TJMS LEAP to Find Their Beat! TJMS LEAP to Find Their Beat!

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) Learning Enrichment Academic Program celebrates a successful summer season filled with STEM-focused fun and engaging activities. LEAP is a Nita M. Lowey 21st CCLC grant-funded program with a focus on STEM, free of charge for the students at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. Students range in age from 10 to 14 years old with the program accepting rising sixth graders to rising ninth graders.

This summer, students participated in themed weeks such as Camp LEAP, LEAPLand, LEAPapalooza, and LEAP for the STARS with a wide range of courses like Money Matters, Culinary Arts, Dance, and more. The young participants chose classes with the intention of exploring their interests. Students reported that classes felt more productive and the offerings were more intentional. One student even noted how high engagement led to decreased phone use throughout the summer program.

“Families are loving the program, noting the involvement of students in the program and their love for LEAP,” said Project Director of the LEAP & WAZE Programs Kiersten Jones, “Especially families who were concerned about their transitioning children from sixth to seventh grades, they expressed noticing that students have learned to build healthy peer-to-peer relationships.”

Confidence in Every Language Confidence in Every Language

The Summer ESL Enrichment Program builds upon students’ previously acquired skills in their English Language Learning classrooms and their core classes. The program, finishing its fifth year, enables Lodi High School students (and students entering ninth grade) to increase their academic confidence and social and personal abilities to support their tireless efforts throughout the school year. As these students adapt to their new culture, environment, classes, and teachers, this program affords them time to focus on reading comprehension, word recognition, and how to decipher context meaning (or high vocabulary words) and then transfer these skills to core subject classes like Math and Science. The program emphasizes the importance of meaning and communication, empowering students to be more confident in language learning.

Throughout the summer, teachers witnessed the growth and tenacity of students as they welcomed challenges and overcame them, through their desire to learn more. Overcoming the language barriers gave students an intense sense of accomplishment. Congratulations to the students finishing this program! We are certainly proud of the expectations they have not only met but far exceeded.

Summer Steps to Success: Title I Edition Summer Steps to Success: Title I Edition

zoom_out_map

Lodi High School’s Title I Summer Success Program, with nearly 10 years in place, is designed to support students in grades nine through 12 by providing an opportunity to earn academic credit through focused, rigorous coursework. The program emphasizes the development of essential academic skills to help students progress confidently in their educational journeys. Its core mission is to reinforce values such as perseverance, accountability, and a commitment to learning—equipping students to overcome past academic challenges and prepare for future success.

The summer program paralleled the experiences of participants’ peers who completed the same course in September through June.

“As one of the lead educators in the program, my goal was not only to teach core content but also to help students build the skills needed to absorb, understand, and apply knowledge both in the classroom and beyond, including in post-secondary settings,” said James Lewis, Supervisor of Special Education and Title I Language Arts Coordinator.

This opportunity changed students’ approaches to learning, most notably through conversations with graduating seniors on topics related to exploring career paths, saving money and being fiscally responsible, managing credit cards, and long-term planning to prepare for their futures.

Summer Anatomy and Physiology: The Hearts & Brains of the Future! Summer Anatomy and Physiology: The Hearts & Brains of the Future!

The Anatomy and Physiology Summer Program, in its ninth year, introduces Lodi High School students to the human anatomy, preparing them to enter the Pre-Med Program. The course is honors-level and highly intensive, as it is only 20 days long and is only open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. This unique program is a pathway for students intending to become medical professionals, exposing them to high-level learning experiences. For example, they explore the cardiovascular system through a sheep’s heart dissection.

A memorable project from this course is the Swim Cap project, where students map the human brain onto swim caps while their classmates wear them—demonstrating their knowledge of the brain and skull anatomy. Projects like these showcase students' knowledge and allow them to explore future interests.

This year’s cohort was motivated throughout the program and very engaged, with some students even repeating the summer program from last year. Students were left with a strong curiosity about the human body and the field of medicine, leaving inspired for their journeys ahead. Our students didn’t just learn anatomy — they grew a love for it that traveled from their brains to their hearts and every other organ they studied.

Middle and High School

The Middle School and High School Extended School Year Program aims to maintain a consistent and continuous learning experience for middle and high school students. By attending this five-week program, students avoid the “summer slide” where a long summer break could cause them to forget what they’ve learned during the school year.

Throughout the five weeks, students continue to receive services, which can include occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language development, reading support, and counseling.

The MS/HS ESY Program involves students from sixth grade through 12. Many of the same students have been involved since the launch a few summers ago. Their growth is noticeable!

Students have formed relationships with their peers and teachers, marking social advances. Those are aided by weekly yoga sessions and lessons on impulse control and understanding social cues.

Academic successes
include improved basic reading and math skills. Overall, students enjoyed a positive environment, designed to help them feel comfortable and valued so they can go on to grow both socially and academically.

Elementary School

The Elementary Extended School Year Program has been in effect for four years and serves students from Pre-K to fifth grade. The focus of this highly successful program is to provide students with the opportunity to extend and fulfill their educational needs.

Each week focused on a different theme that incorporated the new online curriculum. Reading/ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies were taught using technology and teacher-created activities. There were multiple activities planned for each grade level, such as a dinosaur dig during our Dinosaur study, creating ocean animals out of reusable materials for Ocean week, and planting seeds to grow as vegetables during Farm and Garden week.

Reading specialist, Jenn Costello, created silhouettes of each student, followed by students completing a “Who am I?” poster. Other students then had to guess which student the poster was referring to and choose the student’s silhouette.

The social/emotional well-being of the students was met with Wellness Wednesdays, where they engaged in yoga and meditation. To build friendships and community, the students enjoyed taking trips bowling and to the Bergen County Zoo.

Culminating our program, the students celebrated by creating beach gingerbread houses, melted marshmallow snowmen and Holiday ornaments.

“The students were very happy and excited to be a part of the program, our attendance was 98% every day,” said Elementary ESY Supervisor Francine Santos. “As the students were leaving on the last day, they expressed their gratitude and wished that the program would be longer.”

New STEM Lab at TJMS New STEM Lab at TJMS

A new STEM lab is on its way to Thomas Jefferson Middle School, which will provide middle school students with exposure to instruction in engineering, design, and bio-medical concepts as a precursor to the engineering and bio-medical exercise programs at the high school. This lab will boost STEM activities throughout the middle school and allow students to access more hands-on learning to match the 21st-century skills they'll need. These renovations are estimated to be completed by the start of the school year.

The district began major renovations to the high school auditorium and its entrance. This project includes a new sound system, state-of-the-art theatre lighting, acoustical upgrades, audio/visual upgrades, and a stage expansion.
