The Daily Drive The Daily Drive

At WIVA Middle School, we're once again kicking off the year with a clear, student-friendly routine called The Daily Drive. It outlines the top habits students need each day to stay on track and grow as independent learners in our virtual environment.

As a parent or Learning Coach, your support makes a big difference! A quick daily check-in—asking if they've logged in, read emails, or made progress—can go a long way. Weekly habits like checking grades together or reviewing goals help reinforce consistency and connection.

Let’s work together to make this a year of growth, confidence, and success for your student!

Student Voice in Action: The MS Student Leadership League Student Voice in Action: The MS Student Leadership League

At WIVA Middle School, we believe student voice matters. That’s why we’re excited to continue the Student Leadership League (SLL)—a program that empowers students to speak up, solve problems, and take an active role in shaping our school culture.

Each homeroom will have student representatives who meet monthly with school leaders to share ideas, discuss concerns, and help lead positive change. With a focus on leadership, communication, and teamwork, the SLL gives students a real seat at the table.

Parents, if your child is interested in leadership or simply wants to make a difference, encourage them to consider joining! Nominations open in September.

Courses, Courses, Read All About It Courses, Courses, Read All About It

What courses will my student be taking?

LEAP- English, Math, Earth Science, History

Additionally all students will have Physical Education and Health that will be completely asynchronous.

MS Schedule MS Schedule

Below is a sample schedule. Depending on student's grade level, courses, and academic needs it may look different for your student. In general students will have their core subjects taught live up to 4 times a week and homeroom. Other asynchronous time should be used for lesson/work completion, meeting with teachers if necessary, or working on asynchronous courses. As you can see below we do a 15 minute break between our morning and afternoon classes because we know that those middle school bodies need to move. As an LC you can help by ensuring they are up, moving, and away from their screens for a bit. This also help them focus more in their next class.

What happens during class?

Instruction, collaboration, and practice.

Instruction - teachers will use time to introduce topics, vocabulary, and model inquiry into big ideas

Collaboration - students will get to practice their collaboration skills working with the whole class or in breakout groups. Collaborating with others is a skill that takes time to learn and needs practice. Many work places still have online meetings, this is a great step in getting students ready for their futures.

Practice - especially for classes that meet 4 times a week, part of the time in class will be to work on homework and practice the objectives from class. This way the teacher is there if your student is stuck or has questions.

What happens in homeroom?

- Important information about being in the WIVA Middle School Community

- Social Emotional Learning

- Connecting with classmates

- Vision of a Graduate focus area discussions

- Reading time! That's right, students will have time during homeroom to read a book of their choosing. This can be a book from home, your local library, or some of our online options. While students are reading, teachers will be checking in 1:1 with students who may need to connect for a variety of reasons.

At the end of last year, our outgoing principal hosted a session all about middle school programming for incoming 6th graders. If you are returning and already viewed this, then no need to view it again. If you are new, check it out: https://youtu.be/oBCj4T4AxWk

Did you know?

Did you know that handwriting uses a different part of the brain than typing? While students can take notes in a word document, they may benefit from completing hand written notes to help store information in their short term and convert to long term memory.

How do we grade? How do we grade?

The best way for LCs to check students grades during the semester is by going into each course and clicking on 'Grades'. The meaning of M, 1, 2, 3, and 4 are the same on their end of semester report cards. Check the video for more information. M's mean that the student's work is missing. Help your student make a to do list to get in any missing work. Students should be re-doing any work that receives a 1 or 2.
