HUSKY HIGHLIGHTS
Hinesburg Community School - January 30, 2026
THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear HCS Families,
Kindergarten registration for the 2026–2027 school year at Hinesburg Community School will open on Monday, February 2, 2026. Champlain Valley School District is encouraging families to register incoming Kindergarten students a little earlier this year to help schools plan carefully and thoughtfully for the year ahead.
If you are a Hinesburg resident with a child who will turn five on or before the CVSD September 1 deadline, we invite you to complete the online registration forms by Friday, February 28, 2026. Registering early helps us plan class sizes, staffing, and spring site visits, and allows us to make each child’s start to school as smooth and welcoming as possible.
Libby Koch is our Kindergarten registration point person and is always happy to help. Whether you have questions, need help getting started, or just want to talk things through, you can reach Libby at (802) 482-6214 or lkoch@cvsdvt.org.
Thank you for helping us prepare for the year ahead by registering early. We are so excited to welcome Hinesburg’s newest learners and their families to HCS. Kindergarten is such a big (and special!) milestone, and we feel lucky to be part of this beginning with you.
Warmly,
Tim and Alexis

ARRIVAL TIME - CARING FOR OUR KIDS AND COMMUNITY
At HCS, we are dedicated to helping every student start their day with calm, connection, and readiness to learn. To make this possible, students are welcome to arrive as early as 7:30 am. From 7:30 to 7:50, they can be dropped off at the side entrance, where they can ease into their morning. At 7:50, it’s time to head to their classrooms and get ready for the day ahead.
To help each child start the day with confidence, we kindly ask that students be inside the building well before 8:00 am. Arriving just a few minutes early not only ensures a smooth start but also helps us avoid last-minute traffic.
Thank you for partnering with us to create a peaceful and caring start for all of our students. If you ever have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to support you!
CVSD INTRA-DISTRICT K-8 SCHOOL CHOICE
Intra-District K-8 School Choice: Children entering grades preK-8 who live in the towns of Charlotte, Hinesburg, Shelburne, St. George and Williston may exercise school choice. Our goal is to both allow options for families and also make balanced class sizes to provide a positive learning environment for all of our children. Processes for intra-district choice of school will be guided by the needs of students, space availability, and existing resources. Given this, we will work to meet as many families’ needs as possible. Guidelines and Application

THE CVSD EARLY EDUCATION LOTTERY IS NOW OPEN FOR 2026-2027!
The CVSD Early Education Program is now accepting applications for a random prekindergarten lottery drawing for the 2026-27 school year. This lottery is for an opportunity to enroll in one of our school-based classrooms which runs 4 partial days per week. Our school-based prekindergarten classrooms are 5 STARs, licensed early education programs that provide play-based, developmentally appropriate environments for all children in an inclusive setting. Our curriculum is based on the Vermont Early Learning Standards (VELS).
Our programs follow the CVSD school calendar. Children who will be age 3 or older by September 1, 2026, who are not eligible for kindergarten, and live in the communities of Charlotte, Hinesburg, Shelburne, St. George, and Williston are eligible to enter the lottery. Families who are selected for the lottery and choose to enroll their child in a CVSD program access their Act 166 publicly funded prekindergarten funds for the school-based program.
All applications must be received by February 5, 2026, and are located on the CVSD Early Education website under PreK Enrollment. Paper applications are available upon request.
For additional information, questions about our program, or any concerns about your child’s development, please visit our website or contact Director of Early Education, Erin Gagne at egagne@cvsdvt.org. Our Early Education team is also available for developmental screenings in the areas of communication, social-emotional development, motor skills, adaptive development, and cognition. More information about an Early Multi-Tiered System of Supports is also available on the website.

LOOKING FOR GIRLS ON THE RUN COACHES!
Girls on the Run Coaches needed at HCS! Ready to help girls speak up with confidence? Through the Spring 2026 Girls on the Run curriculum (GOTR), "Hello, Bold Heart!”, we teach girls how to share their thoughts, feelings, and ideas and help others do the same. Speaking up takes courage, and being a Bold Heart is all about building the confidence to share what’s inside—even when she feels nervous. Use YOUR voice and empower girls in grades 3-5 to speak up like never before by coaching at HCS!
Not a runner? Haven’t coached before? No problem! Girls on the Run VT (GOTRVT) provides training, easy to follow lesson plans, supplies and support for a transformational season. Our season begins the week of March 16, 2026, and ends with a celebratory 5K on Saturday, May 30th. Over the 10 week season our team will meet twice weekly for 90 minute sessions to connect, move, learn and have FUN!
Visit gotrvt.org/coach to learn more or sign up to volunteer. Families can fill out a participant interest form to get connected. Questions? Contact GOTRVT at stephanie@girlsontherunvermont.org, or 802-871-5664.
⛄ WINTER IS HERE - LET'S EMBRACE THE SEASON! ⛄
At HCS, we’re excited to welcome the cold weather with open arms and fresh outdoor adventures! As long as the temperature stays above zero, our students will be heading outside to make the most of the day. To ensure everyone stays warm and comfortable, please make sure your child is bundled up with a cozy coat, hat, gloves, boots, and snow gear. Together, we can create a season full of fun and safety for all. Thank you for helping our community stay cozy and ready for winter fun!

STOP BY THE MID WINTER BOOK SALE SUPPORTING HINESBURG YOUTH PROJECT
WHEN: Saturday • January 31st • 2026
TIME: 9-12
WHERE: Osborne Hall @ United Church of Hinesburg
The Mid-Winter Book Sale supports the Hinesburg Youth Project (HYP), a program that helps young people engage in social issues through education and service. HYP will finish the year with a service trip where youth put compassion into action. Since its founding in 2015, HYP participants have traveled to locations including Boston, Maine, and Puerto Rico to learn about and address issues such as food insecurity, poverty, and disaster relief.
The 2026 trip will take the youth to Washington, D.C. July 26th – August 1st, where they will partner with the Youth Service Opportunities Project (YSOP), a Quaker organization that coordinates youth volunteer experiences nationwide. During their week in the capital, HYP will serve in soup kitchens, work in urban gardens, distribute food to those in need, and reflect daily on their experiences. Each young person will contribute approximately 20 hours of volunteer time during the trip. When the youth are not volunteering, participants will also have the chance to explore the nation’s capital and its many cultural and historical landmarks.
HYP service trips are both an opportunity to serve and to learn. Through hands-on work and reflection, our youth gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing communities and the power of service.
