Señor Campbell
aka Nathan, Spanish Educator, Father, Husband, Son, Brother
NBCT Spanish Teacher, Manheim Central High School
Languages have been the object of my curiosity since as long as I can remember. My mother likes to tell stories of how I would walk around speaking made up languages that I had invented. My wife says that I do that now, but it's usually just my muttering, ha! My passion for languages led me to travel abroad for the first time when I was 13. I spent a month traveling Panama and came back with a burning desire to learn Spanish. I embraced the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world and it was an easy decision for me to choose a career where I get to live and share my passion daily!
Living in Lancaster County, we have access to one of the top schools for world languages studies and for education, Millersville University. I spent four years studying Spanish Education, including time abroad at la Universidad de Salamanca in Spain. Upon graduation, I was hired to teach Spanish at Solanco High School where I spent the first three years of my career. I really enjoyed teaching there and during that time I established the most essential component of my teaching career, my friendship and partnership with Megan Flinchbaugh. The two of us were hired as new teachers in our first year, and together we have collaborated, supported, and challenged each other as we have grown professionally. Even after I left Solanco to come to teach at Manheim Central, we continued to work together closely. One of our greatest accomplishments was cofounding and directing the Association of World Language Educators, providing professional development opportunities to teachers all over Central PA and more.
Returning to Manheim Central in 2008 was like coming home. I graduated from MCHS in 2001 and have been a lifelong resident of the Manheim community. Being at MCHS allows me to give back to my community, promote languages and culture, and work with families that I have known all my life. Working with Frau Campbell, (yes she is my wife) is an opportunity that I wouldn’t trade for anything. While we don’t always agree on everything (who does?) we enjoy sharing ideas and promoting diverse cultural experiences to our learners.
Living in the community where are our children attend the schools where we teach is awesome. We love attending school events, sports games, and cheering you on! While our son is now a freshman in college at Georgetown University, our daughter is entering her first year at the high school.
Education has always been a part of my life, and I continue to learn and discover new things. Since earning my Masters in Spanish Education in 2008, I have taken over twenty graduate courses and earned my National Board Certification in World Languages. Learning is about investigating, discovering, and reflecting on those things that provoke a curiosity within us. There is little that doesn’t fascinate me. Currently, I am studying French on Duolingo. It’s not easy, but I have a goal to at least learn the basics.
Discovery and learning are about taking risks and pursuing your passions. It’s curiosity and the desire to learn that has led Frau and me to take our families and our students abroad each year. I have been to over 25 different countries and I never tire of traveling and learning. Do I have a favorite country? Most likely I will tell you Spain, but Slovenia is a close second. Each place has its own charm and personality, just like inside the classroom.
The past two years have specifically been an incredible time in my career as I have been honored as the 2024 Pennsylvania Language Teacher of the Year, then the 2025 Northeast Conference Teacher of they Year, and finally the 2026 ACTFL National Teacher of the Year. It has been an honor to travel the country and speak with other language educators.
