MiCareerQuest Southeast is the region's largest interactive career exploration event for high school students. It exposes students to a broad range of exciting, rewarding career opportunities as they prepare for their futures! It will be held on November 17th.

Thousands of high school students from Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, Wayne, Washtenaw and Livingston counties will be meeting with working professionals who have built successful careers in a variety of fields. In addition, young people will have the opportunity to touch, feel and work with the equipment, tools and technology used by people every day in a broad range of in-demand jobs.

The goal is to connect classroom learning with real-world jobs and their requirements. Students also will discover engaging workplace opportunities, such as internships, job shadowing and more.

This field trip will fill up fast. Students should complete and return the parent permission slip and return it to the Counseling Office, Mrs. Mattson, Mr. Muylaert, or Mrs. Lafata. Click on the link below for the permission slip. You can obtain paper copies of the permission slip in the Counseling Office.

HACK THE NEST HACK THE NEST

Dear Students,

Hack The Nest is Eastern Michigan University's first hackathon, running Saturday November 14 through Sunday November 15, 2026 at the EMU Student Center and Halle Library in Ypsilanti. It is student-led, free to attend, and welcomes high-school students interested in building something and trying something new.

Register at hackthenest.tech

A hackathon is a weekend where students build something that solves a real problem. Teams form on site, work together on a project, and present what they made to judges. It has nothing to do with breaking into systems, and no coding background is required.

You do not need to have taken a computer science class. We are running a hardware track alongside the software work, and the teams that do best are rarely the most technical ones. They are the teams that picked a problem worth solving and could explain who it helps and why. First-time attendees are exactly who this event is built for.

  • Saturday, November 14: In person from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. High-school attendees must leave campus by 9 p.m.
  • Saturday night: You can continue working on your project online. High-school attendees do not stay on campus overnight.
  • Sunday, November 15: Return in person at 9 a.m. and attend until 4 p.m. All times are Eastern Time.
  • Where: EMU Student Center (check-in) and Halle Library, Ypsilanti, MI
  • Free to attend, with high-school students welcome from any school, including dual enrollment and early or middle college programs
  • No experience needed
  • Free meals and swag all weekend
  • Come with friends as a team of up to 4, or come on your own and we will help you find teammates
  • Beginner workshops and mentors to help you get started
  • Prizes across multiple tracks
  • Bring a laptop and charger, and follow the high-school attendance instructions provided before the event

High-school registration: First, register at hackthenest.tech. After registering, high-school students will receive a separate form at the email address they used to register. Please complete this form before attending.

Hack The Nest is hosted by Google Developer Group on Campus at EMU. Partners so far include OpenAI, IBM, NASA (through the Michigan Space Grant Consortium), Kawasaki Robotics, Quantum Rings, ElevenLabs, SICK and g.tec, with more joining.

Register at hackthenest.tech. We would love to see you there.

Paying for College Paying for College

You can get ready to file and read about documents you will need here: FAFSA® Application | Federal Student Aid

You can estimate your cost of expected aid here: Federal Student Aid Estimator | Federal Student Aid

The best way to get an idea of college affordability is by using Net Price Calculators. These are available through a simple google search (Michigan State + Net Price Calculator) and can be completed in minutes. Each college and university in the US is federally mandated to offer the NPC for prospective students and families. While these are not exact, they do provide a ballpark of idea of expected aid.

What is the CSS Profile? What is the CSS Profile?

The CSS Profile provides a deeper look at your finances and is required by some colleges. Most colleges don't use it, but seniors should complete it if their college requires it. It is a financial application that provides universities with more financial context. The CSS Profile is required by Adrian, Hillsdale, Olivet, and the University of Michigan if a student is applying for financial aid.

To see what colleges out of state will require the CSS Profile, go here: CSS Profile Participating Institutions and Programs (collegeboard.org). A few more examples: Boston College, Carnegie Mellon, College of the Holy Cross, Drexel, Duquesne, Northwestern, Stetson, Syracuse, University of Miami, Villanova.

Important Reminder: Required FAFSA for Seniors (Waiver available) Important Reminder: Required FAFSA for Seniors (Waiver available)

Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is an important step in helping your student prepare for life after high school. The FAFSA determines eligibility for federal grants, loans, and work-study programs—and colleges and scholarships can use it to award financial aid.

FAFSA Completion Requirement
West Bloomfield School District requires all seniors to complete the FAFSA as part of the graduation requirements. Even if you don’t think your family will qualify for aid, we encourage every family to complete it, as unexpected events can often happen and impact a student’s financial resources. The FAFSA is now open. Be sure you select the 2027-2028 form.'

Completing the FAFSA is also required for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, including the Community College Guarantee program. Learn more here: Michigan Achievement Scholarship.

Opt-Out Option
If you do not plan to complete the FAFSA, you will need to fill out the Class of 2027 FAFSA Opt-Out Form and turn it into the WBHS Counseling Office.

Need Help?
We’re here to support you! Join us for our FAFSA Completion Workshop on November 4th at 6:30 p.m. This will be a virtual meeting and you can enter a private chat to ask your questions. The session will be led by a representative from Oakland University, and the information will apply to any college your student plans to attend. Register here: FAFSA Workshop Registration Link

Thank you for partnering with us to help our students prepare for their next steps!

Create a Balanced list
It is important to do your research and created a balanced list of colleges. If you are applying to several reach schools, it is critical that your list includes likely and target schools. Please also keep in mind that your safety school might be your friend's reach school. Please be cautious of your words. Stay open-minded and chase merit scholarships at schools where your GPA is above their average.

Common Data Set
Every college provides data via the Common Data Set about their previous year's admitted students. This is a great way to understand your chances of admission along with helping you determine whether to send your SAT/ACT scores to a college that is test optional. Simply Google the name of the college + Common Data Set to find this information. Look in Section C. This data quickly helps students understand their chances of admission.
Net price calculator

To get an estimate of your cost of attendance at a college or university, Google the name of the college with the term "Net Price Calculator." Each college has an estimator. This doesn't guarantee your cost of attendance but can be a useful tool.
