Thank you to all who were able to join us for conferences this week. There is one more session, as noted below and there may be some openings remaining.

Wednesday, November 13th - 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM (IN PERSON)

To sign up for conferences, follow this LINK to a Google Sheet where you can view each teacher's individual sign-up links. Please note that you will need to schedule appointments with each individual teacher that you would like to meet with. Next to each teacher's name, you will see three links to sign-up, one for each of the three conference windows. When you click the link, you may need to navigate to the correct date. You can do this easily by clicking the "Jump to the next available date" option, as pictured below.

If a date is showing no availability, that teacher's schedule may be full. Conferences are offered on a first come, first serve basis. If that is the case, you are welcome to reach out individually with any questions or concerns you may have.

Once you schedule your appointment(s), you will receive email confirmations with room locations for in-person appointments and Google Meet links for virtual appointments. These email confirmations will also have instructions should you need to cancel your appointment.

Anchor for Life and Veterans' Day Anchor for Life and Veterans' Day

The students in our Anchored for Life (A4L) group organized a recognition for veterans on Veterans’ Day. Students were invited to submit a name of a veteran in their life (for our military connected students this is one or both of their parents). The Anchor for Life students created a display to honor the veterans in the school. They also designed a field of flags with flags to honor the veterans connected to the students at Northern Burlington. Thank you to the students and their advisors for putting this all together.

Northern Burlington Middle School participates in the Anti-Defamation League’s No Place for Hate Program. Our school has been recognized as a No Place for Hate School the last five years and we are participating again this year. One part of the No Place for Hate Program is that students have the opportunity to sign the No Place for Hate Pledge and we will be doing that during lunches the week of November 12. Participation is optional and there is a brief slide show that we will use to explain the process to students, and the slide show can be found HERE.

Clinical Corner Clinical Corner

November is Military Families Month! Thinking of the many stressors that military families may face, it seemed helpful to include here a breathing technique developed by the Navy Seals that anyone, at any age, can use anywhere. It’s called box breathing and it’s broken into four equal parts, each for a count of four. To touch on it here, one would clear air from the lungs and keep them empty for a count of four, inhale through the nose for a count of four, hold the breath there for four and exhale through your nose for a count of four. It can be helpful to picture the sides of a box when performing it. According to the author of this article, a trained Seal, Mark Divine, reports that it “will make you very alert and grounded, ready for action.” It sounds like it would be good to practice when feeling stressed or scattered, in order to gather your focus.
