What a great first day at Washington Woods!

This morning, our building was full of new beginnings—new classrooms, new routines, new friendships, and lots of opportunities to learn what it means to do things The Woods Way. Students and staff have spent time building new communities, getting comfortable with routines, and learning more about how we can make Washington Woods a place where everyone feels safe, included, and ready to learn.

As we talked with students today, we introduced four big ideas that will guide our work together throughout the year:

🌲 Be Safe

We take care of ourselves and others. We practice regulation and self-discipline so we can make safe choices, manage challenges, and help create an environment where everyone can learn.

🌲 Be Kind

We treat others with care and respect. We practice collaboration, communication, and connection by listening to others, working together, including others, and building positive relationships.

🌲 Be Responsible

We take ownership of our choices, our learning, and our responsibilities. We build independence and adaptability by learning to take initiative, make responsible choices, and adjust when things don't go as planned.

🌲 Grow

We understand that learning takes effort. We develop lifelong learning, problem-solving, and perseverance by embracing challenges, learning from mistakes, and continuing to grow.

Throughout the year, you'll see The Woods Way woven into our classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, playground, and other areas of our school. We will recognize students when we see them demonstrating these skills and making choices that reflect The Woods Way.

Celebrating Students Who Are Showing The Woods Way

One of the ways we will celebrate students is through Showing the Woods Way. When a staff member notices a student going above and beyond to be Safe, Kind, Responsible, or Growing, they may write a Showing the Woods Way recognition. These will be read on our school announcements so we can celebrate students together as a school community. After they are read, the recognition will also be sent home so families can celebrate the student at home!

We want our students to know that we notice the good things they are doing and that their everyday choices make a difference in our school community.

When Students Need a Reminder

Of course, learning expectations is a process, and all students will need reminders and redirection at times. When a student continues to need reminders about a low-level behavior after an adult has provided multiple opportunities to make a different choice, staff may use a Fix It Ticket.

A Fix It Ticket is not meant to be a punishment. It is a way for us to teach, communicate, and keep families in the loop when a student has needed additional support with an expectation. For these lower-level situations, the ticket will come home for a parent/guardian signature after the student has had opportunities to correct the behavior.

If a Fix It Ticket does not come back signed, we will work with the student the following day to make a quick phone call home. Our goal is simply to make sure families are aware and have the opportunity to partner with us in supporting their child.

Our goal is always to help students recognize what happened, understand the expectation, and know what they can do differently next time. We want home and school to be partners in that process.

Ultimately, The Woods Way is about more than following rules. It is about the kind of community we want to be and the kind of people we want our students to become.

We are off to a wonderful start, and I am so excited to see our Woods community grow together this year!

Thank you for your partnership,

Mrs. Libby Baud

Parent Drop off and Pick up

A few important reminders will help us keep arrival and dismissal safe, efficient, and moving smoothly this year.

🚙 Morning Drop-Off: 7:35-7:48

We have two separate drop-off lines:

Front Circle Drive: Grades K–1 and siblings
Follow the white shamrocks to the Front Circle Drive.

Back Circle Drive: Grades 2–5
Follow the yellow shamrocks to the Back Circle Drive.

Please note the change to the Front Circle Drive route this year!
Be sure to check the map below so you know which route to follow.

A few tips for a smooth morning drop-off:

  • Have your child ready to get out of the car quickly, with all belongings packed and ready to go.
  • Students should exit the vehicle on the curb side.
  • For everyone's safety and to keep the line moving, parents should remain in their vehicles.
  • We will have adults outside to help students get out of the car when needed.

Important: The doors at Front Circle Drive and gate to the Back Circle Drive will close at 7:48 a.m. If you arrive after the doors or gate has closed, please park and walk your child to the office. (Anytime you are bringing your child in late, you need to walk them to the office to sign them in)

🚙 Parent Pick-Up

Front Circle Drive- Kindergarten- 1st grade (and siblings)

Back Circle Drive- Grades 2-5

This year, students will be dismissed from their classrooms at 2:35 p.m. Teachers will take attendance and begin sending students to their cars once they have been accounted for.

We are also excited to be using the Fast Lane feature through School Dismissal Manager this year. When you arrive in the pick-up line, you will scan the QR code provided. This allows us to see which students are in the cars waiting and send children out in the order of the cars in line.

FastLane Parent Check-in Method

QR Code: We will be utilizing FastLane during our afternoon dismissals. You will be asked a series of questions when creating a FastLane dismissal. Select the Any Parent of… option, unless it is necessary to be specific, so that no matter which parent shows up their PIN number will be valid for pick-up. To scan the QR Code at the check-in point, make sure the SDM app has been given access to your phone’s camera before the first day of FastLane check-in. Click the blue Scan QR code button and follow the on-screen instructions to check-in. FastLane will begin on August 17, so be sure your child’s default dismissal is correct before this date.

Thank you for helping us make arrival and dismissal safe, organized, and as smooth as possible for our students and families!

Cell phone and Wireless Communication devices

Senate Enrolled Act 78 took effect on July 1 and prohibits students from using or accessing personal wireless communication devices while at school. This includes cell phones, smartwatches, and other personal communication devices. If your child brings a cell phone, watch, or other communication device to school, it will need to remain in their backpack and out of use during the school day. You can find more information here.
