English and Language Arts with Mr. Winston

Happy Halloween! I am extending the final deadline for Unit 1’s Literary Analysis Essay to next Tuesday, November 4th. Please check in with your scholars to see where they are in the writing process, ensuring that they are ready to submit a completed final draft in class on Tuesday.

As always, please encourage your scholar to read for at least 20 minutes each night. All students should have a book they are independently reading outside of class.

Library Resources

Please help us with our Battle of the Books Wishlist at Politics and Prose!

This wishlist is to support the Battle of the Books competition and reading initiative at Deal MS for school year 2025-26.

The goal is to purchase 20 copies of the books for the school and encourage families to purchase additional copies for individual use. Battle of the Books is a great way to encourage our students to read award-winning books and test their knowledge in a friendly competition with their peers! We hope to have both a schoolwide competition with teams from each grade competing to determine which students will advance to the district wide competition. You can learn more about the district competition here:

https://dcla.org/DCLA-Battle-of-the-Books

We hope to provide every student at Deal with access to these titles and participate in the Battle of the Books, a schoolwide trivia contest! Please help us support this initiative by purchasing books for the school at the Politics and Prose Alice Deal Book Fair on November 16th or online by using the wishlist link below:

Math with Mx. Gomez

Thank you for a great first quarter, everyone! As a reminder, the second quarter is a fresh start for students, so please encourage them to use this opportunity to stay on top of their assignments as much as possible.

6th Grade Accelerated Math

Next week in Math 6, students will be:

  • Strengthening their understanding of computing decimals

  • Exploring the importance of one as it relates to unit rate

  • Using one measurement to find others

  • Converting from one unit of measure to another

These lessons will help students build a solid foundation for working with rates and ratios by emphasizing how one unit can represent a whole relationship.

7th Grade Math

In Math 7, students will begin lessons focused on:

  • Making scale copies

  • Exploring the size of the scale factor

  • Investigating how scaling affects area

To support these concepts, students will also complete i-Ready lessons that reinforce and deepen their understanding. Please encourage your child to stay on top of their assignments and reach out if they need support.

World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft

What a great week we have had in Geography! We have watched videos and read articles to learn about the experiences of different people within the African diaspora. Next week we will continue this investigation. The notes they are taking this week will become a formative grade that I will collect on Wednesday. They will then take an additional formative in class, on CANVAS. When that is done, I will introduce the summative assessment that we will work on for several days. The summative will be a research project that will be presented through PowerPoint.

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan

Hi Scientists!

This week, students dove into a new unit on rock transformation and the rock cycle. They explored the processes that shape different types of rocks and how they transition between forms. This included a hands-on rock cycle crayon lab, where they creatively illustrated the stages of the rock cycle, and two different rock cycle simulations.

Next week, we will dive into weathering, erosion, and deposition processes with two labs – the Skittles Lab and the Slope and Deposition Lab. Please ensure that your student is wearing washable clothes next week!

Roots!

Students will be introduced to their Term 2 root words and will take Roots Quiz 2.1 this upcoming week. The words are listed below:

Roots 2.1:

  • *cent = 100 (think century, centennial)
  • *kilo = 1,000 (think kilometer, kilogram)
  • hexa = 6 (think hexagon)
  • *octa = 8 (think octagon, octopus)
  • deca = 10 (think decade, decagon)

Notes from MLL Support

I wanted to say a big thank you to families who have contributed to our classroom supplies – sentence strips, sentence strip holders, clipboards, etc. These supplies have made student learning more accessible and efficient. Last week, we reviewed the quizzes and key vocabulary and continued our rotations with HMH and iReady along with teacher-led stations. Next week we will continue with our stations.

Library Corner

Mr. Reichlen has created a new web collection of school and public library links to support the novel lists for independent reading texts from the CommonLit 360 ELA curriculum. Here students can find access points to all of the catalog records for recommended texts that support each of this year's unit themes organized by grade level and unit. Students can checkout and place items on hold. The collection will be updated throughout the school year to provide access to recommended titles as units change.
