Rattler News Newsletter for the Week of August 21st, 2023

Welcome Message from Principal Mrs. Chavira Welcome Message from Principal Mrs. Chavira

zoom_out_map

Rattler Community,

We are starting week four and during these past three weeks teachers have been getting to know students. This week Progress Reports will be going out. Progress Reports are used to share any concerns with parents before their final report card. Make sure you review it and reach out to your child's teacher if you have any concerns. Educators have already started reaching out to some of our families to set up a team plan to address any concerns. Every child is different, and we must work as a team to provide support for them as they go through this educational journey. If, you have any concerns that you are seeing on their progress report, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher. Especially if they are new to our campus and we do not have any data to refer back to.

Please take a moment to read our newsletter and see what events are coming up. As a reminder, we are one community, and we must work together to help all of our Rattlers. Continue to be courteous to each other as well as to our staff. This is the type of community we are, and we all need to protect it in order to maintain it.

If you are reading our newsletter on a desktop or laptop, you will notice our table of content feature. This will help you navigate through our email with ease.

Thank you again Rattler Community for your support. Thank you for entrusting TEAMSISD and Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary with your child's education.

Respectfully,

Cristina Sanchez-Chavira

23-24 Spirit Shirts Sale

23-24 Shook Spirit Shirt is now on sale with orders being due end of day September 1st.

Shirts are a bright orange 50/50 cotton t-shirt. Students can wear these shirts on Fridays with jeans. (If they do not have a spirit shirt, they are expected to wear their uniforms.) These shirts are also great for parents to show their Rattler pride at district or campus events as well as when volunteering. Please visit the MySchoolBucks website to sign into your account and select "School Store" to browse all items. There are three icons of the spirit shirt due to the price difference in larger sizes.

YS-AXL = $15
A2X = $17
A3X = $18

It is preferred that parents purchase their shirt through the webstore by the district due to accountability requirements. To pay cash, a parent must visit the front office during the school day to pay with exact change to our Secretary, Mrs. Rose Ross, in order to complete the transaction and receipt process. Students are not allowed to bring cash to the office to complete the process. Mrs. Ross is available Monday-Friday from 8-1 and 2-4 pm. Once received, we are unable to process exchanges.
Shirts will arrive approximately two weeks after sales close.

Bullying vs. Conflict

Students calling each other names and being mean to each other is part of social development in elementary school. Our role as a school is differentiating between bullying and conflict among students.

In grades Kinder through 2nd grade and beginning of 3rd grade. Students are still learning about social boundaries, and we work diligently to teach them the effects of name calling or being mean to ensure they develop a sense of empathy and learn that this is not proper behavior. By the time students reach the end of 3rd grade, 4th and 5th grade, they understand the results of their behavior. Behaviors by a mean girl or boy becomes a kind of social torment that often exists without parents and teachers noticing. This mean behavior may include tactics like backbiting, ostracizing, rumor-spreading, and manipulation, which can cause serious psychological harm to their targets. Even though they are older, our role is still to ensure to teach them proper behavior. If this behavior continues even after intervention, we will follow our student code of conduct to establish consequences such as parent contact, removal of privileges, removal from leadership campus organizations. Note that we do look at the difference between bullying and conflict. Many times, the cause is a conflict between the students, and we can redirect them. Know that we are here to support our Rattlers to help them learn how to make good choices and have tools that will serve them well in middle school and high school. Please take a moment to talk to your children about the difference between bulling and conflict as well as how to be empathetic to other students.

Dismissal Concern

Did you know that from 3:15 when we start our dismissal process, we are done in approx. 15 min? We are fast and efficient, BUT we are noticing some adult behavior that is not supporting our process.

CONCERN OF THE WEEK: Parents running off their vehicle in the middle of the street to run for their child. This is very dangerous. You are placing yourself, your child and our support staff at risk of a motor vehicle accident. If you have noticed, we are ALL hands-on deck and we are doing our best to facilitate traffic to keep everyone safe. Your patience for 15 min is greatly appreciated. We will work with our families, do not hesitate to reach out if our 15 min systems are not effective. We will brainstorm with you and find a solution to your concern.

zoom_out_map

Do you have a balance?

Letters continue to go out for pending balances at the campus level. Please note that any student with any balance (lunch, fundraiser or technology) will not be able to take part in any campus event such as dances. In December we will hold a campus Student Appreciation Event and all balances must be cleared to below $10 by December 1st in order to participate. Please take care of your campus balances. You can see pending lunch balances by logging into my schoolbucks and call the campus and speak to administration or our parent engagement liaison Mrs. Brittany Burnette.

zoom_out_map

Have you filled out your lunch status application?

We have less than 45 students that have not filled out their lunch application. As a reminder, this is required of ALL students regardless of eligibility. Please complete your application if you have not done so already. Thank you for your support.

VSP Soccer and PepSquad are Starting Soon!!

If you missed the VSP meeting, we would like to share with you how you can still sign up. First, do know this program is completely dependent on parent volunteers signing up to coach in order to form teams. There were a handful of parents who did sign up; however, we currently do not have anyone signed up to coach for pep squad or the PK soccer division. More coaches for all divisions are also needed based on the number of students athletes that were registered. or may register after the meeting. Should you be interested in coaching or want more information to decide, please reach out to Mr. Patti our coordinator whose information is below. The campus facilitates the space to hold games and practices but does not run this program.

To sign your child up for pep squad or soccer, you can visit this link below or contact the coordinator. Signing up to play does not guarantee that a team can be formed. Right now, the program is signing up athletes and searching for coaches. After the registration deadline of September 1st, teams will be determined, and coaches will reach out to parents.

When would practices be? Practice schedule is up to the coach in charge.

New Street on Paseo del Suerte

We want to thank our parents that have reached out with their concerns about the new street that has opened up across from our 4th/5th drop-off and pick-up. Lorenz street is bringing added safety concerns with individuals crossing between cars, U-turns, and added traffic to the Paseo de Suerte streets.

As you may have noticed, the administration supports traffic duty. We ask for your support and patience. Our goal is to keep students and families safe as well as to facilitate our drop-off and pick-up process.

Effective Monday, we will be implementing the following traffic safety protocols. Please note that we will be requesting the county to help us with signage.

  • Due to the new street, we will no longer be able to park along Paseo de Suerte on any side. We are running a three-way street, please see the map below to see the traffic flow that supports our dismissal process.
  • Anyone coming out of Lorenz street will have to turn right to drive away from the traffic congestion on Paseo de Suerte and Paseo del Este. See map.

Traffic Flow to support a smooth drop-off/pick-up

Parents, please help us by no longer parking on any part of Paseo de Suerte. Parked vehicles make it difficult to move traffic.
zoom_out_map

Crossing Paseo del Suerte

Parents, we ask that you approach a crosswalk to go up to an administrator to help you cross. Individuals crossing at different locations are an accident waiting to happen. Drivers can not watch, vehicles, traffic control individuals, and pedestrians. Help us keep you and ourselves safe. WAIT until we cross you.
zoom_out_map

Traffic

Student Safety and Community Safety is our priority. It takes a second for an accident to occur and for this reason, we need to make sure that we have a clear mind and are not rushed when we approach our campus.

General

  • Remember to be courteous to all drivers.
  • Please refrain from honking or cutting drivers off. We need to always be courteous to each other. We are part of the same community.
  • We understand that we do not have enough parking for all parents. All schools struggle with parking. Please be aware of where you are driving and who is around you.
  • Always use crosswalks or approach administration or support personnel to cross you. We are our children's roll models. Would you like your child to think it is safe to cross anywhere down a street?

Car Drop-Off Etiquette

Car drop-off must be used by students that are independent enough to exit their vehicles with their backpacks on. Support your parent community by doing the following.

  • Always remain in your vehicle. *If you need to exit your vehicle to help your child, then your option should be to park and walk your child.
  • Always park at the top of the lane, first sign. Please do not stop at the door walkway. This limits the number of kids that can exit the vehicle.
  • Make sure students are ready to exit the vehicle. If your child requires much assistance from you, please park as you are encouraged to not exit your vehicle.

Car-pick-up Etiquette

  • Always display on your DASHBOARD your YELLOW car sign. If you do not have a car sign, please park to pick up your child.
  • Do not exit your vehicle. Always remain in your vehicle. We will bring your child to you.
  • Never park in our pick-up area
  • Do not utilize the exterior or 2nd lane to have kids run to you OR pass the vehicles before you.

In the event you feel a driver or parent is impacting student, please do not engage. Notify administration. We will do the following.

  • The administration will contact the parent and advise them of proper procedures
  • Second or severe offense: Vehicle information will be given to police service.

Thank you, Rattler Community, for your support. Let us make sure we keep our Rattlers safe.

Parent Involvement Parent Involvement

Would you like to be a Parent Volunteer?

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer? While we are still finalizing our date for the informational meeting, you can complete your district background check now through this link. https://my.sisd.net/public_apps/dps-cch-public/#!/home/

Background checks must be done yearly with them being valid from July 1 to June 30 of the current school year.

For our campus, you will not only need to be cleared by the district but also attend one of our orientations that will be held throughout the school year. We will hold these both mornings and evenings to accommodate all parents. These orientations will allow you to learn about the process of coming into the campus and the various opportunities available. More information about these orientations will be shared once finalized.

We would love to have your help!

Procedures for Inclement Weather

What do we do if it is raining during dismissal? In the event of inclement weather, we will share this information with our community through TEXT, EMAIL, and CLASSDOJO.

Decisions for inclement weather are made no later than 2:15 pm for ALL grade levels.

This means that we may call for inclement weather and the weather will immediately clear OR we may not call for inclement weather on time. Note that we use forecasts, radar maps, and national/local advisories to make decisions. Inclement weather can be called in the event of precipitation, low temperatures, or high winds.

2:45 Dismissal

PK and Kinder

  • Students will be picked up in their classrooms. Side doors for arrival will be opened. All parents will have to park and enter the building to pick up their child from their classroom.

3:15 Dismissal: All siblings will report to their younger siblings' classroom

1st -3rd

  • All main building doors will open and parents will come in to pick up their child from the classroom.
4th and 5th grade
  • Students will be in the modular building. Please use your car tags so that we can call students out and they will exit from the modular to car pick up. This process will take a little longer.

Please be patient during this process. Student safety is the priority.

YWCA Afterschool Program

The YWCA Afterschool Program is expanding our capacity here on our campus to help accommodate our families needing after-school care services. Please get in touch with them at 915-519-0000 to learn more about the program including costs, special programs, and required registration.
zoom_out_map

Care for your devices

As a reminder, devices that students receive will be used year after year by them and it is important they take care of their device. All parents sign a device user agreement during registration and devices that are broken beyond repair will have to be replaced by parents or guardians. Continue to monitor student care. Students' devices that show negligence will be picked-up, have to be financially replaced and students run the risk of losing the privilege to take their device home. Help us teach our students how to be responsible and practice device care.

Secure School Sign
zoom_out_map

The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC)

The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) requires schools to schedule and hold drills for different safety protocols. For the next two weeks, students will be learning about the SECURE DRILL.

Secure is called when there is a threat or hazard outside of the school building. Whether it's due to violence or criminal activity in the immediate neighborhood, or a dangerous animal in the playground, Secure uses the security of the physical facility to act as protection.

The Secure Protocol demands bringing students into a secure building, locking all outside access points. Where possible, classroom activities would continue uninterrupted. Classes that were held outside, such as gym class, would return to the building and if possible, continue class inside the building.

Drills

In Texas, Secure drills must be performed at least once per school year. At least one of these drills should be performed while outdoor activities are in progress.

zoom_out_map

Campus and Student Threats are no Joke

Please take the time to talk to your children regarding the consequences that can come from making threats to an individual or campus or through social media. Socorro ISD and Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary, take all campus or student threats very seriously. Incidents that involve students making threats to other students, adults, and/or the school will be handled using the SISD Student Code of Conduct and if necessary may lead to an investigation by our campus SRO.

Please talk to your child about the consequences that come with making threats to others. We appreciate your support.

zoom_out_map

Arriving on time

Systems are working and this week we will begin to work on arriving on time. Students' tardiness will go into effect soon. Note the following

  • Doors and Gates will open at 7:00 am
  • First Bell will ring at 7:30 am
  • MUSIC will play over the intercom at 7:40 for the last 5 minutes before the tardy bell.
  • Tardy Bell will ring at 7:45
  • Breakfast in the classroom will be served from 7:30-7:45 am
  • Instruction will start promptly at 7:45

Thank you, parents, for not blocking our walkways and stopping at the endpoints. This helps us have a visual of the students coming in and support any students that need guidance.
