports that follow the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) guidelines. The sports that are available at South Middle are a great way for our 8th graders to get involved with the school during their last year of middle school and be introduced to MSHSAA sports. At SMS, we offer the following sports:
Fall Season
Cross Country: This sport is open to all 8th graders and does not involve any tryouts. All students compete at their own level. This season begins in late August after the start of the school year.
Winter Season
Boys and Girls Basketball, Poms/Dance, Cheerleading: These activities all have a tryout process that student-athletes go through to make the team. Information will be shared regarding tryouts in early October.
Spring Season
Track: This sport is open to all 8th graders and does not involve any tryouts. All students compete at their own level. This season begins in early March.
Any student-athlete in Missouri must have a completed physical on file in the school prior to trying out or participating in any MSHSAA sanctioned activity. If your child is going to participate in 8th grade sports, we recommend getting the physical completed as soon as possible. Feel free to bring completed physicals to South Middle School during office hours in August or have your child bring it with them on a regular school day. Physicals are turned into the main office.
The link below will take you to the MSHSAA physical form.
