Forensics Trip
Lincoln Park Zoo
Our Science Department has been taking students out on some educational and fun field trips the last few weeks. Mr. Banasiak & Ms. Laplante took Vikings to the Museum of Science & Industry's Evidence Lab to simulate a forensics case with evidence. Students were given a set of evidence (i.e. DNA, shoe prints, hair) and they access to the equipment and techniques used in an actual forensics lab. Our Microbiology students visited Lincoln Park Zoo on Feb. 21 where they met with a zookeeper to discuss how the zoo prevents the transmission of zoonotic diseases between animals and people.
In the Culinary Classroom
This week our students in Mrs. Clark's Advanced Culinary Lab made homemade pasta and sauce as part of their unit on Entrees, which highlights traditional Italian cuisine. Students made pasta dough, let it rest overnight, then flatted and shaped linguine, and created an accompanying Bolognese sauce. Students were extremely fascinated at how easy and fun it was to make homemade pasta! See the technique they used here, and make your own sauce using their recipe below:
Classic Bolognese Sauce
Olive oil — 2 Tbsp.
Carrot, finely chopped — 1 small
Celery stalk, finely chopped — 1 small
Yellow onion, finely chopped — 1 small
Ground beef — 1 lb.
Beef stock — 1/2 cup
Tomato paste — 2 Tbsp.
Tomato puree — 2 cups
Salt — 1 tsp.
Black pepper — 1/2 tsp.
Bay leaves — 1-2
Milk — 1/3 cup
1. Add oil and chopped vegetables to medium saucepan.
2. Sweat/saute on low heat; cover and stir occasionally until onions are translucent.
3. Increase heat to medium then add ground beef. Stir as meat is cooking to break it into pieces. Once browned, turn heat up to high and add beef stock.
4. Cook until liquid has evaporated.
5. Decrease heat to medium/low; add tomato paste, puree, salt, pepper & bay leaves.
6. Gradually add heat; let it simmer for 20-30 min., stirring occasionally.
7. Remove bay leaves; add milk. Heat thoroughly, then serve over pasta.
