RMS Monday Message October 2nd, 2023

Hello, October

It's hard to believe that it is already the first Monday in October. Time is flying by! There is a lot going on at Rombout and in our district as you will see below.

With October comes cooler temps. Be aware that we go outside for recess as much as we can. If your student plays outside for recess or goes outside for PE, please send them into school with weather appropriate clothing and remind them to, the best they can, not leave sweatshirts, jackets, hats, etc., outside at the playground. This is the time of year where our Lost and Found starts to pile up! Our Lost and Found is located in the cafeteria near the snack line. Have your student keep their eyes on those tables for lost items if they are missing anything.

Thanks for continuing to do a great job at arrival at the Kiosk for those that drop off in the morning. Pulling up as far as you can in the loop is much appreciated as it helps to alleviate traffic on Matteawan Road during the busy mornings!

We hope your school year has been going well thus far!

BCSD - All Six School Student Council Coat and Sneaker Drive- October 1-31

Please join all six of our schools as our student councils collaborate to collect coats for Dutchess Outreach’s annual coat drive. Coats should be clean and gently used. We are also collecting sneakers to be recycled or repurposed by gotsneakers.com. There will be drop boxes in all six buildings. At RMS, the Drop boxes will be located at the Kiosk!

Important Health Updates

It's cold, flu, RSV and COVID season again! Here at Rombout, our custodial staff cleans and sanitizes the classrooms, cafeteria, and commonly touched surfaces regularly. If your child is not feeling well, we recommend that they stay home from school. Please do not send your child to school if they have any of the following symptoms: a temperature 100.0 and over (must be fever free for 24 hours before sending back to school), nausea, vomiting, excessive cough, sore throat with a headache, muscle aches or pain.

Current COVID Protocol for Students:

1. When a parent or guardian reports a student having COVID, in order for their absence to be excused, they must provide a note from their parents.

Days 0-5: You must isolate yourself at home and stay away from others that live with you as much as possible and/or wear a well fitting mask if you need to be around those that you live with. For reference, day 0 is considered the day that you test positive or the day that your symptoms started (whichever came first).

Days 6-10: You may return to work/school provided that you have been fever free for at least 24 hours prior to your return without the use of any fever reducing medications (and also, symptoms must be improving).

For all persons testing positive that have a sibling, parent or family member (or someone they otherwise live with) that also reports to the district, there is currently no restriction for family members (or persons who live with) someone who is absent due to COVID. We would strongly suggest that in this case, if the live-in person of someone who tested positive starts to feel ill with COVID symptoms, that they either test themselves or get tested. Keep in mind that this is highly encouraged but is not a requirement.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

An awesome opportunity from Cablevision/Univision!

This Hispanic Heritage month, we are asking students to think about how they stay connected with their communities. Opportunities to connect culturally with others occur each day, whether through media and entertainment, experiences, or relationships with people in your community.

In a 500 word or less essay, choose a person, group of people, or cultural experience (TV show, movie, music, app, event) that has helped you to connect to Hispanic culture and what that means to you.

*Grand Prize: $3,000 scholarship
*Prize for 3 Finalists: iPad
*Separate prizes for middle and high school categories in East and West Regions.

Listen to the announcements for an informational meeting if interested in writing an essay or see one of the World Language teachers.

*Children and household members of Altice USA employees are not eligible to apply

USAgain Bins!

It's that time of year for Fall Cleaning. If you find yourself wanting to donate clothes, shoes and other items, please consider using our USAgain donation bins. The RMS bins are located in the bus loop parking lot. The positives to using these bins are two-fold: for every bin that is full, USAgain plants 1 tree and two, some money gets raised for our RMS Environmental Club! See the picture below from the USAgain website for some ideas that you may consider donating!

RMS PTO Corner

The PTO invites you to become a member this year. Membership is free this year and doesn't require you to volunteer or attend meetings, although we love it if you did. It gets you on our mailing list so you know what we are up to. Follow this link to join.

*Your donations help us fund so many things during the year. Anyone making a monetary donation of any amount to the PTO through November 1st will be entered into a raffle for a gift basket. Make a donation here or venmo @DotDiNobile with RMS PTO in the memo.

*Our Gertrude Hawk Fundraiser will kick off this month. Packets will go home soon. Order forms are due back to school by 10/31. All profits from this fundraiser will be applied to field trips taken this year. Any 7th & 8th grader going on the Boston and Washington DC trips can have the profit earned from their orders applied to their individual trip cost. The profit earned from all other students participating will be given to the district to offset the costs of the grade level trips planned for the end of the year.

*Join us for our next meeting on 10/3 at 6:30 pm in the Library. We really look forward to meeting you! We have open board positions for this year and next year. The PTO needs your help to fill these spots so we can continue supporting the RMS community.
