CELEBRATING CENTENNIAL CELEBRATING CENTENNIAL

This past school year, Centennial School District achieved or exceeded 100% of the Pennsylvania Value-Added Assessment System (PVAAS) growth targets for the first time since comprehensive tracking began in 2013. This milestone marks an unprecedented achievement in the district's commitment to educational excellence.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Important Updates on Potential Federal Changes & the Potential Impacts on Our School District

Dear CSD Community,

First, I want to express my sincere gratitude for your ongoing support of the Centennial School District. Together, we’ve made tremendous progress, and I’m proud of the accomplishments we’ve achieved during my tenure as Superintendent, including:

  • Exceptional academic growth, with 100% of PVAAS growth measures meeting or exceeding standards this past school year.

  • A 10.6% increase in overall PSSA scores (ELA, Math, Science) from 2021 to 2024.

  • Building innovative higher education partnerships, such as merit-based scholarships and expanded dual-enrollment opportunities for our students.

  • Securing a Moody’s Aa2 bond rating, saving our taxpayers over $4 million through refinancing.

When I first joined the District, we were facing significant challenges, and as I approach the end of my five years with CSD, we are once again confronted with potential challenges. I want to keep you informed about potential changes at the federal level that could impact our district. By staying informed, we can work together to ensure the ongoing success of our students.

Potential Funding Impacts:

  • We are closely monitoring potential changes to federal funding, particularly for programs like Title I and special education. These programs provide critical resources for underserved students and those with disabilities.

  • Any reduction in funding may require difficult decisions regarding staffing, programs, and resource allocation. We are committed to exploring all possible options to minimize any negative impact on our students’ education.

Potential Policy Changes:

  • We are also monitoring potential changes within the Department of Education that could affect education standards and civil rights protections. We remain dedicated to maintaining high standards and creating a safe, inclusive learning environment for all students, no matter what happens at the federal level.

  • We are tracking ongoing discussions about school voucher programs. Changes to the way public funds are distributed could affect our district’s ability to maintain current services.

  • With the increasing use of digital technologies in education, cybersecurity is becoming even more crucial. We will continue to prioritize the protection of student data and the security of our online learning environments.

Our Commitment:

  • Our priority remains providing the highest quality education for all students. I am actively engaging with state and local officials to understand the potential implications of these changes and to advocate for the needs of our students.

  • We are committed to transparency and will keep you informed with regular updates as new information becomes available.

  • We will continue to recommend sound budgetary practices to the Board of School Directors to meet both short-term and long-term needs.

What You Can Do:

  • Stay informed about developments in education policy.

  • Participate in School Board meetings and community forums.

  • Support our schools by volunteering and advocating for our students.

We value your partnership in ensuring the success of our schools.

Sincerely,

Dana T. Bedden, Ed.D., CAA
Superintendent of Schools

Message from the Acting Secretary of Education, PA Department of Education Message from the Acting Secretary of Education, PA Department of Education

The following message was sent to ALL PA Chief School Administrators

Dear Chief School Administrator,

I want to inform you about a significant announcement at the federal level that may affect our educational landscape. The U.S. Department of Education (USDE) has announced a reduction in force that will decrease its workforce by nearly 50%, reducing staff from 4,133 to approximately 2,183 employees (read the press release here). The reduction in force is scheduled to begin on March 21, 2025, and will impact all divisions within the department.

Despite these reductions, the USDE has stated it will continue to fulfill its statutory obligations, including:

  • Disbursing formula funding
  • Managing student loans
  • Administering Pell Grants
  • Supporting special education funding
  • Overseeing competitive grant programs

While the full extent of these changes remains uncertain, the significant decrease in personnel raises concerns about potential delays or disruptions in these services.

Moving forward, your awareness of how federal funds are allocated and utilized within your local schools will be critical in preparing for and responding to any disruptions. Your insights into how these funds support your schools will play a key role in determining next steps once the impacts of federal changes become clear.

Understanding that our schools have significant reliance on federal dollars and program administration, the Pennsylvania Department of Education is actively monitoring the situation and assessing the potential impact on our state's schools. We are also working closely with the Governor’s Office during this period of review. Today, Governor Josh Shapiro said in an interview with WILK Radio, “When it comes to the [United States] Department of Education, understand the function in practical terms that they play for the state… [and for] school districts that really rely on this federal funding. That's a real problem… [there would be] an immediate negative impact if they shut down the Department of Education and shut down its mission, and we're going to do everything we can to try and make sure that our school districts aren't hurt.”

Please know that I am committed to providing you with timely updates and guidance as more information becomes available.

Please also know that regardless of changes taking place at the federal level, the Pennsylvania Department of Education remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting public education and educators across Pennsylvania. Our team will continue to do everything in our power to support Pennsylvania schools and educators and ensure that you can focus on the critical work you do in our classrooms every day to create opportunity for Pennsylvania students and set them on the path to success.

Thank you for your continued dedication to providing quality education to all students in Pennsylvania.

With gratitude,

Carrie Rowe, Ed.D.

Acting Secretary of Education

No School for Students on May 20, 2025 (Originally a Snow make Up Day)

Dear CSD Community,

As you know, May 20th was originally scheduled as a snow make-up day on this year’s calendar. This was intended to make up for the traditional snow day we had on January 6th, when all schools and offices were closed.

After reviewing the district’s calendar and the state’s requirements for student days and hours, we’ve determined that CSD students will meet the necessary state requirements without needing to use the May 20th snow make-up day.

However, in order to comply with their employment agreements, teachers and select support staff will still be required to make up the day.

What does this mean? Students will not report to school on May 20, 2025. Teachers and certain support staff will participate in a professional development day instead.

Sincerely,

Dana T. Bedden, Ed.D., CAA
Superintendent of Schools

Round Up to Support Feeding School Kids

Centennial's Food & Nutrition Department is again partnering with GIANT Food Stores to help support our students facing food insecurity. We encourage the greater community to participate in this effort.

From January 1 through March 31, everyone who shops at GIANT in Warminster or Upper Southampton will be invited to "round-up" at the register and donate the round-up amount of their bill to support Feeding School Kids. Customers can also give by converting their CHOICE Rewards Points to donations in the GIANT app or purchasing a reusable bag.

We ask our school community to help spread the word about the Feeding School Kids 2025 Campaign to ensure its success. Our goal is to support the children in our district who need the most help accessing nutritious meals and snacks. From backpacks with weekend food to clearing lunch debt to building a community pantry in our schools, the funds will be provided directly to our district's food organization for use, at our discretion, to address food insecurity in our school community.

Please join us in supporting and advocating for this initiative to help ensure no child in our district experiences hunger at school or home.
