Surfside Shark Bites
Week of October 26-30, 2026
A Note From Principal Frandsen
Hello, Surfside families!
It was another great week at Surfside with so many great things going on. Construction progress is being made daily on the new school; students are visibly making progress in their learning; our soccer team is upping their play in every game, and the art projects around campus are bringing out the talent in our students. We're also excited to celebrate our recent graduates and their respective next steps in college, trade school, and the military.
As we turn the corner into November, we approach mid-quarter. Please do yourself and your student a favor by logging into Aeries and reviewing your student's attendance and grades. Knowing your student's status helps us work together to ensure your student is setting themselves up for success. We are grateful to work in collaboration with you to build a future for your scholar.
Have a great weekend and stay dry, or, better yet, experience the joy of splashing in a rain puddle!

Elementary School News
Dear Families,
Students had an opportunity to learn about forces and energy and design a vehicle that could carry an egg (ping pong ball) and safely transport it. Many had wonderful ideas and used cardboard, magnetic tiles, and other materials to construct their vehicle. I love how students get to experience all grade level science due to the nature of our school.
Have you checked out your child’s google classroom recently? We have uploaded new science materials for each unit. Click on Google Classroom, click on the grade level, click on Classwork, Click on Module 1, Click View More (if necessary). There are videos available to watch for your child’s grade level and they can do some of the activities based on them.
Grades 3-5 will need to complete the Interim Assessments of Reading, Writing, and Math the week of Nov 9-13. Grades K-2 will need to stay home that week so I can have all 3rd-5th graders complete their testing that week. We will start testing each day at 9:30am-11:30am. All students will need to test in-person.

New District Cell Phone Policy
"During the Day, Off and Away"
To create a focused learning environment and support student mental health, Oceanside Unified School District will now require all student cell phones to be off and stowed in backpacks upon entering campus and remain off until leaving. Exceptions are made for students with IEPs or 504 plans if specified for medical or anxiety-related needs, as determined by site administration. Classrooms have landlines for students to contact parents if needed, and students will have access to their phones during emergencies. The policy aims to reduce distractions, enhance engagement, and prevent cyberbullying, while also reducing the risk of phone theft or loss. Support and disciplinary actions for policy violations could include warnings, phone calls home, and phone confiscations, with increasing consequences for repeated offenses. OUSD is committed to student safety and mental health, fostering academic and emotional growth. For more details, refer to OUSD's Handbook.
