October Newsletter for S-RC Elementary School Families

HuskyHeadlinesOctober Newsletter for S-RC Elementary SchoolFamilies
Hello Jr. Husky families! Can you believe that we have already finished our Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences? If you were unable to meet with your child(ren)'s teacher(s) - please make it a point to stop in at some point and chat for a couple of minutes to hear about what has been happening throughout the first SEVEN weeks of school!

Also, please make sure that you are continuing to talk to your child(ren) each night about what they are learning to help reinforce the concepts. If practice opportunities/homework is sent home, please make sure to talk to your child(ren) and see if they need help understanding anything. If they do need help, contact their teacher. The earlier we can identify a misunderstanding, the better off we all are!

Teachers are always here by 8:00 each morning, so if your child does need help with something - come on in!! Let's make sure that we are all on the same page and doing everything we can to make sure every single student is getting what they need to be successful!

Drop-Off & Pick-Up

Please remember safety is important at school, especially during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times. If you choose to park your vehicle in a parking spot, please walk with your child through the parking lot.

Pulling up to the curb next to the South Gym will allow your child to get out of the vehicle on the passenger side without the worry of additional traffic. If you choose this option, we ask that you do not get out of your vehicle as this is our 'drop and go' lane.

When picking your child up, if you choose to park, please exit your vehicle and meet your child by the door to walk them to the car. You can also pull up to the curb for your child to get into the vehicle on the passenger side. If you are waiting for your child to come out of the building, please pull up as far as possible to allow other parents to utilize the curb pick-up process as well. If you are utilizing the 'pull through lane,' please always make sure that busses have enough room to maneuver at all times. Busses can not be blocked in as this is a safety issues.

NOTE: We have had vehicles reported to us as speeding through the parking lot. These vehicles have also been reported to local law enforcement. Please know that the safety of our students is our utmost concern. We ask that you keep the safety of our students in mind at all times, and drive slowly as you drop your child(ren) off or pick them up from school. Thank you for your assistance!

๐Ÿพ Getting To Know You! ๐Ÿพ ๐Ÿพ Getting To Know You! ๐Ÿพ

We are BACK to W.I.N. Time!!!

You may have heard your child come home talking about W.I.N. Time. W.I.N. stands for What I Need. During this last 15-20 minutes of the school day, students are split into groups based on what they know and what they are ready to learn. Students are not grouped by grade level, or to specific grade level teachers. We use MAP Growth Data and group students based on their level within certain content areas. We are currently focusing school-wide on vocabulary.

The cool, and exciting thing for students is that they are able to spend their W.I.N. Time getting the enrichment or extension opportunities that are truly geared toward THEM! It's been great to see the excitement in the hallways as teachers welcome new students into their classrooms and ALL students rotate around the building.

Each W.I.N Time rotation will last three weeks. Over the past week we have been focused on vocabulary. Some examples of skills that students may be focused on in certain grade levels are:

Lower Elementary Level

  • Uses context to determine the meaning of a word
  • Uses context to determine the meaning of idioms
  • Understands how the prefix dis-, mis-, or non- changes the meaning of a word

Upper Elementary Level

  • Interprets personification in context
  • Analyzes the effect of imagery in context
  • Uses context to determine connotation of words

You should definitely ask your child who they have been able to work with recently - AND what they have been able to learn!

We will move to new groups for MATH W.I.N. Time on October 10th!

Parents Visiting for Lunch

  2. Check in at the front office and get a visitors badge to wear for the duration of your visit.

Please also understand that parent visits for lunch are restricted to the lunchroom only. Parents can not accompany their child out to recess.

Powerful Parents using PBiS

Throughout the month of September, the biggest "Problem Area" in the elementary area was physical aggression. This could be students who weren't keeping their hands to themselves in line, students who were pushing each other at recess, or students who got in a fight on the bus. All of these incidents would fall under physical aggression.

Here are some intervention ideas that came from a PBIS website:

IXL Superstars

That is amazing!! Did you know that your child could work on IXL at home too? They sure can!! Each week, a new IXL Superstar is named in each grade level. This is the student who has answered the most IXL questions correctly for that grade. Here are our IXL Superstars for September:

Huskies in the Hallway

Our newest addition to the hallways is Huskies in the Hallway! It's a collection of pictures taken by classroom teachers, paras, administration, staff members, and sometimes even students. Pictures are sent to the elementary office and printed each week. They are then hung on our growing wall mural for all to see. Students (and staff) enjoy finding themselves as they walk by each day!
