2.) March Hunt for Gold- Copy and cut apart the alphabetic pots of gold and hide around the staff room, office, or classroom. Give each person/student a copy of the puzzle and have them find the symbols/letters to solve. (Answer to the puzzle is on the back of the master).
Happy Complimenting and Hunting for Gold!

Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987.
Did you know that the actual celebration of Women’s History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978? Presentations were given at local schools, hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest, and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa. A few years later, the idea eventually caught on within even more communities, school districts and organizations across the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The next year, U.S. Congress passed a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.
Women's History Month provides us with an important and necessary opportunity to amplify the voices, perspectives, experiences, and contributions of women. The resources below help to shine an important spotlight on women, including how we can continue to incorporate women and their important history beyond just the month of March and into our everyday teaching and learning.

Ramadan is Starting! Please See Below for Important Reminders!
Ramadan is a special month for Muslims, marked by fasting from sunrise to sunset, prayer and reflection. This year, it is expected to begin on Feb. 28 and end on March 30, with Eid-ul-Fitr on April 1 or 2, depending on the moon sighting.
For many students, Ramadan is more than just fasting. It is a time to focus on kindness, patience and personal growth. While most students continue their regular activities, some may feel more tired, have trouble concentrating or need short breaks, especially in the afternoon. Offering a quiet space during lunch or adjusting physical activities can help support them.
Some students may also take a short break for Zuhr (noon) prayer, which falls during school hours. Schools can help by providing a quiet place to pray. Families might not attend after-school events as often since they are preparing to break their fast at sunset. A small but thoughtful way to show support is by saying "Ramadan Mubarak" or "Ramadan Kareem."
When Ramadan ends, students may take a day off to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with their families. Schools do not need to make major changes, but small acts of awareness and flexibility can help students feel supported and included during this meaningful time.
Please read the information below to learn more about Ramadan and how to help support students who are observing it.
The San Juan Unified School District will be offering ‘to go meals’ to students fasting during Ramadan. The district’s Nutrition Services Department has developed a specific menu for the campaign, promoting nutrition security and health equity for its students.
The program is made possible via a waiver by the California Department of Education, granting school districts the ability to serve non congregate meals as part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs. Participants in Ramadan generally fast between sunrise and sunset, leaving school meal serving times inaccessible for those students. This waiver from the state allows us to send meals home with children to meet their nutrition needs once the daily fast has concluded.
The Ramadan To Go Meals will begin on March 3 and run through March 28. The Nutrition Services department has developed a special menu of non-meat packaged meals that can be taken home and consumed. Each day’s package will contain one breakfast and one lunch per student. Students observing fasting during Ramadan can check with their school on details for pick up times.

Supporting undocumented students and their families: Resources and ICE protocols
In light of heightened interest regarding the rights of our students and school communities in the face of potential federal immigration enforcement, we have taken proactive steps to provide resources and support.
For Families: We’ve launched an external webpage featuring helpful resources, support tools and answers to frequently asked questions. This page can be shared directly with families to help them understand their rights and access assistance. The page can be accessed directly at www.sanjuan.edu/immigration.
For Staff: An internal intranet page offers additional resources, including a detailed protocol for addressing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions and inquiries at sites. Log in using your full district email and credentials to view the page.
As part of this protocol, school administrators are to report any inquiries or other activity by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials as soon as possible to Legal Services and Community Relations.
A one-page handout has been developed that includes protocols to follow should ICE activity occur on your campus. We also have a Serving All Students document that can be shared as a printed resource. Both can be found on our intranet page.
Please review these materials with your site staff and share the printed resources as needed. We encourage staff to check the intranet page regularly for updates as we continue to monitor the situation. Together, we can continue to uphold a safe and supportive environment for all members of our school community.
Exciting Youth Opportunities to Share!

- Introduces college success resources and career workforce opportunities in STEM in the public and the private sector.
This free conference averages over 1800 attendees each year, from predominantly low-income and underrepresented backgrounds. Attendees leave empowered, believing they can achieve their goals and knowing the resources available to them to do so.

A few tips for teens before you come "shop" with us:
Clothes may be tried on, but please wear under-clothing that makes it easy to change (e.g., sports bras, leotards) as there will be limited privacy.
Please don't wear makeup when trying on items. It can get on clothing and ruin them.

Conference Tips to Help Build Positive School-Family Partnerships
Elementary Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences are Just Around the Corner!
It's hard to believe that Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming up already! It's easy to think about conferences as stressful and exhausting, but what’s most important is that effective communication is essential for building positive school-family partnerships and sets the foundation for all forms of family involvement in education. Conferences are the perfect time to continue nurturing this important school to home partnership! Below are some tips to help make your parent-teacher conference time as effective and impactful as possible:
Whether you're meeting with families on Zoom, by phone, or on-site, help parents know what to expect at the conference. Provide guidance and set expectations — whether on paper or online. Let parents know what they should be prepared to discuss — any changes at home, should their student be present, and a reminder to be punctual. The most important part is how parents can be partners in their student’s learning.
Consider providing some online resources for parents, such as these: Tips for Successful Parent-Teacher Conferences at Your Child's School and 20 Questions to Ask During a Parent-Teacher Conference.
It's a good idea to have some work from each child displayed in the classroom if you’re face-to-face, or ready to screen-share with parents, if you’re meeting remotely.
Have a list handy of educational apps and community resources for the family. This is especially useful right now during the pandemic, when many parents may be in need of additional help/support with vital social services like food distribution and health programs.
Plan on talking only about 25% of the time. Leave the rest open for Q&A and exchange of thoughts, ideas, and goal-setting.
At the Conference: Resources and Best Practices for Teachers
Remember the parents want to leave this meeting feeling that you truly care for their child. Discuss the child's social and emotional behavior along with their academic progress.
Allow yourself a buffer between meetings so parents don’t feel rushed through the conference. Even five minutes between can make a difference if a conference is running long.
Student-led conferences are a win-win for the teacher, student and the parent. In the student-led conference format, students and teachers prepare together, and then students lead the conference while teachers facilitate. Parents tend to become more reflective about their children’s progress and understand how to help at home through this modality. Students also better understand their strengths and challenges and the correlation between their effort, progress, and resulting work quality.
Thanks to Parent Square for these great tips! Wishing you all a wonderful Spring Parent-Teacher Conference Week ahead!

The 43rd annual Fair Oaks Chicken Run is on Sunday, May 5. Runners will be taken down the scenic streets and pathways of Old Fair Oaks knowing that their hard work will benefit the community, as a portion of the proceeds will go towards supporting the San Juan Education Foundation.
Whether you want to participate in their competitive five-mile race, run or walk in their non-competitive two-mile course or enroll your child in the Chicken Chase Kids Race, this event has something for everyone. For more information about the event and how to register, please visit the Fair Oaks Chicken Run website.
Problem Resolution Tip of the Month: The Importance of Validating Feelings
Often times, parents come with concerns or issues that stem from feelings and not always facts. Before focusing in the facts of what actually happened, take a moment to validate their feelings and empathize with what they're experiencing, no matter if their feelings are based on reality or perception. Acknowledging feelings, displaying empathy, and expressing validation will lead to a more productive discussion around the facts and, more importantly, productive next steps to take in the situation.
