Part 1
Objective
How does a compass align itself with a magnetic field?
2. Click on the Bar Magnet Tab. You should see a bar magnet and compass on the screen.
- · What color refers to the north pole? ________
- · What color refers to the south pole? ________
- What’s the relationship between the tip of the compass needle and the bar magnet?
- The north pole of the magnet attracts/repels the south pole of the compass.
- The south pole of the magnet attracts/repels the north pole of the compass.
- The interaction between the magnetic poles of the compass and magnet is similar to what prior relationship?
3. Scattered all around the magnet are graphics that look identical to the needle of the compass. Place the compass on top of the several of these graphics. How does the compass’ alignment compare with the graphics?
4. Connecting several compasses with a line beginning at one end of the magnet and ending at the other end would give a picture of what the magnetic field on the exterior of a bar magnet looks like. On the graphic below draw the magnetic field around the exterior of the bar magnet. Your magnetic field lines must obey these rules:
- Magnetic fields lines travel North to South on the exterior of a magnet.
- Magnetic field lines never cross.
- The field strength is proportional to the density of the field lines.
5. Check the “See Inside Magnet” box.
6. What direction are the magnetic field lines traveling in the interior of the magnet?
7. Draw the electric field around two opposite charges on the diagram to the below.
9. How does the length of the compass’ needle always align itself with the magnetic field? parallel or perpendicular
10. Draw the magnetic field between two like poles.
Part 2
Objective
What is the shape of the earth’s magnetic field?
2. Label geographic north and south on the picture of the earth below.
4. Label magnetic north and south on the picture of the earth to the right. Magnetic north is defined as direction toward which the north-seeking arrow of a compass points and the converse for magnetic south.
5. The Law of Poles states
- opposite poles attract/repel
- like poles attract/repel
7. Draw a pair of magnetic field lines. One on each side of the earth.
8. Where is the north pole of the “earth’s bar magnet” located? _____________________________
9. Where is the south pole of the “earth’s bar magnet” located? _____________________________
Part 3
Objective
What is the shape of the magnetic field around a current-carrying wire?
2. What direction is the current flowing? up or down
3. What direction are the electrons flowing? up or down
4. Place the cursor on the base of the compass and click and hold. Observe the deflection of the compass’ needle as you move the compass around the wire.
5. What is the compass needle’s orientation to the wire? parallel or perpendicular
6. Imagine you could hover directly above the end of the wire. What direction is the current flowing in the wire? Let an ´ represent away from you and a · represent towards you.
7. An end view of the taped wire is drawn below. Place an X or 'dot' on the center of the wire to represent the direction of the current..
9. Draw two arrows on the magnetic field line to indicate which way the magnetic field is circulating.
10. The magnetic field about a current-carrying wire weakens as the distance from the wire increases and is given by the equation to the right. Draw two additional magnetic field lines about the wire. Remember the rules for drawing field lines.
