Edison Update

October 23, 2026

Edison UpdateOctober 23, 2026
Good Afternoon,

I hope you and your family are enjoying this perfect Fall weather! Please see the reminders below about some upcoming activities and important dates!

1. Trunk or Treat is next Wednesday, October 28th from 5:30-7:30pm! This is always a fun event that we look forward to each year! Students are welcome to wear their costume, but please remember that this is a school event. Students should not bring fake weapons, bloody props, etc. If you are unsure about an item, it's probably best to leave it at home! The book fair will also be open during Trunk or Treat in the library.

2. Friday, October 30th is a half day of school. Dismissal is at 12:20pm. Students can wear their costumes to school and we are going to have an all-school Halloween Parade from 10:30-11:00! Parents are welcome to watch the parade which will go through the school and outside down the sidewalk. Kindergarten is going to lead the parade and each class will join the line. If you plan to come to Edison to watch the parade, please arrive by 10:30 and line up along the sidewalk in front of the school! If you choose to check out your student(s) after the parade, please go to the classroom door or dismissal location to sign them out. Students that are not checked out after the parade will be dismissed at 12:20 as usual!

3. Please see the student arrival/dismissal procedures below! We have a single-lane drop-off loop in front of the school. Please do not park in this lane! Also, students should not be dropped off in the parking lot or street! Thank you for helping make sure all students arrive safely!

4. Parent Connect is the site where you can update contact information, phone numbers, see bus info, report cards, etc. Make sure you write down your password! https://www.wwcsd.net/resources/our-families/parentconnection/

5. We stop early dismissals at 3:30pm. Our district has an "Aim for 8" attendance goal for the year (more info below). Early dismissals can impact student's attendance. Please make a plan so your student can attend school every day when they are healthy!

Have a great weekend,

Bennett Tyler

Student Drop Off

Just a reminder, you can use the drop off line to drop off your student. The student should exit the car from the passenger side and the adult should stay in the car. There is no parking in the drop off line.

Another option is to park in a marked parking space. Then, you can walk your child to the door.

Please DO NOT drive through the parking lot and cut back into the drop off line.

Thank you for your help and for making sure our students arrive safely!

Aim for 8! & WWCSD K-12 Attendance Protocol

Aim for 8

Show Up for Success with 8 Absences or Less

Our Students Need Us. Our Community Can Help.

Right now, more than 50% of students in Wayne-Westland Community Schools are chronically absent, meaning they miss more than 10% of the school year.

We can change that—together.

Aim for 8 is our district-wide call to action to help students miss no more than 8 days of school each year. Every day a student is in school matters. Every lesson, every relationship, every opportunity to learn and grow begins with showing up.

This challenge belongs to all of us. Families, educators, businesses, community organizations, faith leaders, and neighbors each have a role to play in helping students attend school consistently and successfully.

Imagine the impact if every student knew their community was cheering them on. Imagine the opportunities created when more students are present, engaged, and learning every day.

Join the Movement.

Encourage attendance. Celebrate showing up. Support students and families.

Together, we can reduce chronic absenteeism, strengthen our schools, and build a brighter future for every child.

Wayne-Westland Community Schools K-12 Attendance Protocol

  • One (1) absence and every absence thereafter - An automated call will be sent to indicate that the student has missed an attendance period. If a call was made to the school to excuse the absence, this call does not go out.
  • Three (3) absences or equivalent - A teacher will make a phone call to discuss the reason(s) for the absences and seek to support the family in getting the child to school.
  • Six (6) absences or equivalent - An attendance letter is sent to communicate the district’s concern about attendance and highlight the steps in the attendance protocol.
  • Nine (9) absences or equivalent - A meeting will be set up between the family and an administrator or support staff member to discuss attendance barriers and to highlight the urgency of regular attendance.
  • Twelve (12) absences or equivalent - Student’s name and address are submitted to Concentric to conduct a home visit. The school will notify parents of the upcoming visit. The details of that home visit are shared with the school to support the student’s regular attendance in school. The middle and high school students’ names and addresses will also be submitted to Westland Youth Assistance or Wayne Youth Services for enrollment in their programming. The second attendance letter is also mailed home at this time.
  • Fifteen (15) absences or equivalent - Final attendance letter is sent home.
  • Eighteen (18) absences or equivalent - Student is referred to Wayne County through formal petition for chronic absenteeism.

Transportation/Bus Information Transportation/Bus Information

Bus Route information is available in Parent Connect. You can view the route number as well as pick up/drop off times.

You can contact the WWCSD Transportation Department at 734-419-2150.

If you'd like to download the "Here Comes the Bus App" so you can track the bus, here is the link with directions: https://www.wwcsd.net/resources/our-families/here-comes-the-bus-app/

Student Check out

Please bring your ID with you to the office when checking out your child. Just a reminder, only adults listed as emergency contacts will be allowed to check out a student.

Student Dismissal Reminders

Students who ride the bus home are dismissed to the gym and walked out to the bus by an adult.

Students who attend Champions or Bright Futures are dismissed to those programs in the building.

All other students are picked up by a parent/guardian from the classroom. Each teacher has communicated a dismissal location.

If there is a change for your child at the end of the day, please communicate this change to the teacher via Dojo and with the office by 2:30pm. This will give us plenty of time to alert the student and teacher (or guest teacher).

We will not dismiss students after 3:30pm unless it is an emergency.

Late Pick Ups

Please have a plan to pick up your student at 4:00pm each day. Having someone here on time is the easiest way to keep our students safe and have a smooth end of the day!

If you are running late, please contact the main office at 734-419-2600 to let us know you are on the way and when you hope to arrive. When students are not picked up by 4:05, office staff begin contacting emergency contacts to make sure someone is coming to the school.

If you need after-school care, consider enrolling in the Champions Program (info listed below). You can set a schedule for certain days of the week or enroll as a drop-in student. The program is very affordable and scholarships are available.

Another option is to consider is bus transportation. You can have your child take the bus to a Wayne-Westland bus stop in the Edison area and pick up your student at the stop. This is an option even if you don't live in that area. That might allow extra time to get to the stop after our 4:00 dismissal.

If late pick ups continue to be a problem, the Principal, Director of Student Services, or School Resource Officer will reach out to discuss options and how the school can support you to pick up your student(s) on time!

Please Keep Your Child Home for 24 hours if they are sent home sick from school!

If your child is sick (fever, throwing up, diarrhea, etc) please keep them home until they are fever free and have no symptoms for at least 24 hours. For example, if your child throws up at school on Monday, they should not return on Tuesday. Please monitor them on Tuesday and make sure they are symptom free for 24 hours before returning (Wednesday at the earliest). Thank you for keeping everyone healthy!
