Weekly Message from Dr. Fish

Dear Flower Valley Community,

This past week provided me with yet another first at FVES...STEM Day! It was such a blast! All of our students were engaged and having fun at the same time. You can't ask for anything better! Students designed paper airplanes and tested them to see how aerodynamic they were, used natural foods to dye fabric, created amazing marble runs, built houses for the three little pigs that the big, bad wolf had to try to blow down, and so much more! On top of that, our 4th grade teachers and students created a real life arcade for all of our kiddos to visit. I was amazed at how the huge pile of boxes in the hall became a workable and fun-filled arcade in our very own gym! Truly AMAZING! A special shout-out to all of our parents who supported this wonderful day of fun and learning!

This upcoming week is another busy week. We have our annual spring PTA sponsored book fair all week, spring pictures on the 26th, and our PTA sponsored STEM Night on the 27th. Let the fun continue!

The 27th is also Take Your Child to Work Day. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience a day in the life of their parents and learn about other professions. If you take your child to work that day, it is an excused absence. Just email Mrs. Sintetos to let her know.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

With Firefly Pride!

STEM Day at FVES: April 20th

STEM Day was a huge success! There were STEM activities happening in all of our classes, from applying engineering and design skills in kindergarten with houses for the three little pigs, to using food to naturally dye material, creating marble obstacle runs, designing paper airplanes, designing quality crates for the tea from the Boston Tea Party, and so much more! A special shout-out to our 4th grade teachers and students for all of the hard work you put into the arcade. It was beyond FABULOUS! Take a look below at some pictures from the day!

Important Reminder about Cell Phones and Smart Watches

This is a reminder that cell phones or smart watches are not allowed at any time during the school day at Flower Valley and in accordance with the MCPS cell phone policy. If a student has a cell phone, it must be turned off and in their backpack during school hours. Details regarding the policy can be accessed here. This information is extremely pertinent at this time, especially because the presence of a cell phone or smart watch could invalidate test scores of students. If a student is found with one of these devices, we will retrieve the device and keep it in the main office until a parent or guardian can pick it up. We appreciate your support in these efforts.

MCAP Testing Update

Students in grades 3 to 5 will take the MCAP assessments in May. The Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) provides information to educators, parents, and the public on student progress towards proficiency on the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards. Students will test on the following days and times. If you can avoid appointments during these times, it would be greatly appreciated.

Want to learn more about the standardized tests in MCPS?

Mr. Bunge and Ms. Pearcy shared information about testing at the last PTA meeting. If you were not able to attend, check out their presentation here.

We will be sending out invitations in the near future for families of students who have been identified to attend summer school. Our cluster's local summer school program will be at Barnsley Elementary School.

Zones of Regulation

At the PTA meeting this month, Mrs. Cheeks shared information about the Zones of Regulation. This is a social-emotional strategy we are using at Flower Valley to help students understand and verbalize how they are feeling and to develop a toolbox of strategies to support how they are feeling and how their emotions impact others. Available Tutoring Opportunities for Students

There are several types of free tutoring services available for MCPS students. FVES has teachers who will be tutoring some of our students as part of the CARES Act services. Students are selected based on their current reading and math data including their levels of proficiency. If your student is identified, we will work to secure a tutor and contact you to coordinate dates and times for tutoring. During these sessions, FVES staff will provide additional support using Benchmark/and or Eureka curriculum, as well as Tier III evidence-based intervention programs.Students not selected for CARES tutoring may sign up for online tutoring services through FEV Tutor or Tutor Me Education.

School Visitors and Volunteers

Anyone visiting FVES must sign in at the main office and bring identification with them. We aren't able to have parents eating with students in the cafeteria due to space, but you can certainly sign your child out for lunch if you would like to enjoy lunch together.

If you are interested in serving as a volunteer, please contact Mrs. Atanda at Jennifer_T_Atanda@mcpsmd.org.
