Letter from the 'Editor'

Hello LSSPs,

I hope everyone is doing well. Spring is about to be sprung, brackets are getting built, and a week away from the campus is coming. While I know there is a lot of work to be done, I hope everyone finds some time to rest and reset during Spring Break. Please be sure to take some time for you and enjoy some of the time off.

If you need anything, as always please do not hesitate to reach out.

Keeping on being School Psych'd!

Research Opportunity - TAMU

Members of the F.U.E.R.S.A.S. lab at Texas A&M University are conducting a study to evaluate

current practices in the psychoeducational assessment of emergent bilinguals (a.k.a. ELLs). This research is being supervised by Dr. Sara Castro-Olivo, an associate professor and researcher in the School Psychology Program at Texas A&M University. Her research focuses on culturally responsive practices for ELLs/Emergent bilinguals, refugees, and children of immigration.

School psychologists and educational diagnosticians who engage in the assessment of emergent bilinguals, or English language Learners (E.L.Ls), are eligible to participate in this study. Participation is voluntary! All the information provided by participants will be completely anonymous. We will not be able to trace your responses back to you. In appreciation for your time/participation, participants will enter a drawing for one of twenty-five $25 gift cards to amazon. Participants who share a non-identifiable report, will enter an additional drawing for one of ten $100 gift cards to amazon.

If you are interested, please click on this link for the survey and additional information. Instructions for entering the drawing to gift cards will be provided at the end of the survey.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our team leaders for this project (i.e. Dr. Castro-Olivo, at s.castro-olivo@tamu.edu, Mr. Israel Arevalo at iearevalo@tamu.edu, Mrs. Sunny Olsen at sunnyolsen@tamu.edu), and Mrs. Wualu Altamira at waltamira@tamu.edu.

We deeply appreciate your time and commitment to advancing the culturally responsive practices for emergent bilinguals.

More Research opportunities!

Hello fellow LSSPs!

A colleague and I are interested in school psychologists’ use of consultation and collaboration in ethical problem-solving. We are asking school psychologists to complete an anonymous survey and anticipate it should take you about 5-15 minutes to complete the survey. The survey has been approved by the IRBs at The Citadel (Study Title: Collaboration and Consultation in School Psychologists’ Ethical Problem-Solving) and Stephen F. Austin State University (AY # 2022 – 2158). If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jill Dawes at jdawes@citadel.edu.

Please feel free to share the link with other school psychologists who may be interested in participating!

To complete the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HGC7CVB

Description and Explanation of Procedures:

This survey aims to collect information about school psychologists’ experiences with ethical dilemmas. Specifically, you will be asked about your use of problems-solving models and consultation/collaboration when encountering ethical dilemmas in your school psychology practice. The survey should take about 5 to 15 minutes of your time.

To participate in this study, you must be 18 years of age and a school psychologist. Your participation is completely voluntary. Should you decide not to participate, or should you decide to discontinue participation at any point in time, you may do so without penalty or prejudice.

Potential Benefits:

Your participation in this study will lead to a clearer picture of what ethical problem-solving looks like in practice, including the barriers school psychologists face when engaging in ethical problem-solving. While there are no direct benefits, the results of this study could inform training, professional development, and standards of practice of school psychologists.

keya's book club

I have always gotten a lot of questions about the books I am reading (mostly because approximately 84% of my sentences start with "you know I just read this book..."), so I decided to start sharing some of my personal favorites that I have recently read (or in some cases, reread).

This month: The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel

In addition to being a psychology nerd, I am also a personal finance nerd, so this point hits a wonderful intersection of my own personal nerd-dom. Mr. Housel pulls together years of his writing into a wonderful collection to help think about our behavior as it relates to money, and ways to outsmart our habits and instincts that can lead us astray.
