Lutherville Lab Report
What's gone down & what's coming up at the leopards' lair.
February 25, 2022
It was a jam-packed, spirit-filled short week at Lutherville Lab! On Tuesday we enjoyed celebrating TWOsday (2-22-22)! Check out the mini-gallery below of students and staff showing their spirit and a special schoolwide read-aloud on Google Meet. Wednesday morning, as part of our ongoing celebration of Black History Month, we took part in Art for Learning's engaging virtual presentation of Blackstastic -- a children's festival celebrating the joy of Black history and culture. Friday we celebrated the launch of Read Across America week (next week) with Book Character Spirit Day. Check out the images of the fun, joy, and spirit of the week in the galleries below.
Next week is Read Across America Week! Reminder to get in and activate those Read-A-Thon accounts for the PTA fundraiser ASAP before the big launch on March 2nd. Click on https://www.read-a-thon.com/readers/r/rHliAs/1 and following the simple instructions. **The first 75 readers to activate their page will receive a prize, so don't wait!**
A couple items of note from the School System this week:
Finally, if you have not done so already, please take the BCPS Stakeholder Survey! This provides vital input on how our community perceives our efforts to serve your children well. This is an integral piece in School Improvement Planning. Thank you for taking a few minutes to share.

Exciting Reading News!
Next week is Read Across America week. Many exciting events will be taking place at school, and we wanted to share them with you.
1. Students will be engaged in listening to diverse stories from across the county. I have included the link at the end if you would like to be a part of the fun too!
2. We will also be having a daily trivia contest. Students will listen to clues on the morning announcements and try to guess the storybook character with their classmates. Dress like your favorite storybook character today was a great segway into next week! Thank you to everyone who was able to participate.
3. Our students will be treated to a virtual read-aloud by an international and renowned writer and activist, Alice Walker. Ms. Walker will be reading her newest book, “Sweet People Everywhere” and will talk about the book-writing process. This book is a powerful celebration of humanity that tells the story of a young boy getting his first passport, taking the boy-and the reader-on a journey through a series of countries around the globe where “sweet people” can be found.
4.Our PTA Readathon begins next week. The PTA is sponsoring an evening read-aloud during this event. Teachers will be reading on a google meet link on Wednesday, March 2, 9, 16 from 7-7:30. Come dressed in PJ’s and snuggle up for some favorite books and fun with the teachers.
Parents often ask how they can support their child’s reading journey at home. The best way is to share your love of reading with the kids. You can listen to books on tape, read stories together, visit our free library in front of school, or the local library or utilize Raz-Plus stories through Schoology. Reading develops vocabulary and a life-long love of books.
Happy Reading!

Math Fact Fluency Initiative!
While teachers are developing the discussion, reasoning, and inquiry math practices each day, students mastering their math facts is also essential to success as students encounter more complex problem-solving. If students have to pause to compute basic facts, they lose valuable "brain power" from thinking through and solving more challenging tasks. We are seeing this compound for some students in intermediate grades.
So, we're taking action! Each grade level has given a baseline assessment using First in Math (an app on student Chromebooks that students can also use to practice their math facts!). Teachers are assigning and encouraging ways for students to practice their facts, and we'll assess again just before spring break.
If enough students have grown or put in their efforts in practice, grade levels will win their rewards! There's a range from popsicles and story time in the courtyard for our primary students, to Mr. McComb performing some Tik Tok dances with 3rd graders, to Kona Ice for our intermediate students.
The key is growth! We want students to grow their skills and see that their efforts yield results and to work together toward a goal. So, teachers are also encouraging students efforts in various ways.
Please consider practicing your child's math skills with them. I practice my 2nd graders multiples in the car when we're moving about town -- we started easy with 3s and 4s and are moving up as he masters them. First in Math games are another engaging way to practice. Keep it fun and positive!
