Unite! partners with GFWC
April is “Child Abuse Prevention Month” and General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Camas-Washougal (GFWC) has a list of events that they will be participating in. GFWC will be planting pinwheel gardens in Camas and Washougal. Both Cities of Camas and Washougal have signed proclamations to help raise awareness about child abuse prevention.
“This is such an important issue that I feel passionate about raising awareness and getting the word out to our communities.” said Susan Bennett, Vice President of the GFWC Camas-Washougal. “We want families to know that there are resources and places to find help. We want families to feel supported in the important work of raising their children,” added Christine Kamps, President of GFWC.
Bennett serves as the Pinwheel Projects Committee Chair. In an effort to increase the reach and impact of the project this year, she reached out to Unite! Washougal Community Coalition to partner on this project and invited Unite! to plant gardens with the GFWC. “I was so excited to partner with the GFWC on this project!” said Ann Stevens, Unite! Washougal 501c3 President. “GFWC is such a hardworking and dedicated organization that really contributes to the good of our communities! In addition, improving the health and wellness of our youth, families and community is the core mission of Unite!, so this is a perfect project to partner together.”
GFWC, a 501c3 organization, has been serving the cities of Camas and Washougal since 1947. The General Federation of Women’s Clubs is one of the world’s oldest and largest women’s volunteer service organizations. GFWC is a vibrant and connected sisterhood of women who are creating better communities, expanding their own possibilities, and extending friendship and support to women near and far.
Unite! Washougal Community Coalition is a substance misuse prevention coalition that works with all sectors of the community to increase community connections and promote health and wellness. “We are always looking for community partners that want to promote connection, health and wellness in our community, remarked Angela Hancock, Unite! Vice President. “We also have other resources for parents and our community including parenting classes such as Incredible Years, and our semi-annual Drug Take Back on April 24th from 10 am to 2 pm.”
Both organizations are seeking new members who want to volunteer, learn new skills and serve their communities. For more information and resources to help prevent child abuse visit: https://www.childwelfare.gov/topics/preventing/preventionmonth/resources/resource-guide/ For more information about the General Federation of Women’s Clubs please email GFWC Camas-Washougal at GFWC_CW@Frontier.com, contact Susan Bennet at (916) 330-7932 or visit their Facebook page GFWC Camas-Washougal.

Washougal Youth win scholarship for the WA State Virtual Spring Youth Forum!
About the Washington State Spring Youth Forum
The goal of the Spring Youth Forum is to recognize and reward youth prevention teams that have implemented a successful prevention project within their communities. The Spring Youth Forum is the follow-up conference to the Prevention Summit. The Forum provides youth prevention teams the opportunity to learn from others while showcasing their own education and planning skills. Youth Teams share successes and lessons learned from projects commenced during or following the previous Prevention Summits or other youth trainings. The Prevention Summit and the Spring Youth Forum work in tandem to create momentum and help to encourage, reward and support youth-led prevention work in communities throughout Washington.
This year, Youth Teams will showcase their completed prevention projects by developing a presentation video that will be displayed during virtual breakout sessions at the Spring Youth Forum. Keep monitoring our Unite! Facebook Page for updates on our youth's progress.

Sources of Strength Continues to Grow
Our Washougal High School Sources of Strength team continues to learn and grow as they implement the new, evidence based, mental wellness program at the high school.
Over the last few months our team of nearly 30 Peer Leaders and Adult Advisors have been working on several activities in a campaign called #WhatHelpsUsWHS, that focus on ways we can turn to the strengths in our lives, (like good friends, family, mentors, physical activity and more) when we feel Big Emotions like anxiety, anger, and/or stress. Our team created wellness plans for students and staff members, Sources of Strength messages and announcements that will start to be included in the daily announcements, and have challenged their peers to a photo and video challenge via email and social media to encourage WHS Panthers to share pictures and/or videos of what healthy things help them get through hard times.
Their next campaign will focus on continuing to get the word out to the high school community about Sources of Strength through lunchtime activities, promotional videos and other challenges.

Unite! Washougal Youth partners with local businesses to thank adults in our community
A team of Unite! Washougal Youth and adults have started an ongoing project in partnership with several local businesses in Washougal. Their goal is to thank adults for protecting youth by not providing alcohol to minors (anyone under the age of 21). This positive community norms (PCN) project celebrates the positive by highlighting data from the state Healthy Youth Survey that showed most adults, in Washougal, are not providing or purchasing alcohol for anyone under the age of 21 in our community. Way to go Washougal adults!!!!
So as a way to say "Thank You," our youth placed stickers that shared the good news on alcoholic beverages, cooler doors and business doors at three local locations: 54*40' Beer, Washougal Food Center, and the Washougal River Mercantile. These businesses were happy to support our youth and feel it is an important message to share with adults and will continue to work with our Sticker Project team throughout the year to spread other messages that help protect youth.
Do you have a desire to spread positivity around our community? Consider joining our Positive Community Norms team. Our PCN team meets monthly and we have several different workgroups, with the Sticker Project being one of them, that you could participate in. If you are interested in wanting to help celebrate the positive, please contact our PCN team lead, Betty Gabel at betty.gabel@washougalsd.org

Unite! Washougal's very own Vitali Turloc will be discussing cultural competence
“What’s it like to be an immigrant and experience a major change in life? What barriers are out there to newly arrived refugees? Some say that immigration is compared to losing a loved one. It can be a major traumatic event. Come and learn about Vitali’s experience of moving to the United States that can help you understand the life of international settlers in the Washougal community”
Join us at our April 24th Unite! Washougal Coalition meeting to hear Vitali's story!
