Okay! We’re set with new products and excited to see change…but, how do we fit this in and stick with it so it’s a healthy habit…instead of looking at the box on the counter with wishful thinking?!? The most important part of building a new habit is consistency. One great way is to build it is to start doing it directly following a habit you already have. In the book Atomic Habits, by James Clear, he teaches to anchor (attach) a new habit to an existing behavior. This simple step can be life changing. Think about a new behavior that you would like to become a habit - in this case washing your face. Identify which behaviors or activities that you do each morning that have already become built in habits. For example, going to the bathroom, brushing your teeth, taking a shower, or making a cup of tea or coffee, eating your breakfast.

These are examples of morning rituals. Choose one, like brushing your teeth because you are already at the sink (morning and night) and “anchor” washing your face to follow the old!

Skin Microbiome

Did you know that your skin has a Microbiome just like your gut?

Bonus Info: According to a 2010 study published by the British Journal of Dermatology, our epidermis contains a skin microflora of approximately 1000 different bacteria species. The optimal skin pH required to keep this microbiome healthy is around 5.5.

We have a protective layer on our skin called the acid mantle. This protective layer is made up of natural skin oils (lipids) and amino acids from our sweat. This is what keeps the skin’s pH as well as keeping out non-helpful bacteria. It's our first line of defense against the outside world.

Our skincare must respect that balance with nourishment and support without stripping the acid mantle with harsh cleansers or treatments.

Anti-Oxidants for the Skin Anti-Oxidants for the Skin

When looking at solutions, skin care ingredients are often antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, peptides, etc. Let’s take a peek at why:

Antioxidants may improve the skin by…

•reducing DNA damage from UV light improving hydration

•stimulating the production of collagen and elastin

•reducing the appearance of wrinkles and pigmentation

•supporting healing processes •reducing inflammation

•softening

A popular antioxidant ingredient in skin care products is vitamin C. According to a 2017 review*, vitamin C is the most abundant antioxidant in human skin. Even with high-dose oral supplements, only a fraction of vitamin C will be biologically available and active in the skin.

Therefore, topical vitamin C products may be a good option. The review notes that the topical application of vitamin C may have anti-aging and anti-pigmentation properties and protect from the effects of the sun. Additionally, vitamin C replenishes vitamin E levels.

Why do we do the Regimen twice a Day? Why do we do the Regimen twice a Day?

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

Skincare works for us optimally when we wash and support our skin in the morning and at night! Your daytime regimen provides nutrients and protects. At night, your regimen provides nutrients and “corrects,” gives your skin nourishment to support rejuvenation while your body’s at rest!

Here’s a deeper dive into why we wash and nourish before going to bed:

There are a few things that can happen to your skin pores…

Accumulation of dirt and oil: Throughout the day, your skin is exposed to various environmental pollutants, dirt, and oil. When you don't wash your face before bedtime, these impurities can build up on the skin's surface and clog your pores. Clogged pores can lead to issues such as acne, blackheads, and whiteheads.

Exacerbation of existing skin conditions: For individuals with conditions like acne or rosacea, not washing the face at night can worsen the symptoms. The accumulation of bacteria and sebum on the skin can further irritate these conditions.

Impaired skin regeneration: During the night, your skin undergoes a process of natural repair and regeneration. If your skin is not clean, this process may be hampered, leading to dull and lackluster skin over time.

Increased risk of infections: Clogged pores can create a breeding ground for bacteria, which may increase the risk of skin infections.

Dehydration: While cleansing the face helps remove impurities, it also allows for better absorption of moisturizers and other skincare products. Neglecting to cleanse before bedtime can hinder the skin's ability to stay adequately hydrated.

It's essential to develop a consistent evening skincare routine, including washing your face to remove makeup, dirt, and excess oil, followed by moisturizing to keep your skin healthy looking and glowing.

Moisturizer

Because moisturizing is so important, there are several from which to choose. Let’s chat about finding the right one for you…

First…many people think they have oily skin who don’t. Often times dry skin will cause extra oil to be secreted, which leads us to believe we have oily skin. Finding the right amount of moisture from our product eliminates that back and forth dry to over-production-of-oil cycle.

Second…each moisturizer has variations of “active” ingredients. Next week we will share ingredients and their benefits for our skin. Assess your needs and check out ingredients to see what’s the best match for you.

Can we brag a little about this?!? It feels so silky smooth! Check out the Peptide Blend combined with antioxidants that help support collagen through moisturization to improve the feel of skin firmness, suppleness and a fortified moisture barrier.

Moisture is one of the best properties to consider in your skin when you want to have healthy aging! During the day, moisturizers provide hydration, antioxidant protection and serve as a base for makeup or other skincare products. At night, they work with your skin's natural renewal process. They often contain ingredients like peptides, retinol, niacinamide, natural oils and other ingredients to provide extra nourishment.

PRO TIP: Do a Patch Test - Some active ingredients in serums and moisturizers can cause irritation or sensitivity for certain individuals. Always perform a patch test on a small area of your skin before applying it all over your face.

SPF

Nailed it!! Mineral SPF is hard to do, but the soft focus veil and Groomwell are the solutions.

Why is the Soft Focus Veil tinted? Many mineral SPFs leave a white “hue” or “cast”that especially shows up in pictures with a flash.

By putting a very light tint into this breathable, sheer SPF Skincare product, they have a perfect 3-in-1 solution to prep, perfect and protect!

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

Why SPF?

The sun causes 90%–95% of the wrinkles, lines, as well as brown, red + white discoloration on our bodies!

What is mineral SPF? The main difference between mineral (or physical) sunscreens and chemical sunscreens is how they handle the sun’s rays. The active ingredients in mineral sunscreens are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which create a barrier on your skin that reflects UV light. They don’t absorb into the skin.

“Mineral sunscreens offer the most protection because they’re literally creating a physical separation between you and the sun,” Dermatologist Anisha Patel, M.D., explains.

PRO TIP: When applying eye cream, use gentle taps to apply it rather than “rubbing it in,” which tugs at the very delicate skin. Use your ring finger for the lightest touch.

Hyaluronic Complex Hyaluronic Complex

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance found in the human body, primarily in the skin, connective tissues, and eyes. It is a glycosaminoglycan, a type of carbohydrate molecule, and it plays a crucial role in maintaining moisture and hydration in various tissues. In skincare, hyaluronic acid is commonly used due to its exceptional ability to retain water, making it an effective moisturizing and hydrating ingredient. Here's how hyaluronic acid benefits the skin:

Intense hydration: One of the main benefits of hyaluronic acid is its capacity to hold and retain water. It can bind to water molecules and hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. When applied topically, hyaluronic acid helps to draw moisture to the skin's surface, providing intense hydration and plumping effect.

Skin moisture retention: Hyaluronic acid helps to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL), which occurs when the skin loses moisture to the environment. By forming a barrier on the skin's surface, hyaluronic acid helps the skin retain moisture, keeping it hydrated and supple.

Improved skin elasticity: The hydration provided by hyaluronic acid contributes to improved skin elasticity. This can result in smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.

Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles: When the skin is adequately hydrated, fine lines and wrinkles may appear less prominent. Hyaluronic acid's plumping effect can help reduce the visibility of fine lines, making the skin appear smoother and more refreshed.

Soothing and calming properties: Hyaluronic acid has soothing properties, making it suitable for individuals with sensitive or irritated skin. It can help alleviate redness and discomfort caused by environmental factors or certain skincare ingredients.

Compatibility with different skin types: Hyaluronic acid is generally well-tolerated by all skin types, including oily, dry, and sensitive skin. It is lightweight and non-greasy, making it suitable for use in various skincare formulations.

Enhances product absorption: When used in combination with other skincare products, hyaluronic acid can improve the absorption of other active ingredients, allowing them to penetrate the skin more effectively.

Peptides Peptides

User uploaded image

In skincare, peptides are short chains of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. Proteins play a crucial role in the structure and function of our skin, and peptides can have various benefits when applied topically. Peptides are often included in skincare products due to their potential to address specific skin concerns and support overall skin health. Here are some of the benefits of peptides in skincare:

Collagen production: Collagen is a protein that provides structural support to the skin, keeping it firm and youthful. Certain peptides can stimulate collagen synthesis, which may help improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Skin firming and lifting: Peptides can have a firming and lifting effect on the skin by promoting the production of proteins like elastin, which is responsible for skin elasticity.

Skin hydration: Some peptides have humectant properties, meaning they can attract and retain moisture in the skin. This helps to keep the skin hydrated and plump.

Reduction of pigmentation: Certain peptides have been found to inhibit the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Using these peptides can help even out skin tone and reduce the appearance of dark spots.

Anti-inflammatory effects: Some peptides have anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe and calm irritated or sensitive skin.

Enhanced skin barrier function: Peptides can help strengthen the skin's natural barrier, which is essential for maintaining moisture levels and protecting the skin from external irritants.

Minimization of wrinkles: Peptides may help reduce the depth and appearance of wrinkles by stimulating collagen and elastin production, which are vital for maintaining skin structure.

Azelaic Acid Azelaic Acid

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

On day 2, we talked about the skin’s Microbiome. Arbonne’s choice to include Azelaic Acid highlights the intentionality of respecting and supporting it. Clean. Conscious, Connected!

Here are some products to consider for this kind of support:

  • Genius Nightly Resurfacing Pads & Solution
  • SuperCalm Skin Relief Serum with Tiger Grass Blend
  • Clarifying Detox Mask with Exfoliating Charcoal
  • Oil Balancing Mask with Red Clay

Azelaic Acid…What makes it extremely special is how it targets hyperactive cells. In skin conditions where there is hyperactivity, azelaic acid comes in and chills things out. Let’s say you’re struggling with your acne and rosacea or hyperpigmentation like melasma - it would be an ingredient to test out to see if it can help you minimize all of this.

A deeper dive: In the acid family tree, azelaic acid is like the third or fourth-degree relative of AHAs and BHAs, so in other words, the term ‘acid’ is the only thing they have in common as azelaic acid is not an exfoliant, but rather a multi-targeted treatment.

Azelaic Acid Benefits

1. It’s an effective acne-buster

Azelaic acid offers both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits and a huge takeaway from research done around it showed that it kills “p. Acnes,” aka the bacteria that causes acne on the skin.

2. It regulates the production of skin cells in acne-prone skin

Azelaic acid is a keratolytic and comedolytic, meaning it clears out any overgrowth of dead skin cells and bacteria that may obstruct your pores and catalyze blackheads.

3. It has skin-brightening effects

Not to be confused with skin-bleaching — azelaic acid only targets areas with hyperactive melanocytes. In these areas, it inhibits tyrosinase to slow down excess melanin production, leaving you with a more even and brightened skin tone. So if you’re struggling with melasma, lentigo maligna, or hyperpigmentation, azelaic acid could be a helpful solution to test on your skin.

Safety measures: Many skincare companies have started using alternative preservatives in their products, such as phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, and natural preservatives, to address the concerns associated with parabens.

Fragrance:

Concern: Fragrances are often used to provide a pleasant scent in skincare products. However, some fragrance ingredients can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in certain individuals, especially those with sensitive skin. Knowing the standards of ingredients used can help you determine if you need to limit products with this ingredient.

SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate):

Concern: These surfactants are used in skincare products to create foam and remove dirt and oil from the skin. However, they can be harsh and drying, leading to irritation, especially for those with sensitive or dry skin.

Preservatives (Shelf life):

Preservatives are crucial in skincare products to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria, mold, and yeast, which could spoil the product or pose health risks to consumers. While some preservatives have been associated with skin sensitization, proper formulation and use of preservatives are necessary to ensure product safety and efficacy throughout its shelf life.

It's essential to consider individual sensitivities and preferences when selecting skincare products. If you have specific concerns or are prone to skin reactions, consulting with a dermatologist or healthcare professional can provide personalized advice on choosing suitable products for your needs.

Great Skin Starts Within

The Gut-Skin connection continues to amaze scientists, nutritionists, and beauty enthusiasts alike. We have an intricate ecosystem residing within us, bustling with billions of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiome. They play a role in our overall well being, including our skin’s health. Our lifestyle and nutrition are key components!

A healthy gut can contribute to better skin:

- Enhanced Nutrient Absorption - You may have heard the saying “you are what you eat,” but a more accurate statement would be you are what you absorb and a healthy gut will improve the absorption of essential nutrients. Nutrients like vitamins A, C, E, and zinc play a crucial role in promoting skin health. They do so by supporting collagen production and protecting the skin from damage caused by environmental factors.

- Balancing Bacteria – Probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria found in the gut can positively influence the gut microbiome and, in turn, improve skin health. Probiotics have been shown to help reduce skin inflammation. Consuming prebiotics with probiotics enhances the effectiveness of the probiotics you consume. The prebiotics serve as fuel for the probiotics, helping them survive and colonize in the gut. This is often referred to as “symbiotics”

Hydration vs. Moisturization

In real estate, it’s location, location, location. For skin health, it’s hydration, moisturization, hydration, moisturization!

A 2007 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science took an in-depth look at the effects of long-term water intake on skin health. The study found that drinking 2.25 liters (9.5 cups) of water every day for four weeks altered skin density and thickness. A second study from the University of Missouri-Columbia showed that drinking 500
milliliters of water (about two cups) increased blood flow to the skin.

The first “level up” addition to consider adding to your regimen is supporting your neck area! Targeted moisturization improves the appearance of the most stubborn signs of aging, including fine lines, drinkles and loss of firmness for the neck, décolletage and jawline.

Pro Tip: Rub in an upward motion on the front and back of neck, as well as on your décolletage and chest.
