Important Reminder- School of Choice Forms

January 28th the district emailed out letters regarding School of Choice forms. Please remember that if you plan on staying at the same school, you do not need to do anything else.

However, if your family has recently moved and needs to attend your new home building next year due to transportation needs, this is the form you will need to fill out. Remember all school transfers are subject to approval and could be restricted based on space availability.

These forms can be completed through the Powerschool Portal. If you encounter any difficulties, please feel free to call the office, and we will be happy to assist you.

Report Cards, School Improvement Plans (SIPS) & Fastbridge Family Reports

-Report Cards were emailed out last week. If you did not receive yours please email me. (rosecransje@kalamazoopublicschools.net)

-SIPS & Fastbridge Reports should be coming home in your child's classroom folder either last Friday or the beginning of this week. If your child does not bring their's home please email your child's teacher.

Attendance Matters- While Supporting our Health

Attendance makes a huge difference in the learning of our students and we know it's important to stay home when you are sick. Below is a chart to help make decisions about staying home due to illness.

Also, these listed reasons are allowed to be marked as an excused absence (EA):

  • Student illness and/or appointment verified by the parent/guardian or medical professional.

  • Medically verified extended illness or hospitalization.

  • Attending a funeral.

  • Religious holiday.

  • Absence due to a subpoenaed court appearance.

  • Any time missed due to KPS school transportation issues.

After 3 consecutive absences, a medical note from a physician is needed to be marked excused.

Unexcused attendance letters are automatically generated based on 3, 5, 10, 15 days of unexcused absences. If an absence does not fall in the above excused category you will automatically get an email even if you call.

Chronic absent letters are automatically generated based on a culmination of unexcused and excused absences that could lead to missing more than 18 school days in a school year; as the state of Michigan outlines this as the chronic absence threshold. Our recommendation is to use these letters to monitor and keep track of how many absences your child has so far this year. It can be useful when deciding/planning absences if they are outside of the illness chart below.

Thank you and please reach out to our team if you need any attendance support!
