Dear Hazeldale Parents and Guardians!

Happy Fall!

Thank you so much for all your support with donating funds, and volunteering your time to support the Hustle for Hazeldale! We appreciate all the volunteers and Team H.O.P.E. who always does an amazing job organizing and supporting the school! We look forward to another successful run for our preK students on Wednesday and for kinder through 5th grade students on Friday!

During the beginning of his school year, Hazeldale staff has spent time learning about suicide prevention as well as the Dual-Language Program and best strategies to support ALL students. We appreciate the Hazeldale community for advocating and supporting the district in providing days for professional development, like the one coming up next week (October 10th).

We want to remind everyone of the importance of attendance! Regular attendance has a direct correlation to academic success as well as high school graduation. We have noticed that we have students who are constantly late for school. At Hazeldale, classes start at 7:45am. Please, make sure you have a routine in place of going to bed early. We also have noticed students who are not picked up on time. Please, remember that Hazeldale dismisses at 2:20pm. Make sure you pick up your child on time.

On a side note, please notify the school office by noon (12pm) if you need to change your student going home plan. If calling after 12:00pm, we will not guarantee that we will be able to accommodate the request. Thank you for understanding.

CROSSWALK AND CROSSING GUARD SAFETY REMINDERS CROSSWALK AND CROSSING GUARD SAFETY REMINDERS

To help keep all our students safe, please review and reinforce the following important safety guidelines with your student(s):

  1. Always wait for the crossing guard’s signal before crossing the street. The guard is there to ensure children cross safely and at the right time.
  2. Use the designated crosswalks—never allow your student to cross in the middle of the street, especially on Farmington Road, where traffic is often fast and heavy.
  3. Avoid distractions: Remind your child to put away phones, headphones, or other distractions while walking near or across streets.
  4. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing, even when in a crosswalk, to ensure they see you.
  5. Walk, don’t run across the street. Running increases the risk of tripping or not noticing oncoming traffic.
  6. Be a role model: Children learn by watching. Always follow these safety rules yourself when walking with your student.

Your partnership in reinforcing these habits helps create a safer environment for everyone in our school community. Thank you for your continued support!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS IMPORTANT REMINDERS

A few important reminders:

1. Please, DO NOT park your car on the car line. The car line is only for students to get dropped off and walk to the building by themselves.

2. Also, please, only park in a handicap spot if you have a handicap permit. (A first offense is a Class C violation with fines ranging from $165 to $500 for an individual - ODOT)

3. Please, we are a citrus free school. DO NOT send oranges, cuties, lemons for your student's lunch/snack.

4. "Smile! You are on camera!" Want to remind everyone that we have cameras outside the building that are recording activity daily. We will be adding signs soon!

5. Please, remind your student to NOT play with the pebbles in the courtyard. We have had several windows broken after hours! We are monitoring and can use your support reminding the community to keep our building as a safe space for everyone! Thank YOU!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HAZELDALE LIBRARY A MESSAGE FROM OUR HAZELDALE LIBRARY

Families, we have seen an increase in the amount of preventable damage to our library books in the first month of school. We need your help to remind students of safe book care practices such as not eating, drinking, or doing arts and crafts near their library books. We ask that you help your child find a space at home to store their books away from pets and younger siblings who often like to "taste" our cool books. When a book is lost or damaged and cannot be recirculated, we ask that you contact Mrs. Turinsky in the library to discuss payment towards a replacement copy. Thank you for your help keeping our books safe for our growing readers!

LOST AND FOUND LOST AND FOUND

Families can contact jennifer_mcmillen@beaverton.k12.or.us to deliver coats, hats, etc. to students if you can tell us which one is yours. Please write your students' names in their coats!

Please remember that if your students' coats are not picked up within one month, they will be donated to the Clothes Closet.

REPEAT REPEAT

TALENTED AND GIFTED SCREENING TALENTED AND GIFTED SCREENING

As was announced at the end of last school year, the BSD is transitioning from using the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to the Naglieri General Abilities Tests (NGATs). This decision aligns with the BSD’s commitment to meet the needs of all students as described in our strategic plan.

In October 2025, BSD 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will be screened for giftedness in their classrooms using one of three NGATs, unless families choose to request their children to be given the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).

  • 3rd grade students will take the Naglieri General Ability Test - Nonverbal.

  • 4th grade students will take the Naglieri General Ability Test - Verbal

  • 5th grade students will take the Naglieri General Ability Test - Quantitative

During this school year (2025-26), families who want to request that their student take the CogAT must complete this google form link. Requests must be submitted by September 22nd. Please remember, students cannot be tested with the CogAT in consecutive years, so if your child took the CogAT during the 2024-25 school year, they will not be allowed to take the CogAT again this year. As of the 2026-26 school year, the district will only use NGATs. If you request that your child be given the CogAT, they will not take the NGAT in their classroom.

If your student is on vacation or ill when their class takes the NGAT, we will have a make-up day for all tests missed at the school. If your student misses the make-up test, they will not be tested this year. Exceptions may be made for 5th graders upon the discretion of the District TAG Coordinator.

TOO SICK FOR SCHOOL TOO SICK FOR SCHOOL

It's normal for children to get sick from time to time. But when should a parent keep a child home?

Below are some guidelines to help you make the decision about when to keep your child home from school. The recommendations are based on the guidelines provided by the Communicable Disease Program of the Washington County Department of Health and Human Services. They were developed to help prevent the spread of potentially contagious disease.

Home is the best place for a child who is ill. If your child is sick with a diagnosed communicable disease, please notify the school as soon as possible. This notification will greatly assist others who, due to medical reasons and/or treatments, have weakened immune systems and may require immediate and specialized care.

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

We are excited to announce that our district is adopting the Raptor Safe mobile app as part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining visitor management in our schools. This app builds on our existing visitor procedures, offering a more convenient and secure check-in process for everyone.

What is the Raptor Safe App?

The Raptor Safe app offers a convenient and secure way for visitors to manage and verify their identity before arriving at a school. With the Raptor Passport feature, visitors can pre-verify their identity, allowing for a seamless sign-in process when they arrive on campus.

How Does It Work?

When visiting a school, visitors can use their secure QR code generated by the app to expedite the check-in process. QR codes automatically regenerate every 5 minutes to ensure security and prevent misuse.

Getting Started

The Raptor Safe app is available to all visitors across the district. To download the app, please visit
https://raptortech.com/raptorsafe-app/.

For questions or assistance, please contact the school office. Thank you for helping us keep our schools safe.

BREAKFAST & LUNCH BREAKFAST & LUNCH

The building is open to all students at 7:30am, including students who will be having breakfast at school. If a student arrives late and needs breakfast, they will be able to get it from the cafeteria and eat it in their classroom.

Both breakfast and lunch are provided free for each student each day. Families do not need to complete the benefit application.

The Beaverton School District Menu for Elementary Schools can be found here.

RESOURCES RESOURCES

Birthday Invitations Information

Parents/Guardians should NOT bring treats, balloons, etc. to the classroom for a “birthday party.”

In addition:

1. Birthdays may be celebrated in the classroom through the reading of a child's favorite book or by creating cards, for example. This approach will allow for each student’s birthday to be recognized, maximizing instructional time, as well as limiting the sugary foods that are consumed when regularly celebrating birthdays in the classroom, avoiding allergic reactions and honoring the diversity among our students and families.

2. If your child wants to invite children from the class to a birthday party outside of school, the invitations should not be delivered to children at school unless the whole class is being invited. Please note that student phone and addresses are confidential and therefore cannot be provided by the teacher.

3. A great way to celebrate your child's special day is to send to school their favorite picture book to be shared aloud with the whole class. Make sure you let your student's teacher know about it.

Student Personal Belongings

Please, remember to label all your student's personal belongings as well as to send extra clothes in the backpack. Accidents can happen and the school doesn't have extra clothes to provide to all students. Thanks for understanding!

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL MEDICATION AT SCHOOL

If your student will need medications at school, prescription or over-the-counter, parents need to bring those to school and fill out a Medication Authorization Form. You can stop by our school office during Meet Your Teacher night with your medication and fill out the form. You can find more information on medication requirements on our district website:
