What Has Been Happening In Ms. Viscuso's and Ms. McGuirl's Classrooms?
It has been a great start to the year so far. Keep up the good work!
Cafeteria Reset
We have recently made changes to our cafeteria procedures to promote a safer and more structured environment for all students. Rather than allowing students to choose any seat in the cafeteria, seating is now assigned to half of the cafeteria based on where their next class is located. This allows for smoother transitions and greater supervision.
During each lunch period, multiple staff members—and often our School Resource Officer—are present to monitor and support students. Teachers also escort their classes to and from the cafeteria.
Despite these measures, we continue to see some students struggling to meet our expectations for safe and respectful behavior during lunch. Our cafeteria expectations are as follows:
-
Students are to enter the cafeteria and be seated immediately.
-
Tables are dismissed to the lunch line only when students are seated and calm (one to two tables at a time).
-
After getting lunch, students must return to their assigned seats and remain there for the duration of the period.
-
Students may talk quietly with peers at their table.
-
Students must raise their hand to request a restroom pass; only two students may be in the restroom at a time.
-
At the end of lunch, staff circulate with trash cans so that students can clean their areas before dismissal.
To encourage positive behavior, tables earn points for following expectations—staying seated, using quiet voices, and keeping their area clean. Points can be redeemed at our school store on Fridays, and top tables may also earn the privilege of enjoying lunch in the courtyard.
Unfortunately, all grade levels are currently struggling to consistently meet these expectations, and several incidents have occurred as a result of students not following cafeteria rules. Please take a moment to review these expectations with your child and reinforce the importance of respectful and safe behavior.
Moving forward, students who continue to disregard cafeteria expectations will face more serious consequences, including detentions, loss of privileges, and possible in-school or out-of-school suspension.
We appreciate your continued support in helping us maintain a safe and positive environment for all students.
WIN Reset
We have noticed that students have been having difficulty transitioning safely and efficiently to their WIN (What I Need) period at the end of the day. This period is an important part of our Tier 1 interventions, which provide support for all students. Each day, teachers use this time to focus on specific areas of growth and development:
-
Monday: Lessons on Respect, Ownership, Courage, Kindness, or Safety to support social-emotional learning.
-
Tuesday: Math intervention through our online program, IXL Math.
-
Wednesday: Grade and assignment check-in with teacher support.
-
Thursday: ELA intervention through IXL ELA.
-
Friday: Flexible time for additional intervention, enrichment, or reward/social activities.
These 20 minutes are valuable and are designed to help every student succeed academically and socially.
To make the most of this time, we are adjusting our end-of-day procedures. Beginning Monday, most students will remain in their 9th-period class for WIN, rather than transitioning to another classroom. Our 6th-grade students will be escorted back to their 7th-period teachers for this period. Staff will be available to guide and support students through this change.
We are confident that this small adjustment will help create a calmer end to the school day and allow both students and staff to make the best use of this important time
