Dear Rock View Families,

Roadrunner families, I hope this cold weather and snow find you warm and in a safe place. The sleet and ice have definitely taken this Florida girl by surprise, but I will take preparing for a snowstorm over a hurricane any day! I hope our students are able to take this time to rest and read, and we look forward to being back together soon.

The message below was sent to all families to announce our Code RED status

CODE RED – All MCPS schools and offices are closed Monday, January 26, AND Tuesday, January 27

As you might expect…It’s A Snow Day (two of them)! Check out this fun video to announce our status.

Given current inclement weather conditions and the time expected to complete snow and ice removal, MCPS is operating under CODE RED for Monday, January 26 AND Tuesday, January 27.

  • All schools and offices are closed on Monday, January 26 AND Tuesday, January 27
  • Emergency personnel report as directed
  • All activities, field trips, and programs in schools and on school grounds are canceled, including athletic practices and events
  • All childcare programs and community use activities are canceled
  • Staff training scheduled for Monday and/or Tuesday will be canceled or rescheduled for a later date
  • Information about grading deadlines and grade reporting will be shared later this week

We will provide an update for Wednesday’s operational status on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Warmly,

Kilsys Batista, Principal

Attendance Matters Attendance Matters

I want to share an update regarding student attendance. We are continuing to work on reducing chronic absenteeism across all grade levels, as lower percentages reflect stronger attendance.

As of today, 21.74% of our students are identified as Chronically Absent, which reflects an increase of 1.84% compared to last year and an increase of 1.25% from last week.

Chronically Absent % As January 22nd

Kindergarten- 32.93% (up 3.66)

1st Grade- 25.51% (no change)

2nd Grade- 20.19% (up 1.17)

3rd Grade- 20.75% (up .95)

4th Grade-12.22% (up 1.11)

5th Grade-15.31% (up 1.03)

SATISFACTORY: 9 or fewer absences during the school year.

Best chance to develop essential grade-level skills for success now and in the future.

CAUTION / WARNING: 10–17 days absent during the school year.

In danger of falling behind and not developing essential grade-level skills.

CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM: 18 or more days absent during the school year.

Missing critical instruction time and at the greatest risk of falling behind and/or dropping out of school.

Every day of school matters.

Partnering Together to Support a Positive and Safe School Environment

One of the things that makes Rock View such a special place is our shared commitment to creating a positive, safe, and supportive school environment for every student. When families and school staff work together, students feel more confident, connected, and ready to learn. We encourage you to take a few moments this week to talk with your child about how they can help contribute to a positive school community and how to ask for help when needed.

At school, students are encouraged to speak up by:

  • Talking to a trusted adult (teacher, support staff, or administrator)

  • Speaking with one of our school counselors

  • Letting an adult know if something feels unsafe or concerning

  • Asking for help for themselves or for a friend

When concerns are shared, our staff responds promptly and thoughtfully, with a focus on student well-being, learning, and clear communication with families. Thank you for your continued partnership in helping Rock View remain a welcoming and supportive place for all.

Happy New Year Rock View families! To kick of character education in 2026, we will be working on cooperation. This means we will be helping students learn how to work respectfully with others in order to achieve a shared goal. There are always opportunities to practice cooperation at school, at home, and anywhere else your child might go throughout their day. We hope you will do your best to make sure your child is at school every day so they can learn about cooperation alongside their peers.

Volunteer Information Volunteer Information

Volunteers Make a Difference
MCPS welcomes volunteers! Our schools are stronger because parents, caregivers, and community members step in to help. Whether it’s chaperoning a trip, coaching, or lending a hand in the classroom, volunteers make a real difference for kids. At the same time, nothing matters more than keeping every child safe. That’s why we require all volunteers to complete the required training—and some volunteers must also complete a fingerprinted background check, including:

  • Volunteer coaches

  • Grade 6 Outdoor Education

  • Overnight or extended day field trip chaperones (returning after 7:00 p.m. or out-of-area/state)

  • Volunteers working 1:1 with students unsupervised

Stay Connected to Your Student’s Learning
As we approach the end of the marking period, a critical part of student success is two-way communication between school and home.
There are several ways to receive communication on student performance:

  • Report cards, issued at the end of each marking period.

  • Interim reports, issued between the fourth and sixth weeks of the marking period.

  • Teacher phone calls and emails.

  • Parent/Caregiver–Teacher conferences.

The best way to stay informed on grades, assignments and teacher feedback is through ParentVUE.

Summer School: More Opportunities, More Access, More Support
Changes are coming to this year’s
summer school programs. MCPS will implement a four-day week (8 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Monday–Thursday) to provide consistency for families, maximize instructional time and allow Friday for planning, professional learning, curriculum setup and transportation adjustments. Read more.

Now You Know: End of Second Quarter — Check Your Progress
The second marking period wraps up on Friday, Jan. 23, so now is a great time for students to check in on their progress. It’s important that students complete their work on time; late work will not be accepted during the final week of the marking period.
