NEWS FROMWESFrom Interim Principal John Hansen -- March 17, 2020

Letter from the Principal

Dear WES Community,

This week, we begin our extended school dismissal and transition to remote learning. Per the directive from Governor Scott, all Vermont schools will be closed until at least April 6th. Our remote learning plan is to use e-learning platforms (Seesaw for Kids and/or Google Classroom) to deliver materials, instruction, and feedback to students in grades K-6. Obviously, at the early elementary level, parents or older siblings may need to assist younger students.

Below you will find an overview of our remote learning plan, links to scheduling resources for students, and a video overview of Seesaw for Kids (K-2) and Google Classroom (3-6). All teachers are planning on doing a test run on Thursday. Once we are up and running next week, we hope that students will engage in at least two to three hours of school related learning activities (including "recess")!

Over the next few days, we are developing strategies for providing other services to students and families including special education services.

Materials and belongings may be picked up at school on Thursday between noon and 3:00 p.m. Students in grades 3-6 may have a school Chromebook for use at home if needed. Students in grades K-2 may use a school iPad at home if needed. Some students already have school devices at home; for those who still need a device, we are working out the details and should have devices available Thursday afternoon. We are also still looking into internet connectivity for those families who do not have it at this time.

We remain committed to supporting our students and continuing learning during this difficult time. Please remember that this is new for teachers, parents and students; patience and problem solving skills will be required by all of us! Together we will figure things out and move forward with our children's learning.

Sincerely,

John Hansen

Interim Principal

Remote Learning Plan

Teachers will...

  • Develop plans and share them with students through Seesaw or Google Classroom and families through email, primarily on Mondays.

  • Provide learning activities in reading, language arts and math, at first.

  • Regularly check email throughout the day and respond to student and parent questions.

  • Not conduct live teaching. Students will access a learning menu designed by their teachers and complete activities at their own pace.

Student Planning and Scheduling Resources

Eventually, there will be an expectation that students do between 30 and 45 minutes of activities from a menu in each of the following areas each day (total of 2 to 3 hours), but will likely be shorter as we begin this changeover:

  1. Literacy (Reading and Writing)

  2. Math

  3. Physical Activity

  4. Art/Music/Spanish/STEM

Parents can help by writing out a schedule for your children to follow each day. Of course you can be flexible, but children thrive with routine and predictability. Here is a possible sample schedule:
