The ADL Basketball Tournament is almost here. This will be the 53rd year of the event. We begin Wednesday February 19th and finish with the two championship games on Saturday February 22nd. Although this is a basketball tournament, it is so much more of a community event.
Five Chittenden County Schools participate in the four day event which shows off our ADL and Essex Junction Community. Our students volunteer, play, perform, and most importantly are members of our Dawg Pound in the bleachers of the gym. It is truly an event that can’t be explained in words. Although this video gives an overall feeling of the tournament, It is an event that needs to be lived by our students and community. Please check it out, ADL 50th Bball Tournament .
ADL students and community will always play a huge role in the atmosphere of the week. We start off with a pep rally on Wednesday with our student body being highlighted as well as a game between the faculty and our 8th graders. After the pep rally the tournament starts with three games each night. These games are filled with the energy that is the envy of any middle school. Spectators can be seen hanging out near the concession stand, watching the action, and following Stebbs lead with the cheering in the Dawg Pound. The week comes to a conclusion with the championship games on Saturday night. Throughout the week, spectators will be treated to our band in the stands, chorus singing the National Anthem, and our students playing in a variety of games beyond the basketball games.
Before the tournament we sell Dawg Pound tee shirts and advanced tickets. The advanced tickets are only sold to our ADL students, and are good for all four days of the tournament. The advanced ticket price is $10. A single night ticket is $3, and the advanced ticket is $10. The Dawg Pound T- shirts we sell are a great way for our students/community members to show their support for our school. We sell the shirts for $12. To purchase advance tickets or Dawg Pound shirts, please see Mr. Barber before Wednesday the 19th. After this date, same day tickets can be purchased in the gym lobby each night for $3 and the Dawg Pound shirts will be on sale during the tournament. Coming to the tournament is a great way to see our school community at its best. We look forward to seeing you during tournament week. .
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Kevin Barber, kbarber@ewsd.org.
Fleming School Battery Blitz Recycling Round-Up!
When batteries are not recycled properly, they often end up in landfills, where they can release harmful chemicals into the soil and even pose a fire hazard. Did you know throwing batteries in the trash is illegal in Vermont and several other states? Batteries must be handled responsibly to protect our environment.
To raise awareness about proper battery recycling, the fifth graders in Ms. Guntulis's class at Thomas Fleming School are participating in the 'Battery Blitz' Challenge, sponsored by CWSD, Earth Rangers out of Canada, and Call2Recycle.
Collection boxes have been placed at these locations - all in Essex Junction:
- BoxCar Bakery: 11 Park Street
- The Nest Cafe: 17 Main Street
- Firebird Cafe - at Five Corners
- Brownell Library, Lincoln Street
- 5 Corners Variety, 39 Park Street
- Fairground Beverage - 103 Pearl Street
- Thomas Fleming School - Prospect Street
Please drop off your used batteries at any of these locations by February 15th and help us spread the word about responsible recycling!
A special thanks goes out to Jake Tran (Firebird and The Nest Cafe); Duncan Harvey (Fairgrounds Bev & 5 Corners Variety) and MK and Stacey (BoxCar Bakery) and the staff at Brownell Library. The Environment Committee of Essex Rotary is honored to support these students as they learn about environmental impacts and attempt to solve part of this issue.
Please, please take your batteries - both "normal" and rechargeable - to support our enterprising students.
Mrs. Conger donated her old potter's wheel to the art classroom. Students have been learning to throw on it all week. This is such an incredible opportunity for students thanks to her generosity.
Thank you, Mrs. Conger!
